Multiple oral mucoceles treated with gamma-linolenic acid: report of a case.

Multiple mucoceles are an extremely rare condition in the oral cavity. We report a case which responded entirely to systemic gamma-linolenic acid but which recurred several months following discontinuation of therapy. Spontaneous resolution of the condition seems unlikely and it would appear that gamma-linolenic acid could have an effect on minor salivary gland composition and/or viscosity and may be worth prescribing on a trial basis prior to surgical treatment of this rare condition.

Effects of dietary linolenate on the fatty acid composition of brain lipids in rats.

Weanling male rats were fed hydrogenated coconut oil to induce essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency. After 15 weeks, the rats were divided into six groups. Five groups were fed graded amounts of purified linolenate (18:3 omega 3) with a constant amount of linoleate (18:2 omega 6) for six weeks. Fatty acid composition was determined in brain lipids. Increasing dietary 18:3 omega 3 resulted in a decrease in arachidonic acid (20:4 omega 6), docosatetraenoic acid (22:4 omega 6) and docosapentaenoic acid (22:5 omega 6), whereas 18:2 omega 6 and eicosatrienoic acid (20:3 omega 6) were increased bot

The Role of Alpha-Linolenic Acid and Other Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Mental Health: A Narrative Review.

The present review investigates the relationship between polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and mental health disorders, such as dementia, psychosis, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, anorexia nervosa, and impairment problems in animals and human models. Data were collected from a variety of studies: randomized intervention trials, observational and interventional studies, case reports, and epidemiological studies. The evidence suggests that PUFAs are beneficial for mental health, brain function, and behavior. ALA, EPA, and DHA have very significant neuroprotective properties, particularly

α-Linolenic Acid-Valproic Acid Conjugates: Toward Single-Molecule Polypharmacology for Multiple Sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex inflammatory, degenerative, and demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Although treatments exist, MS cannot be cured by available drugs, which primarily target neuroinflammation. Thus, it is feasible that a well concerted polypharmacological approach able to act at multiple points within the intricate network of inflammation, neurodegeneration, and demyelination/remyelination pathways would succeed where other drugs have failed. Starting from reported beneficial effects of α-linolenic acid (ALA) and valproic acid (VPA) in MS, and by applying a

The Linoleic Acid: Dihomo-γ-Linolenic Acid Ratio (LA:DGLA)-An Emerging Biomarker of Zn Status.

Zinc (Zn) deficiency is a common aliment predicted to affect 17% of the world's population. Zinc is a vital micronutrient used for over 300 enzymatic reactions and multiple biochemical and structural processes in the body. Although whole blood, plasma, and urine zinc decrease in severe zinc deficiency, accurate assessment of zinc status, especially in mild to moderate deficiency, is difficult as studies with these biomarkers are often contradictory and inconsistent. Hence, as suggested by the World Health Organization, sensitive and specific biological markers of zinc status are still needed.

Effect of dietary alpha-linolenic, eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids on liver microsomal mixed-function oxidases in rats.

This study was undertaken to compare the effects of three major dietary n-3 fatty acids, i.e. alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3, n-3; LN), eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5, n-3; EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6, n-3; DHA), on liver microsomal mixed-function oxidase activities with and without phenobarbital (PB) induction. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a 5% lipid diet containing either LN, EPA or DHA as major constituent fatty acid (about 40%) of dietary lipids for 15 days. The fatty acid compositions of liver microsomal lipids of each n-3 fatty acid group were characteristically different, parti

Study on the thermal oxidation of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids by synchrotron radiation photoionization mass spectrometry.

RATIONALE: Cooking oil fumes contain numerous hazardous and carcinogenic chemicals, posing potential threats to human health. However, the sources of these species remain ambiguous, impeding health risk assessment, pollution control and mechanism research. METHODS: To address this issue, the thermal oxidation of three common unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs), namely oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids, present in vegetable oils was investigated. The volatile and semi-volatile products were comprehensively characterized by online synchrotron radiation photoionization mass spectrometry (SR-PIMS) w

In vivo and in vitro effects of gamma-linolenic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid on prostaglandin production and arachidonic acid uptake by human endometrium.

This study examines the effect of a 6 month dietary supplement of either gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) on the synthesis of prostaglandins E2 and F2 alpha by the endometrium of women with regular menstrual cycles. Samples of endometrium, obtained pre- and post-treatment, were incubated in vitro for 2 h and the prostaglandins E2 and F2 alpha released into the medium measured by radioimmunoassay. The ability of the tissue to take up 14C-arachidonic acid before and after treatment was also examined. Both GLA and EPA caused a marked decrease in the synthesis of prostagla

The ratio of dihomo-γ-linolenic acid to deoxycholic acid species is a potential biomarker for the metabolic abnormalities in obesity.

Bile acid (BA) signaling regulates fatty acid metabolism. BA dysregulation plays an important role in the development of metabolic disease. However, BAs in relation to fatty acids have not been fully investigated in obesity-related metabolic disorders. A targeted metabolomic measurement of serum BA and free fatty acid profiles was applied to sera of 381 individuals in 2 independent studies. The results showed that the ratio of dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA) to deoxycholic acid (DCA) species (DCAS) was significantly increased in obese individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) from a case-control

Fatty acid modification of cultured neuroblastoma cells by gamma linolenic acid relevant to its antitumor effect.

