Searching beneath the shelf in macaque monkeys: evidence for a gravity bias or a foraging bias?

The reasons underpinning search biases in 2 species of macaque monkeys (Macaca mulatta and Macaca arctoides) were explored over the course of 3 experiments requiring monkeys to search for a hidden food reward. The results reveal that monkeys are adept at exploiting perceptual cues to locate a food reward but are unable to use physical constraints such as solidity as cues to the reward's location. Monkeys prefer to search for a food reward beneath a solid shelf, not because they have an expectation that the reward should be there, but rather because, in the absence of usable cues, this bias eme

Intrageneric taxonomic distinction based on morphological variation in the macaque (Macaca) skeleton.

Taxonomic classification is important for understanding the natural world, yet current methods for species assessment often focus on craniodental morphology rather than the entire skeleton. Moreover, it is currently unknown how much variation could, or should, exist intragenerically. Here, we tested whether taxonomy can be accurately predicted based on patterns of morphological variation in macaques (H1 ) and whether postcranial bones reflect subgeneric macaque taxonomy similarly, or better, than the cranium (H2 ). Data included 3D scans of cranial and postcranial bones for eight macaque speci

The effects of female-male friendships on male postcopulatory levels of oxytocin and vasopressin, and sperm parameters in Macacaarctoides.

Male and female stump-tailed macaques (Macaca arctoides) form close relationships akin to human friendships. Oxytocin and vasopressin modulate these and other social relationships and reproductive behavior and physiology in various mammal species. Besides the behavioral effects of oxytocin, this hormone plays an essential role in the ejaculatory process, favoring sperm transport upward the female reproductive tract. Therefore, we investigated the influence of friendships on postcopulatory serum levels of oxytocin and vasopressin in the stump-tailed macaque (Macaca arctoides). In addition, we s

Testing Sex-Biased Admixture Origin of Macaque Species Using Autosomal and X-Chromosomal Genomic Sequences.

The role of sex-specific demography in hybridization and admixture of genetically diverged species and populations is essential to understand the origins of the genomic diversity of sexually reproducing organisms. In order to infer how sex-linked loci have been differentiated undergoing frequent hybridization and admixture, we examined 17 whole-genome sequences of seven species representing the genus Macaca, which shows frequent inter-specific hybridization and predominantly female philopatry. We found that hybridization and admixture were prevalent within these species. For three cases of sug

Predictive structure-activity relationships in a series of pyranoquinoline derivatives. A new primate model for the identification of antiallergic activity.

A new primate model has been developed for the evaluation of antiallergic agents. Compounds are tested for their ability to inhibit anti-IgE induced histamine release from the bronchoalveolar mast cells lavaged from the lungs of Macaca arctoides infected with the parasite Ascaris suum. A number of 6-substituted pyranoquinoline derivatives have been evaluated and the activities were subjected to Hansch analysis. A highly significant correlation with lipophilicity (pi) and Hammett sigma p values was obtained. The relationship was used to predict further compounds for synthesis giving rise to new

Studies on the vasoocclusive crisis of sickle cell disease. III. In vitro and in vivo effect of the pyrimido-pyrimidine derivative, RA-233: studies on its mechanism of action.

Red cell deformability was found to be impaired in SS- and SC-genotype and to a lesser extent SA-genotype red blood cells as compared with those of AA-genotype. RA-233 in vitro improved deformability according to a bell-shaped dose-response curve. RA-233 also prevented experimental vasoocclusive crisis in Macaca arctoides. Deoxygenation of SS-genotype red cells resulted in sickle shape transformation, ATP depletion, potassium efflux, and attachment of hemoglobin molecules to the membrane. These changes were prevented by RA-233. Suspending SS-genotype red blood cells in potassium rich tris-buff

Intercellular junctions between fibroblasts in connective tissues of the eye of macaque monkeys. A thin section and freeze fracture analysis.

