Cirrhosis is characterized as the progress of regenerative nodules surrounded by fibrous bands in response to chronic hepatic injury and causes portal hypertension and end-stage hepatic disease. Following liver injury, liver progenitor cells (LPCs) can be activated and differentiate into hepatocytes in order to awaken liver regeneration and reach homeostasis. Recent research has uncovered some new sources of LPCs. Here, we update the mechanisms of LPCs-mediated liver regeneration in cirrhosis by introducing the origin of LPCs and LPCs' niche with a discussion of the influence of LPC-related ce

Scanning was used to study liver regeneration in 84 patients operated on for echinococcus liver disease. The conclusion was reached that after an operation on the liver the shape of the liver was the most difficult to restore and easiest was its structure. The degree of restoration of the liver is closely connected with the age of the patient, the postoperative period, and the number of surgical interventions.

Liver diseases are leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Therefore, the development of new treatments for liver disease is urgent. An integral part of the treatment of any liver disease is the process of regeneration of its parenchyma. However, the current approach to studying mammalian liver regeneration is one-sided, focusing solely on the liver itself and neglecting its interactions with other organs. This includes organs of the functional excretory system, such as the lungs and kidneys, which can secrete factors, including HGF, EGF, TGFβ, IL6, and others, into the bloodstream,

Lipid metabolism, particularly triglyceride (TG) metabolism, is crucial for liver regeneration. During the early phase of liver regeneration, the liver temporarily accumulates a substantial amount of TG-dominated lipids. However, the specific composition of the TG profile during this phase is not yet fully understood. Here, we showed that the TG molecular composition in the liver was significantly altered during liver regeneration following carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver injury. Lipid accumulation in livers was observed as early as 12 hours after CCl4 treatment, with transient regen

UNLABELLED: We previously reported that mice subjected to partial hepatectomy exhibit rapid development of hypoglycemia followed by transient accumulation of fat in the early regenerating liver. We also showed that disrupting these metabolic alterations results in impaired liver regeneration. The studies reported here were undertaken to further characterize and investigate the functional importance of changes in systemic adipose metabolism during normal liver regeneration. The results showed that a systemic catabolic response is induced in each of two distinct, commonly used experimental model

OBJECTIVE: Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-9, a member of the transforming growth factor-β family of cytokines, is constitutively produced in the liver. Systemic levels act on many organs and tissues including bone and endothelium, but little is known about its hepatic functions in health and disease.
DESIGN: Levels of BMP-9 and its receptors were analysed in primary liver cells. Direct effects of BMP-9 on hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and hepatocytes were studied in vitro, and the role of BMP-9 was examined in acute and chronic liver injury models in mice.
RESULTS: Quiescent and activated

The intestine and liver share a unique regenerative property that sets them apart from other mammalian visceral organs. The intestinal epithelium exhibits rapid renewal, making it one of the fastest renewing tissues in humans. Under physiological conditions, intestinal stem cells within each intestinal crypt continuously differentiate into the different types of intestinal epithelial cells to maintain intestinal homeostasis. However, when exposed to tissue damage or stressful conditions such as inflammation, intestinal epithelial cells in the gastrointestinal tract exhibit plasticity, allowing

The liver has unique regeneration potential, which ensures the continuous dependence of the human body on hepatic functions. As the composition and function of gut microbiota has been gradually elucidated, the vital role of gut microbiota in liver regeneration through gut-liver axis has recently been accepted. In the process of liver regeneration, gut microbiota composition is changed. Moreover, gut microbiota can contribute to the regulation of the liver immune microenvironment, thereby modulating the release of inflammatory factors including IL-6, TNF-α, HGF, IFN-γ and TGF-β, which involve i

This review considers experimental findings on splenic repair, obtained in two types of small animal (mouse, rat, and rabbit) models: splenic resections and autologous transplantations of splenic tissue. Resection experiments indicate that the spleen is able to regenerate, though not necessarily to the initial volume. The recovery lasts one month and preserves the architecture, albeit with an increase in the relative volume of lymphoid follicles. The renovated tissues, however, exhibit skewed functional profiles; notably, the decreased production of antibodies and the low cytotoxic activity of

