Luminescent Amphiphilic Aminoglycoside Probes to Study Transfection.

We report the characterization of amphiphilic aminoglycoside conjugates containing luminophores with aggregation-induced emission properties as transfection reagents. These inherently luminescent transfection vectors are capable of binding plasmid DNA through electrostatic interactions; this binding results in an emission "on" signal due to restriction of intramolecular motion of the luminophore core. The luminescent cationic amphiphiles effectively transferred plasmid DNA into mammalian cells (HeLa, HEK 293T), as proven by expression of a red fluorescent protein marker. The morphologies of th

Ethylene sensing by silver(I) salt-impregnated luminescent films.

Luminescent oligomers and polymers doped with silver(I) salts were used as optical sensors for ethylene and other gaseous small molecules. Films of poly(vinylphenylketone) (PVPK) or 1,4-bis(methylstyryl)benzene (BMSB) impregnated with AgBF(4), AgSbF(6), or AgB(C(6)F(5))(4) respond to ethylene exposures with a reversible emission quenching that is proportional to the pressure of the gas. Experiments with various analytes revealed that only gases capable of forming coordinate bonds with Ag(I) ions (i.e., ethylene, propylene, and ammonia) produced a sensing response. Comparison of the effects of

Enhanced chemiluminescence determination of paracetamol.

Due to the severe consequences of potential overdoses of paracetamol (PCM) on the human body, the measurement of PCM in pharmaceutical and biological samples is essential. Therefore, a simple and rapid technique with a high detection limit and a wide linear range is presented here which plays a crucial role in detecting PCM's overdose leading to drug poisoning. This contribution illustrates a novel chemiluminescence (CL) system for the detection of PCM based on the chemiluminescence reaction between PCM and KMnO4. An enhanced CL was observed by the addition of rhodamine·6G within an SDS surfac

Effect of CaCN2 on the preparation of CaAlSiN3 :Eu2+ phosphors.

Highly efficient red-emitting phosphors, CaAlSiN3 :Eu2+ , were successfully prepared by the solid-state method using calcium cyanide (CaCN2 ) as the single calcium source. The influences of crystallization temperature, crystallization time, calcination mode and compounds ratio on the photoluminescent properties were investigated. The CaAlSiN3 :Eu2+ phosphors were obtained with 1 mol% CaCN2 by a two-step calcination procedure at 900°C for 2 h and subsequently at 1600°C for 8 h. The CaAlSiN3 :Eu2+ phosphors showed the strongest luminescent intensity at 660 nm when excited by 468 nm. With an incr

Synthesis, structure and luminescence properties of bifunctional KCaF3 phosphor influenced by incorporating Eu3+ ions for solid state lighting and TL dosimetry applications.

Europium doped KCaF3 phosphors (KCaF3:Eu3+) were prepared using various concentrations of Eu3+ by conventional solid-state reaction process. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies confirmed the formation of orthorhombic structured KCaF3:Eu3+ phosphors. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) image of the synthesized phosphor exhibits agglomerated particles with irregular shapes. The composition of the synthesized sample was determined by Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) spectrum and elemental mapping showed the homogeneous dispersion of Eu3+ ions into the synthesized KCaF3:Eu3+ phosphor. The emiss

Lyoluminescence, thermoluminescence and mechanoluminescence studies in γ-ray irradiated Dy3+ activated potassium chloride phosphor for accidental radiation dosimetry.

The lyoluminescence (LL), thermoluminescence (TL) and mechanoluminescence (ML) of γ-ray-irradiated coloured powder of KCl:Dy (0.05-0.5 mol%) phosphors are reported in this paper. To understand the mechanism of LL and ML, the LL and ML spectra are compared with TL studies. The variation of intensity of respective luminescence with different γ-ray doses and with different concentrations of Dy3+ ion doped in KCl is found to be similar in nature. The intensities differ from each other, but their nature is found to be similar with γ-ray exposures. The ML glow peak intensity is linear up to high 1 k

Chemi- and Bioluminescence of Cyclic Peroxides.

