BACKGROUND: End stage renal disease (ESRD) is characterized by autonomic dysfunction. During orthostatic stress, sympathetic (SNS) activity increases and parasympathetic (PNS) activity decreases to maintain arterial blood pressure (BP). We hypothesized that ESRD patients have impaired ability to adjust cardiac SNS and PNS activity during orthostasis, which could contribute to increased blood pressure variability, orthostatic intolerance and falls.
METHODS: We measured beat-to-beat BP and Electrocardiography at baseline and during increasing lower body negative pressure (LBNP) in 20 ESRD patie

Central hypovolemia elicited by application of lower body negative pressure (LBNP) has been used extensively to simulate hemorrhage in human subjects. Traditional LBNP protocols incorporate progressive steps in pressure held for specific time intervals. The aim of this study was to assess the reproducibility of applying continuous LBNP at a constant rate until presyncope to replicate actual bleeding. During two trials (≥4 weeks intervening), LBNP was applied at a rate of 3 mmHg/min in 18 healthy human subjects (12M; 6F) until the onset of presyncopal symptoms. Heart rate (HR), mean arterial pr

Following space flight or head down tilt bed rest, cardiovascular deconditioning is often observed as a failure to maintain arterial blood pressure with symptoms of presyncope or syncope. LBNP can be used as a stressor of the cardiovascular system to observe the regulatory process. We have recently developed a new method to study cardiovascular control. Coarse graining spectral analysis (CGSA), allows simultaneous extraction of the harmonic components to evaluate sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous activities, and of the underlying complexity of the physiological response as given by the s

INTRODUCTION: Methods most commonly used for detecting susceptibility to orthostatic hypotension in humans include head-up tilt and the application of lower body negative pressure (LBNP). The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of LBNP for detecting drug-induced changes in susceptibility to orthostatic hypotension in conscious monkeys (Macaca fascicularis).
METHODS: Orthostatic responses were produced using an airtight chamber, which sealed around the stomach (umbilical area) and enclosed the lower body, to which were applied successive decrements of 10 mmHg chamber pressure every

UNLABELLED: It has been reported in practice that the application of lower-body negative pressure (LBNP) to elite athletes during periods of intense training can help aid recovery.
PURPOSE: To examine the effects of LBNP on biochemical, pain, and performance parameters during a 5-d recovery period after a damaging plyometric-exercise bout.
DESIGN: Randomized controlled study.
METHODS: 24 healthy young female adults were randomly allocated into 2 groups. Before and 1, 24, 48, and 96 h after the damaging exercise for hamstrings (50 drop jumps and 50 leg curls), participants underwent a series

6 degrees head-down tilt bed rest experiment for 6 days was conducted at Nihon University Itabashi Hospital for 10 male athletes. In order to observe the orthostatic intolerance due to six days head-down tilt bed rest, 70 degrees head up tilt tests were performed before and after the head-down tilt. Two types of orthostatic intolerance were distinguished by the time course of their cardiovascular responses. One was vagotonia type and the other was brain anemia type. The latter type was commonly seen among astronauts after space flight due to the lack of plasma volume. As this volume change is

We hypothesised that vagal withdrawal and increased venous return interact in determining the rapid cardiac output (CO) response (phase I) at exercise onset. We used lower body negative pressure (LBNP) to increase blood distribution to the heart by muscle pump action and reduce resting vagal activity. We expected a larger increase in stroke volume (SV) and smaller for heart rate (HR) at progressively stronger LBNP levels, therefore CO response would remain unchanged. To this aim ten young, healthy males performed a 50 W exercise in supine position at 0 (Control), -15, -30 and -45 mmHg LBNP exp

BACKGROUND: It is well known that space travel cause post-flight orthostatic hypotension and it was assumed that autonomic cardiovascular control deteriorates in space. Lower body negative pressure (LBNP) was used to assess autonomic function of the cardiovascular system.
METHODS: LBNP tests were performed on six crew-members before and on the first days post-flight in a series of three space missions. Additionally, two of the subjects performed LBNP tests in-flight. LBNP mimics fluid distribution of upright posture in a gravity independent way. It causes an artificial sequestration of blood,

A directional sensitivity of the cerebral pressure-flow relationship has been described using repeated squat-stands. Oscillatory lower body negative pressure (OLBNP) is a reproducible method to characterize dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA). It could represent a safer method to examine the directional sensitivity of the cerebral pressure-flow relationship within clinical populations and/or during pharmaceutical administration. Therefore, examining the cerebral pressure-flow directional sensitivity during an OLBNP-induced cyclic physiological stress is crucial. We calculated changes in midd

BACKGROUND: The internal jugular vein (IJV) is the primary pathway for cerebral venous drainage in the supine position. Although lower body negative pressure (LBNP) is widely used to simulate central hypovolemia, the dose-response relationship between graded LBNP and jugular venous flow, and potential sex differences therein, remain incompletely characterized. We hypothesized that graded LBNP would produce a progressive, dose-dependent reduction in jugular venous flow, and examined whether this response differed between sexes.
METHODS: Forty-four healthy young adults (22 female, 22 male) unde