The liver fulfills central roles in metabolic control and detoxification and, as such, is continuously exposed to a plethora of insults. Importantly, the liver has a unique ability to regenerate and can completely recoup from most acute, non-iterative insults. However, multiple conditions, including viral hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), long-term alcohol abuse and chronic use of certain medications, can cause persistent injury in which the regenerative capacity eventually becomes dysfunctional, resulting in hepatic scaring and cirrhosis. Calcium is a versatile secondary m

Cellular crosstalk is a process through which a message is transmitted within an individual cell (intracellular crosstalk) or between different cells (intercellular crosstalk). Intercellular crosstalk within the liver microenvironment is critical for the maintenance of normal hepatic functions and for cells survival. Hepatic cells are closely connected to each other, work in synergy, and produce molecules that modulate their differentiation and activity. This review summarises the current knowledge regarding paracrine communication networks in parenchymal and non-parenchymal cells in liver fib

Liver regeneration is perhaps the most studied example of compensatory growth aimed to replace loss of tissue in an organ. Hepatocytes, the main functional cells of the liver, manage to proliferate to restore mass and to simultaneously deliver all functions hepatic functions necessary to maintain body homeostasis. They are the first cells to respond to regenerative stimuli triggered by mitogenic growth factor receptors MET (the hepatocyte growth factor receptor] and epidermal growth factor receptor and complemented by auxiliary mitogenic signals induced by other cytokines. Termination of liver

PURPOSE: To determine the impact of hypertension in liver regeneration, in rats by examining gain in liver mass and the replication of hepatocytes and stellate cells.
METHODS: Forty Wistar rats were allocated into two groups of twenty, the control and experiment group. The experiment group animals were submitted to induction of renovascular hypertension. A week later, all the animals underwent a partial hepatectomy. Measurements were taken after 24 hours and seven days, when ten animals in each group were euthanized. Thus, four subgroups were obtained. The livers were excised and sent for his

The liver possesses a unique regenerative capacity, driven by mechanisms that extend beyond classical growth factor signaling. Recent studies underscore the importance of metabolic reprogramming, mitochondrial adaptation, and signaling metabolites in promoting tissue injury repair. Dynamic crosstalk between hepatocytes, non-parenchymal cells, and other organs governs the regenerative process. Spatial compartmentalization within the liver and systemic cues from adipose tissue, the pancreas, the gut, the brain, skeletal muscle, and other organs play critical roles in shaping regenerative outcome

PURPOSE: The colon and ileum play significant roles on liver physiology. Studies about simultaneous hepatectomy and colectomy or enterectomy are scarce and controversial. We investigated and compared the effects of ileum and colon resection on liver regeneration.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty four Wistar rats were allocated in group I-(sham), group II-70% hepatectomy; group III-70% hepatectomy + ileal resection, and group IV-70% hepatectomy + partial colectomy. On the sixth day, serum hepatic enzymes, albumin, hepatocyte growth-factor (HGF) and transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-α) were me

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The adult liver is the main detoxification organ and routinely is exposed to environmental insults but retains the ability to restore its mass and function upon tissue damage. However, extensive injury can lead to liver failure, and chronic injury causes fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Currently, the transcriptional regulation of organ repair in the adult liver is incompletely understood.
METHODS: We isolated nuclei from quiescent as well as repopulating hepatocytes in a mouse model of hereditary tyrosinemia, which recapitulates the injury and repopulatio

Although viral hepatitis treatments have evolved over the years, the resultant liver cirrhosis still does not completely heal. Platelets contain proteins required for hemostasis, as well as many growth factors required for organ development, tissue regeneration and repair. Thrombocytopenia, which is frequently observed in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) and cirrhosis, can manifest from decreased thrombopoietin production and accelerated platelet destruction caused by hypersplenism; however, the relationship between thrombocytopenia and hepatic pathogenesis, as well as the role of pla
