[Surgical treatment of malignant lip tumors. Personal experience].

The malignant tumours of the lip account for nearly 1-2% of the cervicofacial neoplasms. These lesions are frequently spinous cell carcinomas and basal cell carcinomas (25% of all oral cancers). The spinous cell carcinoma is mainly located in the lower lip, the basal cell carcinoma is more common in the upper lip. The incidence of lip cancer in males is much high than in females. The etiopathogenesis of these lesions is connected with exposure to sun, smoking, genetics predisposition (mutation of the p53 suppressor factor) and with the evolution of precancerous lesions (radiodermatitis, chroni

Multinucleate cell angiohistiocytoma of the lower vermilion lip: an unusual site.

Multinucleate cell angiohistiocytoma (MCA) represent an uncommon benign fibrohistiocytic vascular lesion that sometimes may go undiagnosed because of its clinical and histopathological similarities with benign fibrous histiocytoma and other soft-tissue neoplasms especially when localized on oral cavity or semi mucosa. We report the case of a solitary multinucleate cell angiohistiocytoma on the lower lip of a 46-year-old woman suggesting that this rare lesion should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the oral soft-tissue neoplasms.

Oral malignant neoplasia: a survey of 428 cases in two Zimbabwean hospitals.

A review of oral malignant neoplasms biopsies accessioned in the pathology services of Harare Central Hospital and Parirenyatwa Hospital, Harare, Zimbabwe, during the 10year period January 1982 to December 1991 was carried out. Clinical records of 428 patients with histologically diagnosed oral malignant neoplasms by ICD-O type and site (COO.O-CO6.9) were retrieved and analyzed for gender, age, history of tobacco and alcohol usage, neoplastic type and histologic differentiation of squamous cell carcinoma (8000/3). Oral malignant neoplasms constituted 24.8% (n = 428) of the 1723 biopsies access

Indolent Tumour of the Upper Lip: A Case of Lobulated Acinic Cell Carcinoma.

A majority of minor salivary gland neoplasms are encountered more frequently on the upper lip when compared to lower lip lesions. Although upper lip tumours generally turn out to be benign adenomas in the form of monomorphic adenomas and pleomorphic adenomas in 90% of the cases, rarely, a few indolent masses turn out to be carcinomas. Here, we report a long standing indolent upper lip swelling, which turned out to be a low-grade acinic cell carcinoma (ACiCa). Minor salivary gland tumours (MSGTs), considered as benign clinically, should be evaluated histopathologically for the confirmation of d

ALK-positive compound Spitz nevus with extensive perineural and intraneural neurotropism.

Historically recognized by their characteristic histopathologic features, Spitz neoplasms are now known to be molecularly defined by mutually exclusive recurrent abnormalities that cause activation of the MAPK pathway. Spitz neoplasms with ALK rearrangements frequently demonstrate polypoid growth with a plexiform arrangement of nested, fusiform melanocytes in intersecting fascicles. Although neurotropism has been described in indolent Spitz neoplasms, this feature is not frequently mentioned in publications on histopathologic assessment of this group of melanocytic tumors. Here, we present an

Influence of the patient's demographic profile and tumor characteristics on reconstructive techniques in lip cancers.

With an incidence of approximately 30% of all oral cavity neoplasms, lip cancer significantly impacts the patient quality of life (QoL). The frequent localization is in the lower lip, predominantly affecting men aged between 60-70 years old. The surgical treatment aims at aesthetic and functional reconstruction of the lip. The present study aims at defining a demographic profile of patients with lip cancer and at establishing correlations between tumor characteristics and reconstruction methods. The analysis of the group of 26 patients showed that the lip cancer patient was predominantly femal

Primary Mammary Analog Secretory Carcinoma (MASC) of the Vulva With ETV6-NTRK3 Fusion: A Case Report.

Mammary analog secretory carcinoma is a primary salivary gland neoplasm with histologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular features identical to those of secretory carcinoma of the breast. Similar neoplasms have now been reported to occur in various nonmammary sites including the parotid gland, submandibular gland, sinuses, lip, skin, thyroid gland, and lung. We report, to our knowledge, the first example of a primary vulvar neoplasm with pathologic features identical to secretory carcinoma of the breast and an ETV6-NTRK3 fusion.

Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Upper Lip: A Case Report.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most frequently encountered benign mixed tumor of the minor salivary gland and usually presents in the parotid; however, in the minor salivary gland, it is more common in the palate. Tumors of the minor salivary glands are uncommon, with the most common intraoral site reported being the hard and soft palate owing to the preponderance of minor salivary glands in this region followed by the lips. Pleomorphic adenoma arising from minor salivary glands of the lips tends to occur at an earlier age than it does at other sites. Pleomorphic adenoma of the lip is a rare neopl

Electrochemotherapy Treatment for Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Lip: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant tumor that affects the skin and mucous membranes. It may present as painless superficial lesions, or as rapidly growing, exophytic masses, sometimes ulcerated, which can invade and damage surrounding tissues. It is the second most common malignant neoplasm of the skin, characterized by high clinical variability, which makes early diagnosis and timely treatment essential to improve prognosis. The aim of this case report is to evaluate the clinical efficacy, tolerability, and durability of response of electrochemotherapy in the treatment of cuta

[Unusual location of mucous extravasation cyst: report of two cases].