Head-up tilt (HUT) and lower-body negative pressure (LBNP) both reduce central blood volume but differ in heart orientation and regional fluid shifts. Whether they evoke comparable cardiovascular regulation when matched for preload remains uncertain. We characterized differences in fluid redistribution and haemodynamic responses during graded HUT and LBNP at intensities eliciting equivalent reductions in thoracic blood volume (TBV). In a randomized crossover design, 30 young adults (16 healthy control subjects and 14 with type 1 diabetes) underwent both HUT (22°, 42°, 58° and 80°) and LBNP (-1

Orthostatic tolerance (OT) refers to the ability to maintain cardiovascular stability when upright, against the hydrostatic effects of gravity, and hence to maintain cerebral perfusion and prevent syncope (fainting). Various techniques are available to assess OT and the effects of gravitational stress upon the circulation, typically by reproducing a presyncopal event (near-fainting episode) in a controlled laboratory environment. The time and/or degree of stress required to provoke this response provides the measure of OT. Any technique used to determine OT should: enable distinction between p

We have shown previously that the heart rate variability (HRV) signal is fractal in nature with a high degree of complexity, as given by the calculated fractal dimension (DF). We have also reported that loss of complexity, as indicated by a reduction in DF of HRV, is associated with orthostatic hypotension and impending syncope. To extend this investigation of cardiovascular responses, we have investigated the signal characteristics of short-term systolic blood pressure variability (BPV) coincident with measurements of HRV during orthostatic stress. Eight healthy men completed a test protocol

The arterial baroreflex maintains blood pressure during mild-to-moderate orthostatic stress, but the roles of hydration status and sex in this response are unclear. This study used progressive lower-body negative pressure (LBNP) to examine how both fluid restriction and sex influence blood pressure regulation during central hypovolemia. Twenty-eight healthy young adults (15 females) completed two visits, in a counterbalanced order: 24-hr fluid restriction (hypohydrated) or 24-hr ad libitum fluid intake (euhydrated). Hydration status was assessed by changes in body mass and urine specific gravi

Steady-state tilt has no effect on cerebrovascular reactivity to increases in the partial pressure of end-tidal carbon dioxide (PETCO2). However, the anterior and posterior cerebral circulations may respond differently to a variety of stimuli that alter central blood volume, including lower body negative pressure (LBNP). Little is known about the superimposed effects of head-up tilt (HUT; decreased central blood volume and intracranial pressure) and head-down tilt (HDT; increased central blood volume and intracranial pressure), and LBNP on cerebral blood flow (CBF) responses. We hypothesized t

A headward fluid shift occurs during microgravity exposure, which causes the cardiovascular adaptive syndrome. Different countermeasures have been proposed to decrease its symptomatology, like the application of lower body negative pressure (LBNP). A LBNP box with an environment control system was developed, aiming to improve features of LBNP boxes used worldwide. It consists of five carbon steel ribs in the shape of a cylinder, which is wrapped with high pressure resistant and transparent vinyl. Inner and outer-wheeled trolleys can comfortably and easily move the subject in and out of the box

BACKGROUND: Endurance-trained males may be more prone to orthostatic hypotension than untrained subjects and this is reflected in differences in their cardiovascular responses to lower body negative pressure (LBNP). It is uncertain if the type of endurance training used affects these responses.
HYPOTHESIS: Endurance-trained runners will differ from endurance-trained swimmers in their cardiovascular responses to LBNP.
METHODS: Male intercollegiate cross country runners (XC, n = 9), sprinters (SP, n = 7) and swimmers (SW, n = 12) underwent exposures to -10, -20 and -40 mm Hg LBNP. Forearm bloo

The cardiovascular responses of non-diabetic and diabetic subjects to lower body negative pressure at 1.3, 2.7, and 5.3 kPa (10, 20, and 40 mmHg) were measured. The diabetics fell into two groups--those showing little change in systolic blood pressure with lower body negative pressure at 5.3 kPa (40 mmHg) and those showing falls greater than 2.7 kPa (20 mmHg). The patterns of response in the former group of diabetics and in the non-diabetics were similar. The diabetics who showed a fall in systolic blood pressure with lower body negative pressure nonetheless responded with a forearm vasoconstr

Moderate-intensity aerobic exercise increases cerebral blood velocity (CBv) primarily due to hyperpnea-induced vasodilation; however, the integrative control of cerebral blood flow (CBF) allows other factors to contribute to the vasodilation. Although lower body negative pressure (LBNP) can reduce CBv, the exact LBNP intensity required to blunt the aforementioned exercise-induced CBv response is unknown. This could hold utility for concussion recovery, allowing individuals to exercise at higher intensities without symptom exacerbation. Thirty-two healthy adults (age: 20-33 yr; 19 females/13 ma
