Usefulness of sodium chloride as a nondiffusible indicator in the measurement of extravascular lung thermal volume in dogs.

The authors examined the usefulness of sodium chloride as a nondiffusible indicator during the first passage through dogs' lungs, before and after increased-permeability pulmonary oedema produced by an intravenous injection of alloxan. With an injection of a mixture of ice-cold 3 per cent sodium chloride and indocyanine green dye (a nondiffusible reference indicator), the authors simultaneously recorded three dilution curves from the aortic root: dye dilution, thermal and blood electrical conductivity dilution curves in six dogs. The mean transit time of sodium chloride in the conductivity dil

Prenatal Prognosis of Omphalocele Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging Measurement of Fetal Lung Volumes.

BACKGROUND: Omphalocele is a congenital midline abdominal wall defect resulting in herniation of viscera into a membrane-covered sac. Pulmonary complications, including pulmonary hypoplasia, pulmonary hypertension, and prolonged respiratory support are a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVE(S): This study aimed to assess the role of fetal MRI-derived lung volumes and omphalocele defect size as clinical tools to prognosticate postnatal pulmonary morbidity and neonatal mortality in those with a prenatally diagnosed omphalocele (PDO). STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospecti

The open circuit nitrogen washout technique for measuring the lung volume in infants: methodological aspects.

BACKGROUND: Lung volume measurement by nitrogen washout is widely used in infants, though a lack of accuracy and changes of calibration over time have been reported. The potential sources of error were explored in order to increase the accuracy and reliability of the technique. METHODS: A commercial system for nitrogen washout and a 0.5 litre calibrating syringe as a lung model were used to perform over 2000 in vitro washouts, including simulated rapid breathing, shallow breathing, periodic breathing, sighs, and brief apnoeas. A constant 10 l/min bias flow of oxygen and extended equipment war

Comparison of prenatal lung volume measurements associated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) utilization and mortality in congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal imaging plays a central role in risk stratification for congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). We sought to identify the most accurate predictor of mortality and ECMO utilization at early and late gestation timepoints amongst the various lung volume measurements: lung-to-head ratio (LHR), observed-to-expected (O/E) LHR, O/E total fetal lung volume (TFLV) and percent predicted lung volume (PPLV). METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of patients with isolated left and right-sided CDH at our fetal care center from 2012 to 2023. Early gestation imaging was performed at initial

Absolute and lung volume-normalized deep learning-derived pulmonary vascular measures in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: distinct clinical associations and the role of lung volume in prognosis.

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) has an unpredictable course and poor outcome, and lung function-based risk stratification remains incomplete. Whether absolute and lung volume-normalized deep learning-derived CT pulmonary vascular measurements show distinct associations with disease severity and mortality in patients with IPF remains unclear. METHODS: In this dual-center retrospective study, 118 adults with newly diagnosed IPF, including 57 from the Italian cohort and 61 from the French cohort, underwent baseline chest CT analyzed with a deep learning-based quantitative pipel

Cross-sectional changes in lung volume measured by electrical impedance tomography are representative for the whole lung in ventilated preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: Electrical impedance tomography measures lung volume in a cross-sectional slice of the lung. Whether these cross-sectional volume changes are representative of the whole lung has only been investigated in adults, showing conflicting results. This study aimed to compare cross-sectional and whole lung volume changes using electrical impedance tomography and respiratory inductive plethysmography. DESIGN: A prospective, single-center, observational, nonrandomized study. SETTING: The study was conducted in a neonatal ICU in the Netherlands. PATIENTS: High-frequency ventilated preterm

Comparison of lung volume measurements by antero-posterior chest X-ray and the SF6 washout technique in mechanically ventilated infants.

While anterior/posterior chest x-rays (CXR) are routinely performed to estimate lung volume (LV) and adjust ventilator settings, the precise measurement of LV requires additional sophistication. In 31 infants ventilated because of surfactant deficiency (n=23), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (n=7), or pulmonary hypoplasia (n=1) with either intermittent positive pressure (n=18) or high frequency oscillation (n=13) (gestational age 23-39 weeks (median 26 weeks); birthweight 550-2780 g (median 840 g); age at measurement 1-91 days (median 6 days); weight at study time (WST) 675-3000 g (median 938 g)),

Fetal lung volumes measured by MRI predict pulmonary morbidity among infants with giant omphaloceles.

