OBJECTIVES: To discuss treatment options and surgical management of lingual thyroid carcinoma with cervical metastasis.
STUDY DESIGN: Lingual thyroid is relatively uncommon, and carcinoma of the lingual thyroid is extremely rare, with only 40 cases reported. We report a new case of a young female who presented with a cervical neck mass found to represent metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma. Further workup revealed the patient's only thyroid tissue was located at the tongue base and was the site of the primary tumor. Management of lingual thyroid carcinoma and review of the literature is di

Lingual thyroid is an uncommon cause of oropharyngeal mass, due to a congenital anomaly of thyroidal development and migration: It is defined precisely as the presence of thyroid tissue in the midline of the tongue base between circumvallatae papillae and the epiglottis. We report a case of lingual thyroid in which the integration of clinical data, sonography, color-duplex Doppler, MRI and scintigraphy was determinant in demonstrating the disease. A 22-year-old woman presented with a sensation of foreign body in the throat, dysphonia, dyspnoea and dysphagia; we performed sonography (7.5 MHz li

We present a unique and medically complex case of improved voice after lingual thyroidectomy. A 10-year-old boy with multifactorial dysphonia presented with bilateral vocal fold lesions and sulci in the context of hypothyroidism as a result of a congenital lingual thyroid gland. Despite hormone replacement, medical treatment for asthma, allergy, cough, and possible reflux, as well as voice therapy, the dysphonia persisted. Significant improvement in both subjective and objective voice measures was achieved after surgical removal of the lingual thyroid gland, which allowed for maintenance of a

SUMMARY: Lingual thyroid (LT) gland is the most common type of ectopic thyroid tissue, but it is an extremely rare presentation. We present a case of a 41-year-old Hispanic female patient complaining of dysphonia and dysphagia. As part of the evaluation, fiber optic flexible indirect laryngoscopy (FIL) was performed which revealed a mass at the base of the tongue. The morphological examination was highly suspicious for ectopic thyroid tissue and the diagnosis was confirmed with neck ultrasound and thyroid scintigraphy. Although the patient presented subclinical hypothyroidism, levothyroxine th

The ways of origin and the methods of diagnosing of the ectopic thyroid gland have been described. The authors have shown the case of follicular carcinoma of ectopic lingual thyroid gland in 35 years woman. The effective surgery (labiomandibuloglossotomy and total extirpation of the tumor) and following irradiation therapy with 131I haven't revealed recurrence of the disease during 2.5 years observation. The permanent substitution therapy with thyroxine has secured the euthyreotic state for the patient.

3 patients with lingual thyroid are reported. In addition, 5 patients are described with hypothyroidism in whom functioning thyroid tissue was only present at the base of the tongue without any noticeable swelling. In a postmortem study of 120 tongues, not a single case of lingual thyroid was encountered. The preponderance of females among cases of congenital hypothyroidism and/or lingual thyroid is discussed.

Ectopic thyroid gland may be detected at any place between foramen caecaum and normal thyroid localization due to inadequacy of the embryological migration of the thyroid gland. It has a prevalence varying between 1/10.000 and 1/100000 in the community. Usually follow-up without treatment is preferred except for obstructive symptoms, bleeding, and suspicion of malignity. Main symptoms are dysphagia, dysphonia, bleeding, dyspnea, and obstructive sleep apnea. In symptomatic cases, the first described method in surgical treatment is open approach since it is a region difficult to have access to.

Lingual thyroid is a rare developmental anomaly. It is the result of failure of the thyroid to descend from the foramen caecum to its prelaryngeal site. Lithium is a known goitrogen, but has never been reported to cause symptomatic enlargement of the lingual thyroid. We describe a 40-year-old woman, who presented with a foreign body sensation and progressive dysphagia caused by an ectopic lingual thyroid tissue measuring 4 cm x 3 cm x 3.5 cm. She had been taking lithium for treatment of bipolar disorder and had hypothyroidism. Her symptoms were relieved after excision of the ectopic thyroid ti

