New insights into the ageing of linseed oil paint binder: a qualitative and quantitative analytical study.

This paper presents an analytical investigation of paint reconstructions prepared with linseed oil that have undergone typical 19th century treatments in preparation for painting. The oil was mechanically extracted from the same seed lot, which was then processed by various methods: water washing, heat treatments, and the addition of driers, with and without heat. A modern process lead white (Dutch source, Schoonhoven) and a commercially available vine black were used as pigments. The reconstructions were prepared in 1999, and naturally aged from then onwards. We compared thermogravimetric ana

Sustainable non-ionic surfactants from epoxidised linseed oil: synthesis, interfacial properties, foaming behaviour, and emulsification performance.

The development of sustainable surfactants from renewable resources is essential for reducing dependence on petroleum-derived chemicals. Herein, a series of bio-based non-ionic surfactants was synthesised from epoxidised linseed oil (ELO) through heterogeneous catalyst-assisted epoxide ring-opening with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and monomethyl poly(ethylene glycol) (MePEG) of varying molecular weights. Five surfactants, designated ELO400, ELO400M, ELO750M, ELO1050 and ELO1500, were successfully prepared and characterised by FT-IR, NMR and size exclusion chromatography, confirming efficient P

Effect of Strategic Supplementation of Dietary By-Pass Linseed Oil on Fertility and Milk Quality in Sarda Ewes.

The aim of the present study was to assess whether the strategic supplementation of bypass LO can enhance reproductive indexes—fertility, lambing rate, and prolificacy—in dairy Sarda ewes at the end of lactation. To assess whether LO supplementation leads to the adsorptions of PUFAs and their subsequent utilization by the body tissues, milk composition and fatty acid content were analyzed. Forty-eight ewes were assigned to the following groups: the control group (CT; N = 24), fed with a control diet without LO; and the treatment group (LO; N = 24), fed with a diet supplemented with LO (10.8 g/

Dietary linseed oil affects the polyunsaturated fatty acid and transcriptome profiles in the livers and breast muscles of ducks.

Linseed oil, an important source of dietary α-linolenic acid, is used to provide meat enriched in n-3 PUFA. We investigated the effects of dietary linseed oil (0, 0.5, 1, and 2%) on growth performance, meat quality, tissue fatty acid (FA), and transcriptome profiles in ducks. The result showed that dietary linseed oil had no effect on growth performance. Increasing dietary linseed oil enrichment raised n-3 PUFA and linoleic acid (LA) levels in both the liver and breast muscle, but decreased dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) levels in the liver. The liver n-3 PUFA co

Evaluation of Heartwood Extracts Combined with Linseed Oil as Wood Preservatives in Field Tests in Southern Mississippi, USA.

Heartwood extracts of naturally durable wood species are often evaluated as alternatives to chemical wood preservatives, but field data from long-term performance testing are lacking. The current study evaluated the long-term (five-year) performance of two non-durable wood species treated with heartwood extracts of either Tectona grandis, Dalbergia sissoo, Cedrus deodara, or Pinus roxburghii alone or combined with linseed oil. Stakes (45.7 × 1.9 × 1.9 cm) and blocks (12.5 × 3.75 × 2.5 cm) cut from the sapwood of cottonwood and southern pine were vacuum-pressure impregnated with the individual

Adsorption removal of cyclolinopeptide E from linseed oil using sodium chloride-induced walnut shell biochar: Kinetic and mechanism.

To produce linseed oil with mild bitterness, walnut shell biochar (WBSC) was synthesized via NaCl immersion, anaerobic calcination, and template removal for adsorbing bitter cyclolinopeptide E. Subsequently, a series of adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the influence of various parameters on adsorption capacity and explain adsorption performance of the biochar. WBSC-30, prepared at 30 °C, exhibited the highest adsorption efficiency (93.66 %) due to its optimal specific surface area, pore size (12.04 nm), and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups, enabling simultaneo

Influences of a diet supplemented with linseed oil and antioxidants on quality of equine semen after cooling and cryopreservation during winter.

