Contrasting the ecological effects of decreasing ice cover versus accelerated glacial melt on the High Arctic's largest lake.

Lake Hazen, the High Arctic's largest lake, has received an approximately 10-fold increase in glacial meltwater since its catchment glaciers shifted from net mass gain to net mass loss in 2007 common era (CE), concurrent with recent warming. Increased glacial meltwater can alter the ecological functioning of recipient aquatic ecosystems via changes to nutrient budgets, turbidity and thermal regimes. Here, we examine a rare set of five high-resolution sediment cores collected in Lake Hazen between 1990 and 2017 CE to investigate the influence of increased glacial meltwater versus alterations to

Evaluating the retention capacity of a new subtropical run-of-river reservoir.

In man-made reservoirs, the sedimentation and assimilation of elements usually prevail as a result of a decrease in the flow regime and an increase in the hydraulic retention time. Thus, the retention capacity derives from hydraulic flushing, as well as chemical and biological reactions. The aim of this study was to assess the element retention capacity of a new subtropical reservoir (Piraju Reservoir situated in São Paulo State, Brazil). Limnological monitoring was performed over four consecutive years (August 2003 to August 2007). We determined 19 variables (chemical, physical, and biologica

Total and methyl mercury distribution in water, sediment, plankton and fish along the Tapajós River basin in the Brazilian Amazon.

Mercury (Hg) is known as one of the major contaminants in the Amazon. The Tapajós River basin, in the Brazilian Amazon, has diverse anthropogenic activities which increase Hg concentrations in the aquatic ecosystem. Moreover, high concentrations of Hg are naturally found in this basin. Distribution of total (THg) and methyl (MeHg) mercury were assessed in unfiltered water (n = 47), suspended particulate matter (SPM, n = 30), superficial sediment (BS, n = 29), plankton (n = 28) and fishes (n = 129) from the Tapajós River basin. Suspended particles were the main carrier of Hg in the water column

Effects of small hydropower plants on mercury concentrations in fish.

Although the impacts of large dams on freshwater biota are relatively well known, the effects of small hydropower plants (SHP) are not well investigated. In this work, we studied if mercury (Hg) concentrations in fish rise in two tropical SHP reservoirs, and whether similar effects take place during impoundment. Total Hg concentrations in several fish species were determined at two SHP in the Upper Guaporé River basin floodplain, Brazil. In total, 185 specimens were analysed for Hg content in dorsal muscle and none of them reported levels above the safety limit (500 μg kg-1) for fish consumpti

Forensic diatomology of Pong dam reservoir: Implications for drowning diagnosis and site identification.

Determining antemortem drowning in medico-legal casework remains a persistent forensic challenge, particularly in bodies exhibiting advanced putrefactive changes, where conventional morphological indicators are no longer discernible. Forensic diatomology provides a critical microtrace-evidence framework for substantiating drowning and enabling immersion-site attribution through ecological fingerprinting of diatom assemblages. Despite the frequent retrieval of suspected drowning victims from the Pong Dam reservoir hydrologically influenced by the Beas river no comprehensive spatiotemporal diato

Multi-biomarker assessment of essential and toxic elements accumulation in Labeo gonius from Khushab Lake (Pakistan).

The continuous increase in the concentration of heavy metals in bodies of water due to human activity poses a serious threat to the sustainability and overall health of the ecosystem. This study investigated the essential and toxic elements bioaccumulation in various tissues (gills, muscles, liver, and brain) of the Minor carp (Labeo gonius) from two sampling sites of highly polluted Khushab Lake, a tributary of River Jhelum (in the Pakistan's Punjab province), along with a less exposed reference site (Chashma Lake-less polluted site). The impacts of pollution on the health profile of the fish

Broad habitat range of the phylogenetically narrow R-BT065 cluster, representing a core group of the Betaproteobacterial genus Limnohabitans.

The distribution of the phylogenetically narrow R-BT065 cluster (Betaproteobacteria) in 102 freshwater lakes, reservoirs, and various ponds located in central Europe (a total of 122 samples) was examined by using a cluster-specific fluorescence in situ hybridization probe. These habitats differ markedly in pH, conductivity, trophic status, surface area, altitude, bedrock type, and other limnological characteristics. Despite the broad ecological diversity of the habitats investigated, the cluster was detected in 96.7% of the systems, and its occurrence was not restricted to a certain habitat ty

Addressing field data scarcity in algal bloom surveillance: integrating fuzzy inference and orbital remote sensing in Brazilian reservoirs.

Chronic scarcity of continuous in situ sampling severely hampers trophic monitoring in tropical reservoirs, restricting the application of data-intensive models in regulatory environments. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a cross-validation framework integrating a Mamdani Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) with Sentinel-2 Normalized Difference Chlorophyll Index (NDCI) retrievals via Google Earth Engine (GEE) to overcome these limitations. The methods involved parameterizing the FIS with subtropical thresholds using a 16-year limnological dataset from the Billings Reservoir (Brazil). T

Micro-scale investigation of intestinal schistosomiasis transmission on Ngamba and Kimi islands, Lake Victoria, Uganda.