BACKGROUND: Lingual thyroid is a developmental anomaly caused by failure of migration of the thyroid gland to its normal position in the neck. This anomaly is usually manifested in childhood as hypothyroidism or local symptoms.
METHODS: We present a case of a 32-year-old patient in whom lingual thyroid was diagnosed after complaints of a chronic cough. Thyroid-stimulating hormone levels were significantly elevated. Sonograms of the neck revealed atrophy of both thyroid lobes, with nonhomogeneous consistency and no lymphadenopathy. Technetium-99m scan revealed uptake at the tongue base, with n

Ectopic lingual thyroid is a rare developmental abnormality caused by aberrant embryogenesis during thyroid migration. Even though, most patients are asymptomatic, uncommonly the mass can be enlarged and cause dysphagia, dyspnea, upper airway obstruction, dysphonia, hypothyroidism. We report a very rare case of ectopic lingual thyroid presenting with massive hematemesis.

A 42-year-old Caucasian woman presented with a sensation of fullness in the throat and dry cough of 1-month duration. Physical examination showed a mass located in the midline of the tongue base. Cervical ultrasound confirmed the absence of thyroid gland tissue in the normal position. MRI of the neck showed a mass suggestive of lingual thyroid and scintigraphy confirmed the diagnosis. Thyroid function was normal. Despite normal thyroid function, to decrease the size of the mass and perhaps solve the problem, we decided to start levothyroxine suppression therapy. The patient had palpitations an

OBJECTIVE: We report an extremely rare case of thyroid hemiagenesis with ectopic lingual thyroid.
METHOD: Case report and review of the world literature concerning thyroid hemiagenesis with ectopic lingual thyroid and heredity.
RESULTS: Ectopic thyroid is an uncommon embryological aberration characterised by the presence of thyroid tissue in a site other than its usual, pretracheal location. The lingual thyroid is the most common manifestation of benign ectopic thyroid tissue, but is still a rare clinical entity. Thyroid hemiagenesis is also a very rare abnormality, in which one thyroid lobe

A 22 year-old female came to our clinic complaining of a swallowing disturbance and dyspnea. ENT examination revealed a spherical mass at the base of the tongue partially obstructing the airway. Scintigraphy with an iodine isotope confirmed that the mass was an ectopic thyroid. Under general anesthesia, and the mass was carefully dissected together with its the feeding vessels and transplanted into the right submandibular gland was removed the space that had been created. The postoperative course was uneventful. Thyroid function one month after surgery was at the same level as before surgery,

Lingual thyroid is a rare lesion caused by maldescent of the thyroid gland. It is an important cause of a mass on the posterior third of the tongue, and may coexist with other developmental abnormalities such as thyroglossal cyst. The diagnosis is made by radioisotope scan. Treatment is indicated in the presence of symptoms and consists initially of thyroxine. Severe or unresponsive cases require complete excision through a lateral pharyngotomy. Hypothyroidism is common postoperatively, but may be avoided in some cases by transplantation of excised tissue. We present a case report and review o

A 38-year-old farmer was apparently well until 5 years of age. At this age, the patient's mother found mildly itchy, raised eruptions over the scalp during combing of the scalp hair. Since then, the eruptions have progressed insidiously to involve the face and other parts of the body, with a preponderance over the face, upper back, and chest, including the palms. The soles, oral cavity, and genital tract were unaffected. The lesions were persistent in nature and showed no remission or exacerbation. Mild to moderate pruritus/discomfort was experienced following sunlight exposure. A prominent, r

OBJECTIVES: Lingual thyroid is a rare condition that affects approximately 1 in 100,000 individuals. Although it is usually detected in the pediatric population through newborn screening tests or evaluation of congenital hypothyroidism, there are cases in which it remains undetected until adulthood or until symptoms arise because of glandular enlargement. The possible symptoms of lingual thyroid include foreign body sensation in the throat, dysphagia, dyspnea, and hemorrhage. Several cases of lingual thyroid are asymptomatic and accompanied by subclinical hypothyroidism. Herein, we present thr

INTRODUCTION: Ectopic thyroid tissue presenting at the base of the tongue, called lingual thyroid, is a clinical rarity. Clinical presentation varies depending upon either the severity of regional symptoms associated with the enlargement of gland size, or the features related to thyroid dysfunction.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We reported a case of a 29-year-old female who presented with symptoms of easy fatigue and depression for 3 months.
DIAGNOSIS: After a series of diagnostic workup, the lingual thyroid with severe hypothyroidism was diagnosed.
INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: She received conservative
