ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Mistletoe extracts (decoctions) are used traditionally in eastern Nigeria for the management of bone pain, post menopausal syndrome and diabetes amongst several other ailments. While scientific evidence supporting its folkloric use as an antidiabetic agent has been documented, the age-long practice of its use in treatment of post menopausal syndrome has not been scientifically validated. Postmenopausal osteoporosis accounts for one of the prevalent disease conditions in aging population globally. This situation is exacerbated by the lack of osteogenic therapy. I

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pollinator-mediated selection is a primary driver of floral trait evolution, yet how far phylogenetic history constrains this process remains poorly understood in aerial parasitic plants, whose reproduction depends entirely on animal mutualists. We studied floral divergence in four southern South American Loranthaceae mistletoes: Tristerix aphyllus, T. corymbosus, T. verticillatus, and Desmaria mutabilis, spanning three nested divergence times (Eocene-Pleistocene): an Eocene intergeneric split, a Miocene intrageneric divergence, and a Pleistocene sister-species speciation

The Loranthus genus has been demonstrated to be used in the treatment of wide range of diseases e.g. diabetes, inflammations and cancers. Many species of Loranthus represent a major source of biologically active constituents. Therefore, our study was carried out to investigate the anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of Loranthus acaciae Zucc. (Loranthaceae) grown in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, our research concerned the guided-fractionation and isolation of possible active compounds from this species. The crude ethanolic extract and its n-hexane, chloroform and n-butanol fract

Overexpression of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), which is linked to multidrug resistance (MDR), is one of the underlying obstacles to the success of chemotherapy as it reduces the efficacy of anticancer drugs and the side effects of these increase as a result of any increased dose to achieve the therapeutic effect. To identify agents with P-gp inhibitory properties, ethanol extracts from 80 plants were screened for their ability to increase intracellular doxorubicin-associated fluorescence, and the extract of Ligaria cuneifolia was found to be the most effective. Its bioassay-guided isolation yielded

In the present study, L. ferrugineus methanol extract (LFME) was evaluated for its blood pressure lowering effect in anesthetized normotensive Sprague Dawley (SD) rats and its spasmogenic effect in isolated guinea pig ileum. The possible mechanism(s) of action were also investigated. LFME was obtained by Soxhlet extraction. The rats were fasted overnight and anesthetized with sodium pentobarbitone (60 mg/kg i.p.). LFME was administered in i.v. boluses in the concentrations of 25, 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg respectively, with concomitant monitoring of mean arterial pressure (MAP). It was found that
