The effect of injury on the properties of afferent fibres in the lingual nerve.

The receptor properties of mechanosensitive afferent fibres in the lingual nerve have been studied using electrophysiological techniques in cats. In normal animals some fibres responded only to mechanical stimulation of filiform or fungiform papillae but others also responded when a cold stimulus was applied to the receptive field. Twelve weeks after crushing the lingual nerve, the regenerated fibres had slower conduction velocities but the receptor properties were not significantly different from normal. Twelve weeks after sectioning the lingual nerve, there was a greater reduction in conduct

P2X(3) expression is not altered by lingual nerve injury.

We have investigated a possible role for the ATP receptor subunit P2X(3), in the development of neuropathic pain following injury to a peripheral branch of the trigeminal nerve. In nine anaesthetised adult ferrets the left lingual nerve was sectioned and recovery permitted for 3 days, 3 weeks or 3 months (3 ferrets per group). A retrograde tracer, fluorogold, was applied to the nerve to allow identification of cell bodies in the trigeminal ganglion with axons in the injured nerve. Indirect immunofluorescence for P2X(3) and image analysis was used to quantify the percentage area of staining at

Management of inferior alveolar nerve and lingual nerve injuries in the UK - a cross-sectional study.

Post operative nerve injury following mandibular third molar (M3M) potentially impacts a significant number of patients. A lack of consensus for the management of trigeminal nerve injuries exists. It is important to know how clinicians manage these injuries, and how confidently. A 16-question online survey using SurveyMonkey was developed and sent to all current UK members of three oral srelated societies (ABAOMS, BAOS and BAOMS) from January 2021 to March 2021. The survey consisted of open free text, binomial and variable scale responses related to the management of inferior alveolar nerve an

Association between MR neurography-based objective quantitative parameters in inferior alveolar nerve and lingual nerve injuries.

OBJECTIVES: The diagnosis of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) and lingual nerve (LN) injuries currently relies on imaging and clinical examinations. Magnetic resonance neurography (MRN) demonstrates limited sensitivity in mild-to-moderate IAN and LN injuries, while quantifiable parameters correlating with symptomatology and prognostic outcomes remain undefined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study retrospectively reviewed 24 patients with IAN or LN injuries. Their clinical and imaging data were collected. MRN-based parameters, including apparent signal-to-noise ratio (aSNR) and apparent nerve-muscl

The effect of unilateral lingual nerve injury on the kinematics of mastication in pigs.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the effect of unilateral lingual sensory loss on the spatial and temporal dynamics of jaw movements during pig chewing. DESIGN: X-ray Reconstruction of Moving Morphology (XROMM) was used to reconstruct the 3-dimensional jaw movements of 6 pigs during chewing before and after complete unilateral lingual nerve transection. The effect of the transection were evaluated at the temporal and spatial level using Multiple Analysis of Variance. Temporal variables include gape cycle and phase durations, and the corresponding relative phase durations. Spatial variables inc

Motor cortex neuroplasticity associated with lingual nerve injury in rats.

The aim of this study was to determine if lingual nerve trauma affects the features of face primary motor cortex (MI) defined by intracortical microstimulation (ICMS). The left lingual nerve was transected in adult male rats by an oral surgical procedure; sham rats (oral surgery but no nerve transection) as well as naive intact rats served as control groups. ICMS was applied at post-operative days 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28 to map the jaw and tongue motor representations in face MI by analyzing ICMS-evoked movements and electromyographic activity recorded in the genioglossus (GG) and anterior digast

Simplifying the assessment of the recovery from surgical injury to the lingual nerve.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the sensitivity of conventional sensory assessment in monitoring lingual nerve recovery subsequent to third molar surgery and to evaluate if the assessment methods can be predictive of injury outcome. METHOD: A prospective case series of 94 patients presenting with lingual nerve injuries evaluated using objective mechanosensory and subjective methods during the recovery period of up to 12 months. RESULTS: The conventional tests were often unable to diagnose the presence of injury due to variability and they were not predictive of outcome. As a result of this study, we

The effect of carbamazepine on injury-induced ectopic discharge in the lingual nerve.

Previous studies have shown that the development of ectopic activity from damaged axons following nerve injury may contribute to the aetiology of sensory disturbances, including dysaesthesia. Pharmacological manipulation of this activity could provide a method of treatment for this intractable condition. In this study we have investigated the effect of carbamazepine, an anti-convulsant, as it is known to have membrane stabilising properties. In eight anaesthetised adult ferrets the left lingual nerve was sectioned and the animals allowed to recover for 3 days. Then, in terminal experiments und

[Lingual nerve injury during extraction of lower wisdom teeth].

A lingual nerve injury is an infrequent but unpleasant complication of the removal of lower third molars. The nerve stays at risk even with a correct technique. The classifications of nerve injuries of Seddon and Sunderland give insight in the complexity and give guidelines for prognosis and treatment. Degeneration and regeneration as in other peripheral nerves occur also here and knowledge of these phenomena is crucial for the success of the microsurgical repair. Confronted with the problem, an attempt to a correct evaluation of the extent of the injury should be done, and transfer to a speci

Trials needed to identify best management of iatrogenic inferior alveolar and lingual nerve injuries.

DATA SOURCES: The Cochrane Oral Health Group's Trials Register, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Medline and Embase databases were searched with no language or date restrictions. STUDY SELECTION: Three reviewers independently selected studies. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) involving interventions to treat patients with neurosensory defect of the inferior alveolar or lingual nerve or both as a sequela of iatrogenic injury were considered. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: Standard Cochrane methodological procedures were followed. RESULTS: Two studies considered at

Risk Factors for Lingual Nerve Injury Associated With Suspension Laryngoscopy.

PURPOSE: This prospective study was designed to identify risk factors for lingual nerve injury as a complication of suspension laryngoscopy. METHODS: Fifty-six adult patients (19 females and 37 males) who underwent microlaryngeal surgery (MLS) using the suspension laryngoscopy procedure under general anesthesia at our otorhinolaryngology department between January 2016 and January 2018 were enrolled in this study. All operations were performed using only a cold-steel microlaryngeal surgical set, and operations using laser and radiofrequency energy were not included. Unilateral or bilateral pa

Lingual nerve injury following use of a supraglottic airway device.

We present the case of a 64-year-old woman who lost sensation on the left side of her tongue after an orthopaedic procedure under general anaesthetic. It provides evidence that anaesthetic airway devices can injure the lingual nerve.

Lingual nerve injury after use of a cuffed oropharyngeal airway.

The cuffed oropharyngeal airway is a modified Guedel airway and is recommended for anaesthesia in spontaneously breathing patients. To our knowledge this is the first report of transient unilateral lingual nerve palsy after the use of a cuffed oropharyngeal airway to maintain anaesthesia during arthroscopy of an ankle. The aetiology of lingual nerve damage is multifactorial. The possible mechanisms involved include anterior displacement of the mandible during insertion of the cuffed oropharyngeal airway (as in the jaw thrust manoeuvre), compression of the nerve against the mandible, or stretch