A study to investigate the effect of environmental predictors on abundance of Biomphalaria, the intermediate host snails of Schistosoma mansoni, was carried out on two small islands in Lake Victoria, Uganda. Malacological surveys were performed at 40 shoreline sites on Kimi and Ngamba islands documenting occurrence of Biomphalaria; other environmental and limnological conditions were also recorded, including gastropod community diversity. Snails were examined for shedding of schistosomes and emerging cercariae were DNA 'barcoded'. For population genetics analysis of Biomphalaria, snails from f

Ex situ treatment of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in groundwater using a fluidized bed reactor.

N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a suspected human carcinogen that has traditionally been treated in water using ultraviolet irradiation (UV). The objective of this research was to examine the application of a laboratory-scale fluidized bed reactor (FBR) as an alternative technology for treating NDMA to part-per-trillion (ng/L) concentrations in groundwater. Previous studies have shown that the bacterium Rhodococcus ruber ENV425 is capable of cometabolizing NDMA during growth on propane as a primary substrate in batch culture (Fournier et al., 2009) and in a bench-scale membrane bioreactor (Ha

Time dependent ultrastructural alterations on the skin, eye, barbel and fins of the spawn of Clarias batrachus (Linn. 1758) exposed to UV-B radiation.

Present study highlighted the ultramicroscopic (SEM) alterations of the skin, eye, barbel, and fins of spawn of an air-breathing teleost (Clarias batrachus, Linn. 1758) induced by UV-B radiation (280-320 nm) at a dose (@4.07 × 10-20J/photon/m2) under the time-frame of 5, 10 and 15 min/d in the laboratory condition for the periods of 5 and 10 days. Limnological parameters revealed no significant changes throughout the period of experimentation which were measured by PCS Testr 35 Multi-Parameter. Morphometric analysis revealed that during the extended exposure period of 10 days the spawn size an

40-years of Lake Urmia restoration research: Review, synthesis and next steps.

Public concern over environmental issues such as ecosystem degradation is high. However, restoring coupled human-natural systems requires integration across many science, technology, engineering, management, and governance topics that are presently fragmented. Here, we synthesized 544 peer-reviewed articles published through September 2020 on the desiccation and nascent recovery of Lake Urmia in northwest Iran. We answered nine questions of scientific and popular interest about causes, impacts, stabilization, recovery, and next steps. We find: (1) Expansion of irrigated agriculture, dam constr

Rainstorm regimes modulate cyanobacterial bloom dynamics in deep reservoirs: Synergistic effects of nutrient pulses and hydrological perturbations.

Global expansion of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms, driven by anthropogenic nutrient loading and climate change, poses escalating threats to water security. While altered precipitation regimes are recognized as critical climate multipliers, their hierarchical controls on cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom dynamics remain poorly quantified, particularly in stratified reservoirs. Here, we integrate a 60-yr (1961-2020) trend analysis of rainfall extremes with 4 yr (2017-2020) of high-frequency monitoring of hydrology, nutrients, and phytoplankton through manual sampling and autonomous buoys

Model predicts coastal paralytic shellfish toxicity in mussels from in situ phytoplankton concentrations.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) of Alexandrium catenella occur annually in the Gulf of Maine, leading to accumulation of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) in bivalve mollusks and closure of harvesting areas. State monitoring programs in the region rely on weekly shellfish sampling and toxin analysis, requiring extensive effort with limited temporal resolution. With the development of autonomous in situ detection devices such as the Environmental Sample Processor (ESP), this study aimed to model shellfish toxicity using ESP-derived A. catenella counts to complement traditional monitoring programs u

Distinct gelatinous zooplankton communities across a dynamic shelf sea.

Understanding how gelatinous zooplankton communities are structured by local hydrography and physical forcing has important implications for fisheries and higher trophic predators. Although a large body of research has described how fronts, hydrographic boundaries, and different water masses (e.g., mixed vs. stratified) influence phytoplankton and zooplankton communities, comparatively few studies have investigated their influence on gelatinous zooplankton communities. In July 2015, 49 plankton samples were collected from 50 m depth to the surface, across five transects in the Celtic Sea, of w

Summertime methane and carbon dioxide emission rates and associated variables from a national-scale survey of 146 reservoirs in the United States.

Reservoirs are globally important sources of greenhouse gases, but the magnitude of their emissions is highly uncertain. Here, we present data for 146 reservoirs from two surveys of reservoir methane and carbon dioxide emissions, one at the regional scale in the midwestern United States and one at the national scale in the United States, plus data from two hand-picked sites in Washington and Puerto Rico. At all reservoirs, ebullitive and diffusive emissions and basic physicochemistry were measured at 15-55 locations during one 22 to 64-h period during the summers of 2016-2023, with four reserv
