Rising atmospheric CO₂ levels require innovative strategies to increase carbon sequestration. Bacteria-algae interactions, as pivotal yet underexplored drivers of marine and freshwater carbon sinks, involve multiple mechanisms that amplify CO₂ fixation and long-term storage. This review systematically describes the synergistic effects of bacteria-algae consortia spanning both microalgae (e.g., Chlorella vulgaris and Phaeodactylum tricornutum) and macroalgae (e.g., Macrocystis and Laminaria) on carbon sequestration. These effects include (1) molecular-level regulation (e.g., signal transduction

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Kelp forests provide myriad ecosystem services to human society, many of which are being eroded by climate-driven extreme events, before they have been measured. Here, we assess how dive tourism in giant kelp forests (Macrocystis pyrifera) has been impacted by marine heatwaves over three decades in southeast Tasmania.
METHODS: Dive trip logs and business records were compiled from 1991-2021 from the Tasman Peninsula, Tasmania. Dives sites were georeferenced and matched to the dominant habitat (e.g. cave, wreck, sponge garden, kelp forest) for each dive site. The distribut

Kelp forests are essential marine ecosystems providing high-density habitats, nurseries, and food for countless species, including fish, invertebrates, and mammals. An increasing number of rafting thalli have been observed recently. This phenomenon may represent a natural dispersal strategy of kelp populations, or alternatively, it may be associated with rising ocean temperatures and the increased frequency and intensity of storm events. In the latter case, one can assume that thalli would be degrading during rafting and be associated with declining physiology. With this rationale in mind, we

Toxoplasma gondii is a land-derived parasite that infects humans and marine mammals. Infections are a significant cause of mortality for endangered southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis), but the transmission mechanism is poorly understood. Otter exposure to T. gondii has been linked to the consumption of marine turban snails in kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) forests. It is unknown how turban snails acquire oocysts, as snails scrape food particles attached to surfaces, whereas T. gondii oocysts enter kelp beds as suspended particles via runoff. We hypothesized that waterborne T. gondii oocys

We took advantage of regional differences in environmental forcing and consumer abundance to examine the relative importance of nutrient availability (bottom-up), grazing pressure (top-down), and storm waves (disturbance) in determining the standing biomass and net primary production (NPP) of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera in central and southern California. Using a nine-year data set collected from 17 sites we show that, despite high densities of sea urchin grazers and prolonged periods of low nutrient availability in southern California, NPP by giant kelp was twice that of central Calif

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent articular chronic disease. Although, to date there is no cure for OA. Fucoidans, one of the main therapeutic components of brown algae, have emerged as promising molecules in OA treatment. However, the variability between fucoidans makes difficult the pursuit of the most suitable candidate to target specific pathological processes. By an in vitro experimental approach in chondrocytes and fibroblast-like synoviocytes, we observed that chemical composition of fucoidan, and specifically the phlorotannin content and the ratio sulfate:fucose, seems critical

Fucoidan is a polysaccharide bioactive compound, mainly from brown algae, characterized by multiple biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, anticancer, antioxidant, antiviral, and cardioprotective properties. In addition, growing scientific evidence supports its epigenetic potential and ability to modulate autophagic mechanisms, two crucial aspects for the treatment and prevention of chronic diseases, such as cancer, inflammation, and aging. For this reason, Fucoidan is a promising candidate for a wide range of applications, both as a bioactive component of drug deli

Marine resources have tremendous potential for developing high-value biomaterials. The last decade has seen an increasing number of biomaterials that originate from marine organisms. This field is rapidly evolving. Marine biomaterials experience several periods of discovery and development ranging from coralline bone graft to polysaccharide-based biomaterials. The latter are represented by chitin and chitosan, marine-derived collagen, and composites of different organisms of marine origin. The diversity of marine natural products, their properties and applications are discussed thoroughly in t

Fucoidan is a natural derived compound found in different species of brown algae and in some animals, that has gained attention for its anticancer properties. However, the exact mechanism of action is currently unknown. Therefore, this review will address fucoidans structure, the bioavailability, and all known different pathways affected by fucoidan, in order to formulate fucoidans structure and activity in relation to its anti-cancer mechanisms. The general bioactivity of fucoidan is difficult to establish due to factors like species-related structural diversity, growth conditions, and the ex

In the dynamic realm of healthcare, the convergence of engineering and biomedical sciences has emerged as a pivotal frontier. In this review we go into specific areas of innovation, including medical imaging and diagnosis, developments in biomedical sensors, and drug delivery systems. Wearable biosensors, non-wearable biosensors, and biochips, which include gene chips, protein chips, and cell chips, are all included in the scope of the topic that pertains to biomedical sensors. Extensive research is conducted on drug delivery systems, spanning topics such as the integration of computer modelin