OBJECTIVE: Giant omphaloceles (GO) have associated pulmonary hypoplasia and respiratory complications. Total lung volumes (TLV) on fetal MRI can prognosticate congenital diaphragmatic hernia outcomes; however, its applicability to GO is unknown. We hypothesize that late gestation TLV and observed-to-expected TLV (O/E TLV) on fetal MRI correlate with postnatal pulmonary morbidity in GO. METHOD: A single-institution retrospective review of GO evaluated between 2012 and 2022 was performed. Fetal MRI TLV between 32 and 36 weeks' gestation and O/E TLV throughout gestation were calculated and corre

Magnetic resonance assessment of fetal lung maturity: comparison between signal intensity and volume measurement.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the associations between gestational age (GA) and lung-to-liver signal intensity ratio (LLSIR) and fetal lung volume (FLV) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Moreover, we evaluated the reproducibility of these measurements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: LLSIR and FLV were measured using single-shot fast spin-echo MRI in 88 consecutive fetuses. The Spearman test was used to assess the relationships between (1) LLSIR and GA, and (2) FLV and GA in 81 fetuses without lung abnormalities. Intra- and inter-observer reliabilities were assessed using intra-class correlation coeffic

Three-dimensional sonographic measurement of contralateral lung volume in fetuses with isolated congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

PURPOSE: To use 3-dimensional sonography (3DUS) to measure contralateral lung volume and evaluate the potential of this measurement to predict neonatal outcome in isolated congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). METHODS: Between January 2002 and December 2004, the contralateral lung volumes of 39 fetuses with isolated CDH were measured via 3DUS using rotational multiplanar imaging. The observed/expected contralateral fetal lung volume ratios (o/e-ContFLVR) were compared with the lung/head ratio (LHR), observed/expected total fetal lung volume ratio (o/e-TotFLVR), and postnatal outcome. Effects of ventilation and pleural effusion on measurements of airway thermal volume and blood flow in dog lungs.

We studied the effects of ventilation and pleural effusion on measurements of airway thermal volume (ATV) and pulmonary blood flow (PBF) by using the airway gas thermometry method of V. B. Serikov, M. S. Rumm, K. Kambara, M. I. Bootomo, A. R. Osmack, and N. C. Staub (J. Appl. Physiol. 72: 944-953, 1992) in 39 anesthetized dogs with or without lung edema or pleural effusion. To examine the differential effects of increased-pressure and increased-permeability lung edema on accuracy and sensitivity of ATV and PBF, two models of lung edema were induced by intravenous infusion of a Dextran 70 solut

Repetitive MR measurements of lung volume in fetuses with congenital diaphragmatic hernia: individual development of pulmonary hypoplasia during pregnancy and calculation of weekly lung growth rates.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate individual changes in fetal lung volume (FLV) in fetuses with isolated congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) and to calculate weekly growth rates of the FLV using serial MR examinations during pregnancy. METHODS: MR-FLV was measured in 89 fetuses with CDH. All fetuses received two MRIs. A mean weekly growth rate of the FLV was determined for each fetus and compared with the growth rate of healthy fetuses. RESULTS: Mean observed-to-expected MR-FLV (o/e MR-FLV) measured at the first MRI was 33.3 ± 12.2% and 29.5 ± 10.9% at the second MRI. In 61% of all fetuses (54/89)

Volume of rat lungs measured throughout the respiratory cycle using 19F NMR of the inert gas SF6.

The lung volumes of mechanically ventilated rats were measured over the course of the respiratory cycle using the NMR signal strength from inhaled sulfurhexafluoride. Rats with elastase-induced emphysema showed larger lung volumes and slower exhalation than control rats. For humans the technique should be able to provide lung volume measurements at least 20 times a second.

Measurement of resection volume using computed tomography 3D modeling in lung cancer patients and survival analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The prognostic significance of the volumetric extent of lung resection in nonsmall cell lung cancer remains uncertain. Three-dimensional computed tomography allows quantitative assessment of resected lung parenchyma, but the relationship between resection volume ratios and oncologic outcomes has not been clearly established. The aim in this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of three-dimensional computed tomography-derived resection volume ratios for disease-free survival after surgery for nonsmall cell lung cancer. Can lung volumes and capacities be used as an outcome measure for phrenic nerve recovery after cardiac surgeries?

Phrenic nerve is the main nerve drive to the diaphragm and its injury is a well-known complication following cardiac surgeries. It results in diaphragmatic dysfunction with reduction in lung volumes and capacities. This study aimed to evaluate the objectivity of lung volumes and capacities as an outcome measure for the prognosis of phrenic nerve recovery after cardiac surgeries. In this prospective experimental study, patients were recruited from Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Department, Educational-Hospital of College of Medicine, Cairo University. They were 11 patients with right phrenic nerve inj

Leveraging Central Sleep Apnea Events to Validate the Measurement of Lung Volume Changes Using Thoracic Bio-Impedance.

Sleep disordered breathing can cause serious health issues, yet current diagnostic methods are cumbersome and prone to error. Thoracic electrical bio-impedance (BioZ) is a promising alternative, but it remains unclear whether the measured BioZ variations reflect lung volume changes. We leverage linear reductions in lung volume during central sleep apnea (CSA) events to assess whether BioZ measurements capture changes in lungs. BioZ signals from 92 sleep studies were analyzed using linear regression to quantify their slope and linearity (R2). Group differences were assessed, and a linear mixed-
