There is little quantitative information about the amount of fibrosis in lymphomas. The aim of the present study was to investigate the amount of fibrosis in lymphomas and to highlight the relationship between fibrosis and mast cells, the key players of fibrosis. Lymphomas of the head and neck arise in lymph nodes and extranodal areas as Waldeyer ring, nasal cavity, thyroid gland and salivary glands. Of the cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) diagnosed in children and adolescents, 10% comprise a diverse mixture of unusual B-cell or T-cell disease, some types of which are more commonly seen in adults. Understanding of these rare types of NHL comes from small pediatric case series or the adult literature. Some rare pediatric NHL is similar to adult NHL, but other types have different molecular and cytogenetic characteristics. It is important to improve understanding and treatment of these rare pediatric NHLs through international collaborative efforts.

T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) are uncommon malignancies. The current WHO/EORTC classification recognizes 9 distinct clinicopathologic peripheral T-cell NHLs. The mediastinum is commonly involved with disease in patients with Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. The involvement may be permeative, or individual groups of nodes may be enlarged. The parietal nodes of the mediastinum may also be abnormal with either type. Precise mapping of all disease is important when radiation therapy is to be a major component of treatment planning. Detection of relapse following mantle irradiation is frequently dependent on having a new comparative baseline after the distortions of mediastinal contours consequent to radiation treatment have stabilized.

This paper is a review of the pathology of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. The various classifications proposed as alternatives to the Rappaport classification are briefly reviewed. The light microscopic morphology of the various sub-types are described, mentioning where possible the derivation of the tumour cell type as delineated by enzyme and immunological cell marker studies. The natural history and salient clinicopathological aspects of the disease entities are also described.

In this review, we report the main advances of the last years in the four most common lymphomas in France, namely Hodgkin lymphoma, large cell diffuse B lymphoma, follicular lymphoma and mantle cell lymphoma.
