The sheep blowfly, Lucilia sericata Meigen (Diptera: Calliphoridae), causes sheep myiasis in various parts of the world. Female flies are attracted to sheep following various olfactory cues emanating from the sheep's body, and oviposit on suitable substrates on sheep ultimately causing myiasis. Earlier workers attempted to reduce fly population in the field, with some success, using traps baited with various attractants. This research was conducted to determine if L. sericata would respond to a recently developed synthetic attractant that has attracted gravid screwworms, Cochliomyia hominivora

This study amied to elucidate the case of an older patient suffering from aural myiasis caused by Lucilia sericata. An 81-year-old female patient with a history of middle ear surgery and dementia presented with bleeding in her right ear and visible worms. Upon initial examination, a larva was found crawling on the right auricle. Further examination revealed numerous larvae, purulent otorrhea, and active bleeding in the external auditory canal and mastoid cavity. All larvae were successfully removed with ear irrigation. The patient was diagnosed with otitis media and treated with antibiotic ear

Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) is a therapy with the medical use of sterile fly larvae of certain species, particularly those within the Calliphoridae family including green bottle fly, Lucilia sericata (Meigan, Diptera: Calliphoridae), for treating chronically infected wounds and ulcers. Lucilia sericata flies were maintained under insectary conditions, and the eggs were sterilized using three treatments: hydrogen peroxide solutions, used as a hand disinfectant (Treatment 1-T1), hydrogen peroxide, surface disinfectant (Treatment 2-T2), and SaniHigene (Treatment 3-T3) and the control (withou

Myiasis is a relatively common infection of animals kept as pets, although only 1 case of canine myiasis has been described so far in the Republic of Korea. In the present study, we report an additional case of canine wound myiasis with identification of its causative agent, Lucilia sericata. An 8-year-old male Siberian husky dog was referred with anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea to the Chungbuk National University Veterinary Medical Center, Cheongju-si (city), Chungcheongbuk-do (province), Korea in July 2013. Physical examination indicated the patient had a deep wound filled with a maggot swa

Lucilia sericata is one of the most studied species in forensic entomology due to its widespread distribution, forensic importance as well as medical use. The growth and development stage of maggots is often used to determine the post-mortem interval in forensic cases. L. sericata can cause myiasis in humans who are not able to maintain personal hygiene due to age or medical condition and can therefore be used to determine the time period of neglect. The influence of the temperature on the maggot development has been examined in various studies. Different examinations on the effects of toxic s

Myiasis or the infestation of the living, necrotic or dead tissues of the body of man or animals by the dipterous fly larvae is a world wide welfare problem. Consequently, control of these larvae attracted the attention of many authors. In this paper, the broad spectrum antiparasitic drug, ivermectin was used in-vitro against the larvae of the green bottle fly, Lucilia sericata. The LC 50 was found to be 9 ppm (0.76-1.5) and the slope function was 0.59. This means that ivermectin is a safe and very effective larvicide for L. sericata.

To examine the species composition of flies breeding in carrion in the field, the carcasses of mice and quail were exposed on sheep farms in the South West of England. Calliphora vicina was the dominant species of Diptera; 19,294 individuals emerged from 175 of the 241 infested carcasses recovered. Lucilia sericata emerged from only 39 of the infested carcasses, at a median of 10 adults per infested carcass. Other species of Lucilia present were L.ampullacea, L.caesar and L.illustris. The highest number of L.sericata emerged from carcasses placed in open pasture, the highest numbers of C.vicin

Lucilia sericata (Meigen) is a cosmopolitan synanthropic fly of forensic and medical importance, which can work as a mechanic vector of pathogens or cause myiasis of both human and sheep. As essential olfactory organs, antennae of adult L. sericata were examined with stereoscopic microscope, scanning electron microscope, and laser scanning confocal microscope. On antennal scape and pedicel, both microtirchiae and several bristles are detected, while another two structures, setiferous plaques and pedicellar buttons, are also found on the antennal pedicel. Seven subtypes of antennal sensilla are

A case of traumatic nosocomial myiasis caused by the green bottle fly Lucilia sericata (Meigen, 1826) occurred in a patient hospitalized following a serious road traffic accident. The patient had suffered extensive polytrauma particularly in the facial area of the skull. A total of 50 larvae was discovered in the oral cavity, nose, paranasal sinuses and enucleated eye-socket. Projected timing indicated that the eggs were laid while the patient was hospitalized. The development of myiasis was facilitated by the mental and physical debility and dependency of the patient, numerous and deep facial

We report here a case of oral myiasis in the Republic of Korea. The patient was a 37-year-old man with a 30-year history of Becker's muscular dystrophy. He was intubated due to dyspnea 8 days prior to admission to an intensive care unit (ICU). A few hours after the ICU admission, 43 fly larvae were found during suction of the oral cavity. All maggots were identified as the third instars of Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae) by morphology. We discussed on the characteristics of myiasis acquired in Korea, including the infection risk and predisposing factors.

BACKGROUND: Myiasis caused by Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is widely distributed throughout the world and affects both humans and animals. In addition, L. sericata larvae and adults may play a role in spreading causal agents of mycobacterial infections. Therefore, it is important to establish new and safe alternative methods of controlling this blowfly.
METHODS: The insecticidal effectiveness of four commercially available essential oils [lettuce (Lactuca sativa), chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), anise (Pimpinella anisum), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)] against third larval

OBJECTIVE: To partially characterise maggot-secreted antibacterial substances and determine their range of activity against different bacteria.
METHOD: Sterile and non-sterile maggots maintained in the laboratory and taken from chronic wounds of treated patients were used. Whole body extracts and haemolymph were fractionated and their range of activity against bacteria was tested using the zone of inhibition assay. The mode of action of bacterial destruction was examined by viable counts, influx of K+ and changes in the membrane potential by scanning electron microscope (SEM).
RESULTS: Extra

Larval therapy is a biological 'dressing' for chronic ulcers which is used for debridement, to initiate healing and to reduce bacteria and unpleasant odour. One condition for being able to employ larval therapy is access to disinfected larvae of good quality. We therefore started rearing Lucilia sericata larvae in 1998. Rearing necrophagous larvae in a hospital setting makes it essential to control odour. The improvement of the method includes the use of a controlled, humid, warm environment with artificial light and inexpensive disposable material, as well as the use of ready-made, constantly

Myiasis, the invasion of live human tissue by larvae of Diptera, is reported in the nasopharynx and a leg wound in two patients who were hospitalized for more than 72 hours in Mubarak Al-Kabeer Teaching Hospital in Kuwait City, Kuwait. On the fourth and fifth days after a 10-year-old Kuwaiti boy was admitted to the hospital intensive care unit in a bloodied and comatose state following a traffic accident, 'worms' that came out of his nostrils were fixed, cleared, and identified as second and third instar of Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae). After 14 days, 'worms' were seen in the orig