INTRODUCTION: The most common location of mucous extravasation cyst is the lower lip followed by buccal mucosa and ventral surface of the tongue. It very rarely occurs on the upper lip. OBSERVATION: A 17-year-old man consulted for a firm sub-mucosal nodule of the upper lip. The nodule was removed and the histological examination identified a pseudocyst characterized by a mucus pool without any epithelial lining, surrounded by granulation tissue. A similar observation was made in a 58-year-old woman who consulted for a recurrent translucent vesicle of the upper lip. There was no recurrence in

A verruciform xanthoma of the lower lip and review of the differential diagnosis.

A careful examination of lips is often neglected by the members of the medical and dental professions; yet the lips reveal a heterogeneous group of lesions ranging from congenital abnormalities to benign and malignant neoplasms. Verruciform Xanthoma (VX) is an uncommon benign inflammatory mucocutaneous condition that occurs in the oral cavity which was first described by Shafer in 1971. It is often associated with pre-existing epithelial and/or inflammatory disorder and is characterized histopathologically by papillary epithelial hyperplasia and the presence of foamy macrophages in connective

Pyogenic granuloma of the lip - treatment with carbon dioxide slush cryosurgery as an approach in a resource-poor country.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a benign vascular neoplasm most often evident as a rapidly developing solitary, sessile, or polypoid vascular nodule or tumor prone to ulceration or hemorrhage. Bleeding may be episodic, copious, and refractory to pressure, mandating treatment, particularly when on the lip. We describe a 14-year-old adolescent with a PG of the lower lip that responded to carbon dioxide slush cryosurgery, an option that may be of considerable value in a resource-poor country.

Salivary gland cancer and risk of subsequent skin cancer.

There are epidemiologic similarities between salivary and skin neoplasms that could be attributed to exposure to ultraviolet radiation. To explore further the etiologic parallels between these two types of cancer, we studied the multiple primary association between salivary gland cancer with that of other cancers known to be induced by ultraviolet light exposure, using data from the SEER program for 1973-1984. Because nonmelanoma skin cancers other than cancers of the lip are not routinely reported to the SEER registries, we specifically evaluated the associations with melanoma and lip cancers

Canalicular adenoma: palatal presentation of an uncommon lesion.

Canalicular adenoma is a unique, rare, benign salivary gland neoplasm whose reported prevalence varies in different studies. According to literature, this neoplasm has a marked predilection to occur in the upper lip of elderly women. Histological features are usually distinctive and diagnostic. This neoplasm has good prognosis after conservative surgical management but the propensity of multifocal nature and recurrence of this lesion mandates regular follow-up. This case report illustrates the case of a canalicular adenoma in the palate in a 71-year-old male patient. Here, we discuss the diffe

Adenoid cystic carcinoma located on the lower lip.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a relatively rare epithelial tumor of the major and minor salivary glands that makes up less than 1% of head and neck neoplasms. The typical clinical and pathological findings of this neoplasm include slow growth, perineural invasion, multiple local recurrences, and distant metastasis. Herein, we report a patient with adenoid cystic carcinoma located to the lower lip which is quite uncommon.

Acinic cell carcinoma of buccal mucosa: An unusual presentation.

Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a rare epithelial malignant neoplasm of salivary glands affecting predominantly the female population. Unusual occurrences of this neoplasm are reported in hard palate, maxillary sinuses, lip, etc. [1] We report one such case where a submandibular swelling that is provisionally diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma due to its clinical and radiological findings, turned out to be ACC on histopathological evaluation.

The Diagnostic Considerations and Clinical Management of Lower Lip Swellings in Adolescents: A Narrative Review.

This article outlines a systematic workflow for the clinical management of lip swellings, ensuring an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. The process involves a thorough clinical examination and necessary diagnostic investigations such as imaging and biopsy, which will guide treatment decisions. Depending on the findings, treatment may range from conservative management to surgical excision. Further, we have covered a range of potential conditions including benign lesions such as fibroma, hemangioma, and pyogenic granuloma, as well as malignant neoplasms such as mucoepidermoid c

Actinomycosis of the upper lip.

Actinomycotic infections are known to have an association with difficulties in diagnosis and treatment. These infections usually involve the head, neck, thorax, and abdomen. Actinomycosis of the upper lip is a rare condition and an important one as well, because it can imitate other diseases. As the initial impression, it can easily be mistaken for a mucocele, venous lake, or benign neoplasm. An 82-year-old man presented with an asymptomatic normal skin colored nodule on the upper lip. Histopathologic findings showed an abscess and sulfur granules in the dermis. Gram staining results showed a
