BACKGROUND: Both ossification of the yellow ligament (OYL) and the ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament are relatively rare clinical entities. We report a extremely rare case of the spinal canal stenosis because of OYL, OPLL and listhesis at the cervicothoracic junction.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 69-year-old man had progressive pain over his bilateral axillar portion and right lower extremity for 1 year. Radiology showed cervical canal stenosis with ossification of OYL, OPLL, and listhesis at the cervicothoracic junction. Posterior decompression therapy was performed, and he recovere

OPLL is considered as a multi-factorial disease influenced by genetic and environmental factors. To identify genetic factors for OPLL, Genetic Study Group of Investigation Committee on Ossification of the Spinal Ligament performed a genome-wide association study(GWAS)using 1,660 OPLL patients. The study group identified six susceptibility loci for OPLL:20p12.3(rs2423294:P= 1.10 × 10(-13)), 8q23.1(rs374810:P= 1.88 × 10(-13)),12p11.22(rs1979679:P= 4.34 × 10(-12)), 12p12.2(rs11045000:P= 2.95 × 10(-11)),8q23.3(rs13279799:P= 1.28 × 10(-10))and 6p21.1(rs927485:P= 9.40 × 10(-9)).A further functional

We report a case of quadriplegia complicating ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) in a patient who was also found to have diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). She also had osteomalacia (Vit. D deficiency) with secondary hyperparathyroidism. There could be a cause and effect relationship between the abnormal biochemistry and OPLL.

Laminectomy, which had long been used for treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy, including ossification of the longitudinal ligament in the cervical spine, had numerous complications such as postoperative malalignment of the cervical spine and vulnerability of the spinal cord caused by total removal of the posterior structures. In 1977 Hirabayashi devised an open door expansive laminoplasty, which is a relatively easier and safer procedure than laminectomy, that eliminated such problems by preserving the posterior elements. The decompression effect of the expansive laminoplasty against

Ossification of the ligamentum longitudinale posterius is a rare disease found in particular in Japan and southeastern Asia. In the literature it is described as the so-called Japanese disease or OPLL syndrome. The disease takes a slow, frequently asymptomatic, course but may cause severe stenosis of the spinal canal with neurological disorders, OPLL occurs frequently concurrently with ankylosing spondylitis, hypertrophic spondylosis, diffuse idiopathic hyperostosis of the skeleton. Own observation: a 68-year-old man with a long history of cervicalgia, subsequently paraesthesias of the upper e

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL), though commonly reported among the Japanese population, has however been infrequently reported among other racial groups. It has not been reported among black Africans. A case of OPLL of the cervical spine seen in a 62-year-old Nigerian woman is hereby reported.

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is most commonly found in men, in the elderly, and in Asian patients. The disease can start with mild or no symptoms, but some patients progress slowly to develop symptoms of myelopathy. An accurate diagnosis through the use plain radiograph, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging findings is very important to monitor the development of symptoms and to make decisions regarding a treatment plan. When symptoms are mild and non-progressive, conservative treatments and periodic observations are good enough, but once symptoms o

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a disease of progressive ectopic calcification of the PLL of the spine. It occurs most frequently in the cervical spine, followed by the thoracic spine. The disease was first described in the Japanese population, and the prevalence of OPLL is highest in Japan at a rate of 1.9%-4.3%. Note, however, that OPLL is also seen and is a known cause of cervical myelopathy in other Asian countries and in the white population. Research into the underlying cause of OPLL over the past few decades has shown that it is a multifactorial disease wit

Ossification of the cervical posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) represents a continuum beginning with hypertrophy of the posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL) followed by progressive coalescence of centers of chondrification and ossification. Early OPLL mimicking disc disease appears opposite multiple disc spaces associated with significant retrovertebral extension, helping to differentiate it from spondylosis. On computerized tomography examinations, the single- and double-layer signs indicate possible dural penetration with the increased potential for an intraoperative cerebrospinal flui