Bioluminescence is a phenomenon that has fascinated mankind for centuries. Today the phenomenon and its sibling, chemiluminescence, have impacted society with a number of useful applications in fields like analytical chemistry and medicine, just to mention two. In this review, a molecular-orbital perspective is adopted to explain the chemistry behind chemiexcitation in both chemi- and bioluminescence. First, the uncatalyzed thermal dissociation of 1,2-dioxetane is presented and analyzed to explain, for example, the preference for triplet excited product states and increased yield with larger n

Surface passivation of CdS/Zn2SiO4 nanocomposites prepared by a wet chemical route.

Highly luminescent CdS/Zn2SiO4 nanocrystals were prepared by a wet chemical method. The effect of surface passivation was observed in photoluminescence measurements of CdS nanocrystals embedded in colloidal nanocrystallite or amorphous Zn2SiO4 matrix. The resultant luminescent emission of as-prepared CdS/Zn2SiO4 nanocomposite thin films displays two distinct components. One is attributed to the band-edge emission and the other is due to the surface defects. The effect of aging on CdS/Zn2SiO4 nanocomposite thin films has been investigated, showing the active role of Zn2SiO4 matrix in modifying

Qualitative and Quantitative Luminescence Detection of 2,6-Dipicolinic Acid and Levofloxacin Based on a High-Nuclearity Eu(III) Nanomolecular Sensor.

Rapid and accurate testing of 2,6-dipicolinic acid (DPA) and levofloxacin (LFX) has been attracting much attention due to the fact that the former is an important biomarker of anthrax spores and the latter is a third-generation fluoroquinolone drug and has been recognized as an important environmental pollutant. Herein, we report the preparation of a 13-metal Eu(III) nanomolecular sensor (molecular sizes: 2.0 × 2.4 × 3.2 nm) bearing a new flexible Schiff base ligand for luminescence testing of DPA and LFX with high selectivity and sensitivity. Chemiluminescence-based Assays for Detection of Nitric Oxide and its Derivatives from Autoxidation and Nitrosated Compounds.

Nitric oxide (NO) activity in vivo is the combined results of its direct effects, the action of its derivatives generated from NO autoxidation, and the effects of nitrosated compounds. Measuring NO metabolites is essential to studying NO activity both at vascular levels and in other tissues, especially in the experimental settings where exogenous NO is administered. Ozone-based chemiluminescence assays allow precise measurements of NO and NO metabolites in both fluids (including plasma, tissue homogenates, cell cultures) and gas mixtures (e.g., exhaled breath). NO reacts with ozone to generate

Oxygels: Tunable Phosphorescent Hydrogels for Cherenkov-Excited Luminescence Imaging (CELI) of Oxygen.

We present a family of phosphorescent hydrogels, termed Oxygels, for local deep-tissue oxygen sensing by Cherenkov-excited luminescence imaging (CELI). Oxygels comprise dendritic phosphorescent probes covalently bound within a polyethyleneglycol (PEG) matrix held together by an optically neutral dendritic cross-linker. Covalent attachment of the phosphorescent probe within the matrix prevents its leaching from the gel. Changing the size/generation of the dendrimer surrounding the phosphorescent center enables tuning of Oxygel sensitivity, while varying the ratio between the probe and neutral c

Phenol-Formaldehyde Resin for Optical-Chemical Temperature Sensing.

The application of phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin as an optical temperature sensor is investigated. Recent developments in optical luminescent sensors allow for global measurements to be made over the surface of a test article, extending beyond conventional point measurements. Global temperature distributions are particularly helpful when validating computational models or when mapping temperature over complex geometries, and can be used to calculate surface heat flux values. Temperature-sensitive paint (TSP) is a novel chemical approach to obtaining these global temperature measurements, but

Dual-sensitized luminescent Eu(III) dosimeter for the selective detection of inorganic phosphates via a ligand displacement mechanism.

Phosphates play pivotal roles in numerous critical biological processes. They encompass crucial biomolecules, such as phosphorylated amino acids, nucleotide phosphates, phosphoesters, phosphorylated proteins, and phospholipids, which utilize inorganic phosphates (Pi) during their biosynthesis. Dysregulation of the phosphate levels has been implicated in various chronic and acute renal diseases. Therefore, the precise detection and quantification of phosphates hold paramount importance for disease diagnosis, drug development, and physiological assessment. Luminescence properties of Tb3+ doped Sr2SnO4 green phosphor in UV/VUV regions.

