A device to help a child communicate was requested by an educator. The child cannot read, write, or speak but can recognize symbols and use those symbols to communicate. While this communication works, it doesn't work well in situations where another person does not know how to use the symbols to communicate. For this reason, a device was requested that could display images to a child and play a phrase when that image was chosen. To meet this need an MP3 player like device was constructed. The device stores images and Mpeg-Layer III (MP3) sound clips on a replaceable Secure Digital (SD) card.

The objective of the current study was to evaluate the predictive role of the olivocochlear efferent reflex strength in temporary hearing deterioration in young adults exposed to music. This was based on the fact that a noise-protective role of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) system was observed in animals and that efferent suppression (ES) measured using contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS) of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) is capable of exploring the MOC system. Knowing an individual's susceptibility to cochlear damage after noise exposure would enhance preventive strategies for noise-induc

Most people with psychosis and schizophrenia experience auditory hallucinations, particularly the hearing of voices. A common cause of frustration and alienation for consumers is the lack of understanding by therapists, family members and caregivers, who find it difficult to relate to the consumers' experiences. The purpose of this study is to examine and evaluate whether students' participation in a simulated auditory hallucination will increase their understanding and knowledge about psychosis and auditory hallucinations. The design method consisted of a lecture on psychosis and schizophreni

BACKGROUND: In the physical therapy setting, physical therapists (PTs) often prescribe exercises for their clients to perform at home. However, it is difficult for PTs to obtain information about their clients' compliance with the prescribed exercises, the quality of performance and symptom magnitude. We present an iPod-based system for capturing this information from individuals with vestibular hypofunction while they perform gaze stabilization exercises at home.
METHOD: The system's accuracy for measurement of rotational velocity against an independent motion tracker was validated. Then a s

PURPOSE: Snoring patients seeking medical assistance represent a wide range of clinical and sleep study findings from nonsleepy nonapneic snoring to severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. The prevalence of snoring is high and it significantly impacts quality of life. Its objective diagnosis usually requires a sleep study. We developed a system to analyze snoring sounds with a Moving Picture Experts Group Layer-3 Audio (MP3) recorder device and present its value in the screening of snoring.
METHODS: We recorded snoring sounds during in-lab polysomnography (PSG) in 200 consecutive patients re

The aim of this study was to determine if simulation aided by media technology contributes towards an increase in knowledge, empathy, and a change in attitudes in regards to auditory hallucinations for nursing students. A convenience sample of 60 second-year undergraduate nursing students from an Australian university was invited to be part of the study. A pre-post-test design was used, with data analysed using a paired samples t-test to identify pre- and post-changes on nursing students' scores on knowledge of auditory hallucinations. Nine of the 11 questions reported statistically-significan

Postural instability is common in individuals with Huntington's disease (HD), yet little is known about control of the trunk during static and dynamic activities. We compared the trunk motion of 41 individuals with HD and 36 controls at thoracic and pelvic levels during sitting, standing, and walking using wearable iPod sensors. We also examined the ability of individuals with HD to respond to an auditory cue to modify trunk position when the pelvis moved >8° in sagittal or frontal planes during sitting using custom software. We found that amplitude of thoracic and pelvic trunk movements was s

Students with developmental disabilities and limited or no functional speech often use speech-generating devices. While the speech-output function of such devices is considered to have potential advantages, it is unclear whether the length of synthetic speech output influences augmented communication and natural speech production. To this end, we describe a two-phase study involving an adolescent with Klinefelter syndrome. In Phase 1, the frequency of augmented requests and natural speech were compared under three speech-output conditions (no-output, short-output, and long-output). In Phase 2,

BACKGROUND: Instrumentation of the spine depends on choosing the correct insertion angles to implant screws. Although modern image guidance facilitates precise instrumentation of the spine, the equipment is costly and availability is limited. Although most surgeons use lateral fluoroscopy to guide instrumentation in the sagittal plane, the lateromedial angulation is often chosen by estimation. To overcome the associated uncertainty, iPod touch-based applications for measuring angles can be used to assist with screw implantation.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of the iPod touch to adjust instr