Vitamin A and its synthetic congeners are known to produce a variety of skeletal abnormalities in patients on prolonged treatment with these medications. Two patients are described who developed posterior longitudinal ligament ossification following treatment with the synthetic retinoid 13-cis-retinoic acid. In both cases, this finding became apparent after other retinoid-induced skeletal abnormalities were observed and was less marked than the ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament. Although spinal cord compression did not occur in our patients, patients on long-term retinoid ther

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) and ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) are prototypical ectopic spinal ossification disorders, but objective methods for early activity detection and prognostication remain limited. We evaluated ossification trajectories, blood biomarkers, circulating microRNAs, and genetic susceptibility for progression stratification. We analyzed 694 health-screening participants who underwent CT at baseline and follow-up (≥5 years); DISH was scored level-by-level and OPLL was assessed across all levels, using age- and sex-matched contro

Descriptive case report. To report a case of a diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) patient with both massive ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament (OALL) leading to severe dysphagia as well as ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) causing mild cervical myelopathy, warranting not only an anterior approach but also a posterior one.Although DISH can cause massive OALL in the cervical spine, severe dysphagia resulting from DISH is a rare occurrence. OALLs are frequently associated with OPLL. Treatment for a DISH patient with OPLL in setting of OALL-caus

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Lumbar ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (L-OPLL) has been underrecognized and remains poorly characterized clinically. We hypothesized that L-OPLL constitutes a distinct phenotype within the broader OPLL spectrum, sharing features of obesity and diffuse spinal ligament ossification.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical and radiographic features of L-OPLL and assess their relationship with diffuse spinal ligament ossification and obesity-related factors.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study with a replication cohort.
PATIENT SAMPLE: A total of 186 patients

Combinations of varying degrees of spondylosis and/or ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL), and ossification of the yellow ligament (OYL) contribute to thoracic and lumbar neural compression in North Americans. Preoperative magnetic resonance and computed tomography examinations dictated the surgical approaches used to address spondylosis/OPLL in 11 patients, OYL in 12 patients, and spondylosis/OPLL and OYL in 3 patients. Myelopathy (4 patients), radiculopathy (13 patients), and cauda equina dysfunction (11 patients) were observed, 2 patients showing combined deficits. Ou

IMPORTANCE: Understanding the distribution of anterior longitudinal ligament (ALL) strength may guide graft fixation for sacrocolpopexy. However, variation in strength across the ligament's 2-dimensional surface has not been fully characterized.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the variation in ALL pullout strength along craniocaudal and mediolateral dimensions within the presacral space to inform the optimal location for sacrocolpopexy graft fixation.
STUDY DESIGN: This was an anatomic study of 10 unembalmed female cadavers. A grid with 1-cm × 1-cm increments was su

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a kind of disease that involves a variety of factors leading to ectopic bone deposition of the spinal ligament. Although the detailed mechanism is not clear, genetic factors play important roles in the development of this disease. Noncoding RNA (ncRNA) refers to an RNA molecule that is not translated into a protein but participates in the regulation of gene expression. Functionally important types of ncRNA associated with OPLL include long noncoding RNA, microRNA, and circular RNA. We listed the differentially expressed ncRNAs in OP

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) occurs as heterotopic bone forms in the posterior longitudinal ligament, resulting in neural compression, myelopathy, and radiculopathy. OPLL is most commonly observed in East Asian populations, with prevalence rates of 1.9% to 4.3% reported in Japan. OPLL rates are lower in North American and European patients, with reported prevalence of 0.1% to 1.7%. Patients typically develop symptoms due to OPLL in their cervical spines. The etiology of OPLL is multifactorial, including genetic, metabolic, and anatomic factors. Asymptomatic or sym

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) can be defined as an ectopic ossification in the tissues of spinal ligament showing a hyperostotic condition. OPLL is developed mostly in the cervical spine and clinical presentations of OPLL are majorly myelopathy and/or radiculopathy, with serious neurological pathology resulting in paralysis of extremities and disturbances of motility lowering the quality of life. OPLL is known to be an idiopathic and multifactorial disease, which genetic factors and non-genetic factors including diet, obesity, physical strain on the posterior longi