Thin-section electron microscopy and freeze fracture were used in the analysis of the intercellular junctions between fibroblasts in connective tissues of the eye of Macaca mulatta, M. fascicularis, and M. arctoides. Fibroblasts located in the subconjunctival loose connective tissue, anterior sclera, scleral spur, iris stroma, ciliary body stroma, and posterior choroid were jointed by three kinds of junctions. Gap junctions were of different sizes and frequently composed of a small number of connexons organized in polygonal aggregates or linear arrays. Tight junctions were represented by isola

Ocular blood flow in phakic and aphakic monkey eyes.

Alterations in regional ocular blood flow produced by topical epinephrine were studied in phakic and aphakic eyes of Macaca arctoides using the radioactive microsphere technique. Three isotopes were used to make sequential blood flow measurements just prior to topical epinephrine administration, 1 hr later and 3 hr later. Significant reductions of flow were found in the iris, ciliary body, and optic nerve head of both phakic and aphakic groups. Choroidal and posterior optic nerve flow decreased significantly in aphakic eyes only. Decreases in flow were flow decreased significantly in aphakic e

Scanning electron microscopy of monkey secretory- and transitional-stage enamel organ cells.

This scanning electron microscope (SEM) study of secretory- and transitional-stage enamel organ cells of the permanent dentition of Macaca mulatta and Macaca arctoides was undertaken because the topography of these cells in primates has not been described in the literature. Comparison of our results with murine enamel organ morphology reported previously revealed not only many similarities, but also some significant differences. Tooth buds of the permanent dentition were routinely prepared for SEM. Murine secretory-stage ameloblasts have been described to be 65-70 microns long, with smooth lat

An animal model of myopia.

Myopia develops in macaque monkeys when their lids are surgically fused at birth and kept closed for one year. This experimental refractive error has many features in common with human myopia: It is caused by progressive axial elongation of the eye, is often accompanied by fundus changes, and can only be induced before eye growth has been completed. Myopia does not develop in animals raised in the dark; thus, it is triggered by an alteration of the visual input and is presumably mediated by the nervous system. In Macaca arctoides, atropine administration prevents abnormal eye elongation, and t

An animal model of visual loss from orbital hemorrhage.

Intraorbital hemorrhage may arise spontaneously or following orbital or periorbital surgery or trauma and may be associated with visual loss or impairment. This project was designed to evaluate the ophthalmic effects and underlying mechanism(s) associated with visual impairment secondary to intraorbital hemorrhage. An experimental surgical procedure was developed to simulate intraorbital hemorrhage. A reversible state of unilateral visual loss secondary to acutely increased intraorbital volume was induced and maintained under general anesthesia for either 90, 120, or 180 min duration in nine a

Computed tomography examination of the face of Macaca anderssoni (Early Pleistocene, Henan, northern China): Implications for the biogeographic history of Asian macaques.

Macaca anderssoni, a fossil macaque from the Early Pleistocene of northern China, has attracted much attention from researchers in terms of reconstructing the biogeographic history of Asian macaques, while its phylogenetic position remains debatable. In the present study, we evaluated patterns of variation in external and internal craniofacial morphologies among four phylogenetic groups of extant macaques (the fascicularis, sinica, silenus, and sylvanus groups), using computed tomography and multivariate analyses. We also reassessed the holotype of M. anderssoni, a partial cranium preserving t

Effects of morphine on colonic myoelectric and motor activity in subhuman primates.

We investigated the effects of numerous doses of morphine on colonic myoelectric and motor activity in monkeys. In each of four monkeys (Macaca arctoides), combined strain gauge transducers and bipolar electrodes were chronically implanted at four defined sites in the colon and recordings were made for 3 h in fasted, unanesthetized animals before and after intravenous administration of morphine sulfate (10-1,000 micrograms/kg). The basal fasting pattern of colonic motility was characterized by random contractions, nonmigrating clusters of contractions, and migrating individual contractions. Mo

Ascaris-induced bronchoconstriction in primates experimentally infected with Ascaris suum ova.

Bronchial provocation with Ascaris allergen evoked bronchoconstriction in home-bred Macaca arctoides monkeys sensitized by experimental infection with embryonated Ascaris suum ova. Inhalation of Ascaris allergen by aerosol prior to infection produced no changes in lung function. In infected animals total lung resistance (RL) increased and dynamic lung compliance (Cdyn) decreased following Ascaris inhalation. The changes in lung function reached a peak, 2-5 min after allergen inhalation, lasted for approximately 30 min and were associated with increases in arterial plasma histamine levels and d

The effects of topical diazoxide on hair follicular growth and physiology of the stumptailed macaque.