Two human neuroblastoma cell lines, NCG and GOTO, were used to study the cytotoxic effect of gamma linolenic acid (GLA). The cell growth inhibition of these culture cells by GLA was found to be associated with striking membrane fatty acid modification. When culture cells were exposed to 20 micrograms/ml and 60 micrograms/ml GLA for 48 hr, polyenoic acids in cell membrane phospholipids (PC, PE, PI, PS) and triglyceride significantly increased; 1.8-21.0 fold for NCG and 1.04-11.5 fold for GOTO, in association with decreased monoenoic acids. The most remarkable changes were; increase of C18:3, C2

Linolenic Acid-Metronidazole: a Compound Relieving Drug Resistance and Inhibiting Helicobacter pylori.

Metronidazole (Met) is the first choice for treating Helicobacter pylori (Hp). However, Hp is easy to resistant, making Met unable to be widely used. How to overcome Hp's Met resistance is still an issue. In this study, Met was used as the primary raw material with linolenic acid to prepare a novel compound-linolenic acid-metronidazole (Lla-Met). The MIC, minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), colonization amount of Hp in gastric mucosa, etc., were evaluated, respectively. Lla-Met was successfully prepared by the detection of nuclear magnetic resonance, etc., and its MIC and MBC to Hp were

α- Linolenic acid modulates phagocytosis and endosomal pathways of extracellular Tau in microglia.

Microglia, the resident immune cells, were found to be activated to inflammatory phenotype in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The extracellular burden of amyloid-β plaques and Tau seed fabricate the activation of microglia. The seeding effect of extracellular Tau species is an emerging aspect to study about Tauopathies in AD. Tau seeds enhance the propagation of disease along with its contribution to microglia-mediated inflammation. The excessive neuroinflammation cumulatively hampers phagocytic function of microglia reducing the clearance of extracellular protein aggregates. Omega-3 fatty acids, es

Effect of α-linolenic acid on streptozotocin-induced diabetic retinopathy indices in vivo.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Both oxidative stress and inflammation play a significant role in the pathobiology of diabetic retinopathy. Increased consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) may prevent or postpone the occurrence of diabetic retinopathy. Hence, the effect of α-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential fatty acid, on oxidative stress, inflammatory indices and production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in streptozotocin-induced diabetic retinopathy indices in vivo was studied. METHODS: Serum and retina concentrations of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), brain-deri

Alpha-linolenic acid is a potent neuroprotective agent against soman-induced neuropathology.

Nerve agents are deadly threats to military and civilian populations around the world. Nerve agents cause toxicity to peripheral and central sites through the irreversible inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that metabolizes acetylcholine. Excessive acetylcholine accumulation in synapses results in status epilepticus in the central nervous system. Prolonged status epilepticus leads to brain damage, neurological dysfunction and poor outcome. Anticonvulsants are effective but must be given rapidly following exposure. Because these agents cause mass casualties, effective neuroprotectiv

Inhibition of methyl mercury chloride-induced chromosomal damage by gamma-linolenic acid.

The genotoxic potential of methyl mercury chloride (MMC) was investigated in human lymphocyte cultures by tests for chromosomal aberrations and sister chromatid exchange. The protective role of gamma-linolenic acid, a derivative of dietary essential fatty acid, on MMC-induced genetic damage was evident from the reduced frequency of aberrations and sister chromatid exchanges.

Antibacterial Activity of a Linolenic Acid Stigmasterol Ester Produced by Lipase-Mediated Transesterification.

Phytosterols are naturally found in lipid-rich plant foods and oils. These compounds exhibit various pharmacological effects, including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and cholesterol-lowering properties. However, their industrial application has been limited due to their high melting points and poor solubility in both water and oil. Some unsaturated fatty acids can enhance phytosterols' oil solubility while exhibiting antimicrobial activities against various bacterial strains. In this study, we synthesized a linolenic acid stigmasterol ester (LASE) to improve oil and emulsion s

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Higher dietary intake of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-derived omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), was associated with a lower risk of multiple sclerosis (MS) in a prospective cohort study and lower risk of new lesions, relapses, and disability progression in a patient cohort. We examined whether serum levels of ALA and other PUFAs predicted MS outcomes up to 11 years after clinical onset. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted among participants in the BENEFIT clinical trial, who had serum samples collected starting at randomization. Serum fatty

Effects of Nano-α-Linolenic Acid and miR-146 on Mice with Viral Myocarditis.

Micro RNA-146 (miR-146) is involved in mediating many innate and adaptive immune and inflammatory responses in the body. It is associated with a variety of systemic inflammation or autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and type 2 diabetes. In recent years, microRNAs (miRNAs) and nanotechnology have become research hotspots in cardiovascular pathology. The close relationship between host miRNAs and coxsackie virus B3 has gradually been discovered by scientists, which may provide new directions for the treatment and prevention of viral myocarditis.
