Portuguese Parents' Literacy on Ankyloglossia.

Purpose: To evaluate Portuguese parents' knowledge about ankyloglossia, examine how it may affect child development, and describe diagnostic and treatment practices of the condition. Methods: During March 2025, a 6-section multiple-choice questionnaire, based on an Australian study, assessed Portuguese parents' knowledge of ankyloglossia both in person at a university pediatric dental clinic and online. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, using Fisher's exact tests with Monte Carlo simulations. Results: This study collected 259 valid responses, predominantly from the central re

Literacy in nonspeaking autistic people.

Many autistic people who do not talk cannot tell other people what they know or what they are thinking. As a result, they might not be able to go to the schools they want, share feelings with friends, or get jobs they like. It might be possible to teach them to type on a computer or tablet instead of talking. But first, they would have to know how to spell. Some people do not believe that nonspeaking autistic people can learn to spell. We did a study to see if they can. We tested 31 autistic teenagers and adults who do not talk much or at all. They played a game on an iPad where they had to ta

The Home Literacy Environment Is a Correlate, but Perhaps Not a Cause, of Variations in Children's Language and Literacy Development.

The home literacy environment is a well-established predictor of children's language and literacy development. We investigated whether formal, informal, and indirect measures of the home literacy environment predict children's reading and language skills once maternal language abilities are taken into account. Data come from a longitudinal study of children at high risk of dyslexia (N = 251) followed from preschool years. Latent factors describing maternal language were significant predictors of storybook exposure but not of direct literacy instruction. Maternal language and phonological skill

Hydration health literacy in the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate hydration in the elderly is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. However, few studies have addressed the knowledge of elderly individuals regarding hydration in health and disease. Gaps in health literacy have been identified as a critical component in health maintenance, and promoting health literacy should improve outcomes related to hydration associated illnesses in the elderly. METHODS: We administered an anonymous survey to community-dwelling elderly (n = 170) to gauge their hydration knowledge. RESULTS: About 56% of respondents reported consuming >6

Lexical restructuring in the absence of literacy.

Vocabulary growth was suggested to prompt the implementation of increasingly finer-grained lexical representations of spoken words in children (e.g., [Metsala, J. L., & Walley, A. C. (1998). Spoken vocabulary growth and the segmental restructuring of lexical representations: precursors to phonemic awareness and early reading ability. In J. L. Metsala & L. C. Ehri (Eds.), Word recognition in beginning literacy (pp. 89-120). Hillsdale, NJ: Erlbaum.]). Although literacy was not explicitly mentioned in this lexical restructuring hypothesis, the process of learning to read and spell might also have

Literacy and risk of occupational injury.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether low literacy skills are a risk factor for occupational injury during a 5.3-year follow-up period. METHODS: The study population was taken from the Danish participants in the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) in 2011/2012. Literacy skills were based on the PIAAC survey. Data on occupational injuries were obtained from national registers. We included the 5997 employees aged 16-65 who worked during the follow-up period. We used Cox regression to estimate the risk of occupational injury as a function of literacy skills. We adju

Handwriting: A neglected cornerstone of literacy.

This paper discusses the necessity for teaching children to have readable automatic handwriting. As demonstrated by a search of the literature, educational institutions in both the United States and Great Britain display a lack of concern about the importance of handwriting in school curricula. Researchers display a similar lack of concern as evidenced by the scarcity of major research studies on handwriting. They appear to be unaware of the benefits of effective early teaching. Often the choice of what to teach, how to teach, and when to teach is left up to the discretion of individual teache

Genetic differential susceptibility in literacy-delayed children: a randomized controlled trial on emergent literacy in kindergarten.

In this randomized controlled trial, 508 5-year-old kindergarten children participated, of whom 257 were delayed in literacy skills because they belonged to the lowest quartile of a national standard literacy test. We tested the hypothesis that some children are more susceptible to school-entry educational interventions than their peers due to their genetic makeup, and thus whether the dopamine receptor D4 gene moderated intervention effects. Children were randomly assigned to a control condition or one of two interventions involving computer programs tailored to the literacy needs of delayed

Postpartum depression literacy among economically disadvantaged Indian working women: roles of health literacy and social determinants.

PURPOSE: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a serious mental health concern with a high prevalence in India. For working women from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, awareness of PPD symptoms and available support is essential for early detection and management. However, due to the social stigma associated with mental disorder, general health literacy may not automatically translate into postpartum depression literacy (PPDL). This study investigates the key determinants of PPDL among economically disadvantaged working women in urban India. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in H

Morphological Awareness: Connecting Language Foundations and Academic Literacy Success for Students With Language and Literacy Deficits.

PURPOSE: For school-age students with language and literacy deficits (LLD), such as those with developmental language disorder (DLD) and/or dyslexia, literacy challenges can affect reading comprehension, written language, and overall academic success. Researchers have established that instruction in morphological awareness, especially with a phonological, orthographic, semantic, and syntactic focus, results in positive reading and writing outcomes. The purpose of this clinical focus article is to provide evidence for a multilinguistic literacy intervention approach grounded in morphological aw