Diazoxide, an anti-hypertensive agent, has diverse pharmacologic effects; hypertrichosis, hyperglycemia associated with suppression of insulin release, and elevation of serum levels of androgens. Taking advantage of the hypertrichotic side effects of diazoxide, we examined the effect of topical application of the drug on hair regrowth in the bald frontal scalp of stumptailed macaques (Macaca arctoides); we also monitored systemic side effects. Using 7 adult stumptails, we applied diazoxide (5% solution in a vehicle) topically on the bald frontal scalp, once a day, 5 days per week. Two of seven

Characterization of primate bronchoalveolar mast cells. II. Inhibition of histamine, LTC4, and PGD2 release from primate bronchoalveolar mast cells and a comparison with rat peritoneal mast cells.

As described in the preceding companion paper, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) of the primate Macaca arctoides infected with the nematode Ascaris suum yields a population of cells containing a high proportion of mast cells (21%). Nedocromil sodium, a new drug undergoing clinical evaluation for the treatment of reversible obstructive airways disease, inhibited the release of histamine, LTC4, and PGD2 from these cells challenged with antigen (with IC30 values of 2.1 X 10(-6) M, 2.3 X 10(-6) M, and 1.9 X 10(-6) M, respectively) and with anti-human IgE (IC30 values of 4.7 X 10(-6) M, 1.3 X 10(-6) M,

Characterization of primate bronchoalveolar mast cells. I. IgE-dependent release of histamine, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins.

Large numbers of functional mast cells were obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) of Macaca arctoides monkeys that had been infected with the nematode Ascaris suum. These lavage cells, of which 21% were mast cells, released histamine, LTC4, and PGD2 in a concentration-dependent fashion when challenged with ascaris antigen or antibody to human IgE. However, there was no release of histamine when these cells were challenged with compound 48/80. The amount of mediator released was highly dependent on the sensitivity of the cells to immunologic challenge, but was generally in the range of 2 to

[Does Alzheimer's disease exist in all primates? Alzheimer pathology in non-human primates and its pathophysiological implications (II)].

INTRODUCTION: In the ageing process there are some species of non-human primates which can show some of the defining characteristics of the Alzheimer's disease (AD) of man, both in neuropathological changes and cognitive-behavioural symptoms. The study of these species is of prime importance to understand AD and develop therapies to combat this neurodegenerative disease. DEVELOPMENT: In this second part of the study, these AD features are discussed in the most important non-experimental AD models (Mouse Lemur -Microcebus murinus, Caribbean vervet -Chlorocebus aethiops, and the Rhesus and stum

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis in nonhuman primates. I. Studies on the relationship of immunoregulation and disease activity.

We investigated the relationship of immunoregulation to disease activity in a nonhuman primate model of pigeon breeder's disease. Two Macaca arctoides monkeys developed classical symptoms of hypersensitivity pneumonitis after sensitization and prolonged bronchial challenge, whereas 2 other monkeys remained asymptomatic after in vivo challenge. There were no differences in the percentages of T cells, B cells, monocytes, or FC gamma-bearing T cells between symptomatic and asymptomatic animals. Nonetheless, we found a population of concanavalin A-induced, pigeon serum- (PS) induced, and spontaneo

Initiation of high dose gonadotrophin-releasing hormone antagonist treatment during the late follicular phase in the macaque abolishes luteal function irrespective of effects upon the luteinizing hormone surge.

The determination of the efficacy of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonists in blocking the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge and luteal function is important for our understanding of the control of the menstrual cycle and for clinical application. GnRH antagonists have failed to block the LH surge reliably in the non-human primate. The aim of the study was to utilize high dose GnRH antagonist treatment administered during the late follicular phase of the menstrual cycle to block the pre-ovulatory LH surge. It was postulated that the LH surge would be prevented in all animals, but if
