Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome with ipsilateral herniation of hyperinflated hyperlucent lung.

Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome is characterised by unilateral hyperlucency on chest radiograph with small or normal-sized lung on the affected side and compensatory hyperinflation of opposite lung. Hyperinflation of the affected lung is a very rarely reported entity. An adult female patient, who presented with exertional breathlessness and diagnosed to have hypoplastic left pulmonary artery with hyperlucent, hyperinflated and herniated left lung is described.

[Diagnostic considerations in unilateral hyperlucency of the lung (Swyer-James-MacLeod Syndrome)].

Swyer-James-MacLeod Syndrome (SJMS) is considered to be a relatively uncommon and complex disease characterized by roentgenographic hyperlucency of one lung, lobe, or part of a lobe, due the pulmonary vascular structure and alveolar overdistension. It is sometimes associated with bronchiectasis. This syndrome seems to be an acquired disease that develops after viral bronchiolitis and/or viral pneumonia in early childhood. Microscopically, there is evidence of patchy bronchitis and bronchiolitis.SJMS is usually asymptomatic and discovered accidentally by chest radiography in a child with respir

Patent ductus arteriosus. Its occurrence with unequal pulmonary vascularity and hyperlucent left lung.

Twenty-four of 230 patients with patent ductus arteriosus had hypovascularity and hyperlucency in the left lung on preoperative chest roentgenograms. Two of the 24 patients died shortly after operation, and one was unavailable for follow-up. During the postoperative course (mean, three years), roentgenograms of eight of the remaining 21 patients showed persistent, unequal pulmonary vascularity and hyperlucent left lung, with no evidence of air trapping, and two patients had diminished volume of the hyperlucent left lung compared with that of the right lung.

Unilateral Hyperlucent Lung in Adulthood: A Case Report of Swyer-James-Macleod Syndrome.

Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome (SJMS) or Bret syndrome presents as unilateral hyperlucent lung, an uncommon pulmonary condition. The accurate diagnosis of SJMS requires high-resolution CT (HRCT), as conventional chest radiographs may underestimate this condition. We present a case of SJMS in a 54-year-old male who was managed with bronchodilators and intravenous antibiotics. This case report underscores the rarity of SJMS in adulthood, with only a limited number of cases reported globally so far. Comprehensive use of HRCT is crucial for precise diagnosis, and early intervention with appropriate

A unilateral hyperlucent lung - Swyer-James syndrome: A case report and literature review.

Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome (SJMS) is a rare etiology of a unilateral hyperlucent hemithorax but an important one, which should be considered in any individual with such findings. Presentation usually occurs in adulthood with an asymptomatic history in many cases or with a history of childhood infections. Clinically, symptomatic patients may present with productive cough, dyspnea on exertion, hemoptysis, decreased exercise tolerance and recurrent pulmonary infections. Many individuals are asymptomatic only requiring conservative management. However, some patients may require surgical interven

[The differential diagnosis of the unilateral by hyperlucent lung. Two case reports (author's transl)].

The "unilateral hyperlucent lung" is a roentgenologic diagnosis based on an increased radiolucency of one lung. Aetiology and pathogenesis of this clinical syndrome are discussed together with two own case reports about a 9-year-old girl and a 3-month old boy. Anamnesis, bronchography, scintigraphy and angiocardiography in the girl revealed a Swyer-James syndrome, where typically only one lung is damaged by obliterating bronchiolitis. In the patient the pulmonary changes developed subsequently to a measles-pneumonia, possibly enhanced by an additional pollinosis. The 3-month old infant had a l

Unilateral Hyperlucent Lung Syndrome (Swyer-James-Macleod Syndrome) Managed by Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery.

We present a case of a 51-year-old woman whose lung volume reduction surgery for left-sided Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was converted to total pneumonectomy as a result of fragility of the diseased left lung. The patient was discharged on room air in a significantly improved condition. Only a few cases of this rare disease have been reported where an older patient underwent pneumonectomy. When video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery bullectomy is not a viable option, total pneumonectomy can be safely performed and can lead to significant improvement in sym

Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome as a rare cause of unilateral hyperlucent lung: Three case reports.

RATIONALE: Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome (SJMS) is a rare lung disorder characterized by unilateral hyperlucent lungs which arises as a complication of bronchiolitis obliterans. It is typically diagnosed during childhood, although some patients may only be diagnosed in adulthood, often as an incidental finding, but others due to recurrent chest infections. PATIENT CONCERNS: Three patients were referred to our institution with complaints of dyspnea on exertion, chronic productive cough, and recurrent pulmonary infections. Two of them had a history of lower respiratory tract infections during ch

Usefulness of combination of pulmonary ventilation and perfusion scintigraphy on the diagnosis of children with unilateral hyperlucent lung.