Seasonal changes in the reproductive physiology of stallions contribute to a decrease in the quality of frozen-thawed semen during late winter. Changes in the lipid composition of the sperm plasma membrane may contribute to this phenomenon. In the present study, we have, therefore, investigated the effects of adding linseed oil (LO) in combination with antioxidants to the diet of breeding stallions on the motility and membrane integrity of cooled-stored and cryopreserved semen. Starting in November, the diet of LO stallions (n = 6) but not control (C) stallions (n = 5) was supplemented with LO

Effect of High Temperature and Drought on the Fatty Acid Composition of Oil of Different Linseed Varieties and Its Association with Gene Expression.

Flax is an important food and industrial crop. Linolenic acid (LIN) content of linseed oil differs greatly among varieties, ranging from 2% to 70%. In addition to genetic factors, environmental conditions can also significantly impact the fatty acid composition of linseed oil. Our study aimed to compare the effects of different temperature and watering conditions on the fatty acid composition of oil from nine flax varieties with diverse LIN content induced by genotype. Elevated temperature with reduced watering resulted in increased oleic acid (OLE) levels in all varieties. Decreases in linole

Vitrification-Controlled Curing of Epoxidized Linseed Oil Resins: Kinetics, TTT Analysis, and Thermomechanical Performance with Anhydride and Amine Curing Agents.

Epoxidized linseed oil (ELO) is a promising biobased alternative to petrochemical epoxy precursors, with a curing behavior strongly influenced by the chemistry of the curing agent and the resulting network architecture. In this study, ELO was synthesized via the Shi epoxidation approach and subsequently cured with either methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride (ELO-AD) or a fatty amine agent (ELO-AM). Although epoxy-amine reactions exhibit lower activation energies (19-26 kJ·mol-1) than the epoxy-anhydride system (40-45 kJ·mol-1), the overall curing efficiency is governed by vitrification and diffu

Linseed oil supplementation alters milk fatty acid profile, mitigates heat stress, and improves summer milk yield in grazing dairy cows.

Dietary supplementation of fat can be an important source of energy to compensate for the reduction in dry matter intake in dairy cows during heat stress periods. Studies have reported that supplementing dairy cow diets with linseed oil (LO) can increase milk yield and enhance the levels of beneficial fatty acids, such as omega-3 fatty acids, in the milk. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of LO supplementation on milk fatty acids profile, milk yield and composition, and physiological parameters of grazing cows. The study was conducted in two seasons, one in spring and o

Calcium salts of long-chain fatty acids from linseed oil decrease methane production by altering the rumen microbiome in vitro.

Calcium salts of long-chain fatty acids (CSFA) from linseed oil have the potential to reduce methane (CH4) production from ruminants; however, there is little information on the effect of supplementary CSFA on rumen microbiome as well as CH4 production. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of supplementary CSFA on ruminal fermentation, digestibility, CH4 production, and rumen microbiome in vitro. We compared five treatments: three CSFA concentrations-0% (CON), 2.25% (FAL) and 4.50% (FAH) on a dry matter (DM) basis-15 mM of fumarate (FUM), and 20 mg/kg DM of monensin (MON).

Curcumin and linseed oil co-delivered in phospholipid nanoemulsions enhances the levels of docosahexaenoic acid in serum and tissue lipids of rats.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an important long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) primarily found in marine fishes. The diets of vegetarian population do not contain preformed DHA, but they can derive it from shorter chain α-linolenic acid (ALA) found in plant oils. However, the conversion efficiency of ALA to DHA is minimal in human adults. This may cause insufficiency of DHA in the vegetarian population. Curcumin, diferuloyl methane found in the spice turmeric, has the potential to increase the formation of DHA from ALA by activating the enzymes FADS2 and elongase 2. The presen