Polycrystalline Sr2SnO4 phosphors doped with Tb(3+) were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction method. Materials were characterized by powder XRD and EDS techniques. The luminescence properties of these materials were investigated under UV and VUV excitation. Upon excitation at 272 nm, phosphors exhibited intense emissions at 492 and 543 nm due to (5)D4 → (7)F6 and (5)D4 → (7)F5 transitions of Tb(3+) ions, respectively. Materials also exhibited strong emissions from these transitions under VUV excitation at 147, 173 and 230 nm. Quantitative analysis of the spectra indicated probable ap

Reaction Mechanism of Nitrogen Compounds in Gaseous Ethylene Followed by Catalytic Combustion-Chemiluminescence.

Herein, a practical method for the determination of various organic and inorganic nitrogen (N) compounds in gaseous ethylene was established via the catalytic combustion-chemiluminescence technique. First, the regularity of equal N mass/molar response for N compounds was summarized by evaluating the conversion behavior of different speciation (bipyridine, acetonitrile, NO, NO2, NH3, N2O). Then, based on the assumption that N response is unaffected by speciation, the actual N mass in gaseous samples was accurately calculated using the Van der Waals equation (to correct gas mass), and the theore

Multi-emissive metal nanoclusters: luminescence origin, tailoring strategies, and biomedical applications.

Multicolor (multi-emissive) luminescent materials are attracting increasing attention because, compared with single-emission systems, they can deliver two or more emission bands under the same or different excitation conditions, enabling ratiometric readouts that suppress environmental and instrumental interference and improve quantitative reliability in complex bioenvironments. Ligand-protected metal nanoclusters (MNCs), consisting of several to hundreds of metal atoms, provide a particularly powerful single-component platform because their ultrasmall, molecule-like electronic structures and

Small-Molecule Interaction-Driven Luminol-Artemisinin Chemiluminescent Probe for Highly Sensitive Determination of Alkaline Phosphatase.

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is a pivotal enzyme in diverse physiological processes, and its activity serves as an essential biomarker in clinical diagnostics and biomedical research. The development of reliable and highly sensitive assays for monitoring ALP is therefore of great importance. Herein, we present a luminol-artemisinin (ART) chemiluminescence (CL) platform for the ultrasensitive determination of ALP activity. The assay relies on ALP-catalyzed hydrolysis of ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (AA2P) to produce ascorbic acid (AA), which efficiently quenches luminol-ART CL. Systematic optimizati

Turn-On Terbium(III) Photoluminescence Enables Sensing of Methyl Salicylate by a Biomimetic Airborne Messenger Mechanism.

A low cost, portable optical sensing platform enables rapid and sensitive detection of methyl salicylate (MeSal) in unprocessed samples. The sensing assay is based on a strong photoluminogenic response when MeSal forms a complex with a terbium cation (Tb3+) in aqueous buffer. The assay employs an airtight three-well sensing chamber that allows the volatile MeSal to spontaneously diffuse out of a sample well and partition into a neighboring test well where the intense green Tb-photoluminescence is detected by the naked eye or a cell phone camera. This MeSal vapor diffusion process mimics the bi

Chemiluminescence assay for Listeria monocytogenes based on Cu/Co/Ni ternary nanocatalyst coupled with penicillin as generic capturing agent.

Bacterial pathogen control is important in seafood production. In this study, a Cu/Co/Ni ternary nanoalloy (Cu/Co/Ni TNA) was synthesized using the oleylamine reducing method. It was found that Cu/Co/Ni TNA greatly enhanced the chemiluminescence (CL) signal of the hydroxylamine-O-sulfonic acid (HOSA)-luminol system. The CL properties of Cu/Co/Ni TNA were investigated systemically. The possible CL mechanism also was intensively investigated. Based on the enhanced CL phenomenon of Cu/Co/Ni TNA, a Cu/Co/Ni TNA, penicillin, and anti-L. monocytogenes (Listeria monocytogenes) antibody-based sandwich