OBJECTIVES: Unilateral hyperlucent lung on chest radiograph is uncommon in children. It is often found incidentally and always refers to Swyer-James syndrome, with decrease in pulmonary vascularity and air trapping during expiration. However, it may occasionally mimic other serious lung diseases such as pulmonary hypoplasia/aplasia, defect of pulmonary artery, and other primary pulmonary disorders. In this study, we hypothesized that there would be characteristic patterns in pulmonary ventilation and perfusion scintigraphy (V/Q scan) in children with unilateral hyperlucency on chest film, whic

A Case of Unilateral Hyperlucency of the Lung: a Rare Adult Occurrence of Swyer-James-MacLeod Syndrome.

Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome is a rare pulmonary disorder that exhibits unilateral hyperlucency of a part of or the entire lung and because it is usually asimptomatic the diagnostic of this illness is discovered accidentally after a chest X-ray. Although the cause of this disorder is not completely understood, most authors believe that this is due to late sequela of infectious bronchiolitis that occurs during childhood. The symptoms presented by the individuals are often scarce at the moment of diagnostic, but a history of recurrent episodes of pulmonary infection accompanied by dyspnea, hemop

Unilateral hyperlucent lung in a child caused by a foreign body identified with v/q scintigraphy.

A 5-year-old girl presented with episodes of coughing, inspiratory stridor, and occasionally squeaking breath sounds. There was no history of a foreign body aspiration. Initially, she was diagnosed with allergic asthma. However, signs and symptoms continued despite a trial of inhaled corticosteroids. A chest radiograph showed a hyperlucent right lung, mainly in the upper lobe, with decreased vascular markings compatible with Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome, or foreign body aspiration. V/Q imaging showed markedly diminished right lung ventilation and perfusion, especially in the upper lobe, with a

Utility of ventilation and perfusion scan in the diagnosis of young military recruits with an incidental finding of hyperlucent lung.

Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome (SJMS) is considered to be a relatively uncommon disease presenting with unilateral hyperlucent lung due to hypoplasia of a pulmonary artery and bronchiectasis of the affected lung. In this report, we describe the ventilation-perfusion (V/Q) scan findings of nine male recruits (aged 20-29 years, mean 24.4+/-2.96 years) with SJMS in whom the diagnosis was first established in adulthood. V/Q scan findings of all patients were compared with those on planar radiographs, pulmonary function studies, high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and digital subtraction angio

Swyer-James-MacLeod Syndrome: A Rare Cause of Unilateral Hyperlucent Lung in a Two-Year-Old Male Child.

Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome (SJMS) is an uncommon post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans-related pulmonary disorder characterized by a unilateral hyperlucent lung with associated hypovascularity on chest radiography and CT, and markedly reduced perfusion on ventilation-perfusion scintigraphy. Although typically identified in older children or adolescents due to its insidious progression, diagnosis in early childhood remains rare and diagnostically challenging. This report describes a two-year-old male child with recurrent lower respiratory tract infections who was ultimately diagnosed with

An incidental image of a patient with chest pain after fall from a tree: Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome?

Unilateral hyperlucent lung was firstly described by Swyer and James 1950s. After that, some patients with same disease were detected by Macleod . Then this syndrome was named as Swyer- James-Macleod syndrome (SJMS), and this syndrome includes a smaller or normal sized unilateral hyperlucent lung. The diagnosis of SJMS includes a detailed evaluation and the exclusion of other reasons of unilateral hypertranslucency. In literature, small groups of patients with this syndrome have been described. This paper reports a 45-year-old male presented to our emergency department with chest pain after fa

Intralobar bronchopulmonary sequestration: evidence of air trapping shown by dynamic xenon-133 SPECT.

Dynamic single photon emission computed tomography with xenon-133 gas in a 29-year-old male patient showed xenon-133 retention within an intralobar bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS) with a focal hyperlucent lung area on CT. Left lower lobectomy showed no fistulous connection between the anomalous and normal bronchial trees, but non-contiguous, incompletely developed visceral pleura between the sequestration and the adjacent normally ventilated lung. These features strongly support the role of intralobar collateral air drift and air trapping in producing secondary changes of a focal hyperluc
