The validities of 7 MMPI-2 (Butcher, Graham, Ben-Porath, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 2001) measures of general maladjustment were compared using a composite criterion measure based on self-reported symptom severity and clinicians' ratings of symptom severity and level of functioning. Participants were 274 male and 425 female clients at a community mental health center and 105 male and 247 female clients at a university psychological clinic. The present article examines the utility of the MMPI-2 for the subtyping of social phobia (SP). Cluster analysis was conducted on the MMPI-2 profiles of 109 patients with SP. Clusters were compared on demographic and clinical variables prior to treatment, as well as following completion of cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT). Three distinct clusters emerged. The present study concerned the evaluation of personality traits associated with sexual dysfunctions. The MMPI was used as a psychodiagnostic tool in male subjects (N = 37) with erectile disorder or premature ejaculation. The results tend to support some clinical observations based upon the cognitive-behavioral approach and some neurophysiological data.

A sample of MMPI research published between 1970 and 1981 was analyzed to yield reliability and stability estimates for the MMPI scales. In fundamental agreement with previous research, moderately high levels of reliability and stability were found for all scales. Reliability values ranged from .71 to .84; stability values ranged from .63 to .86. These findings are based on thousands of adult subjects from college, psychiatric, medical, alcohol or drug rehabilitation, and prison populations. The prediction of violent behavior can be an important aspect in the diagnostic work-up of a patient. Can the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) be of any help in predicting dangerous behavior? DSM-III disorders in which violent behavior has a high probability to occur, and the corresponding MMPI profiles are discussed.

The authors compared the MMPI scores of 29 inpatients diagnosed by other authors as having hysterical personality and 21 outpatients diagnosed by the authors as having Briquet's syndrome. The two groups of patients differed significantly in age, on the MMPI lie scale, and on the MMPI hypochondriasis scale but not on any of the other MMPI scales. The authors discuss the implications of these findings for further defining the differences and similarities between hysterical personality and Briquet's syndrome.

A retrospective study examined predictors of MMPI responses for a sample of 66 post-acute traumatic brain-injured patients. Years of education was found to be correlated to four clinical scales and two validity scales with the more educated subjects reporting less psychopathological symptoms. Utilized the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) with IQ scores and selected biographic data to identify drop-outs in a Veterans Administration vocational rehabilitation program. The effects of race and the validity of Megargee, Cook, and Mendelsohn's (1967) Overcontrolled-Hostility (O-H) Scale were examined using 412 male forensic psychiatric inpatients. Regression analysis using the total study sample indicated that the only predictor of O-H score was race, with Black patients scoring higher than White patients. A number of previous studies have delineated Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) characteristics in patients with multiple personality. To test the accuracy of the MMPI in identifying such patients, the authors blindly rated 63 MMPIs as being either multiple personality or not. Scores on the MMPI-2 anger-content scale were correlated with those on Spielberger's anger expression scale, Zelin, et al.'s anger self-report scale, and the Cook and Medley hostility scale. Subjects were 32 men and 33 women in college. As expected, the anger-content scale correlated significantly with measures of anger awareness, anger expression (anger out versus anger in), and negatively with anger control. There was also a significant correlation with measures of hostility (projection of anger) for men.

A sample of 80 male offenders charged with premeditated murder were divided into five personality types using MMPI scores. A hierarchical clustering procedure was used with a subsequent internal cross-validation analysis using a second sample of 80 premeditated murderers. This study examines assessment issues concerning transsexualism through the use of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI).
