OBJECTIVE: Macrophage migration inhibitory factor is a soluble mediator that helps govern the interaction between cytokines and stress hormones (eg, cortisol). We determined whether maternal macrophage migration inhibitory factor levels predicted subsequent preterm delivery.
STUDY DESIGN: A nested case-control study measuring serum macrophage migration inhibitory factor concentration at 9-23 weeks' gestation in women who ultimately delivered preterm (n = 60) compared with control women who delivered at term (n = 122). We also examined the connection of macrophage migration inhibitory factor w

Glucocorticoid hormones are important anti-inflammatory agents because of their anti-inflammatory and proapoptotic action within the immune system. Their clinical usefulness remains limited however by side effects that result in part from their growth inhibitory action on sensitive target tissues. The protein mediator, macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), is an important regulator of the host immune response and exhibits both glucocorticoid-antagonistic and growth-regulatory properties. MIF has been shown to contribute significantly to the development of immunopathology in several mod

Psoriasis is a persistent cutaneous disease characterized by skin inflammation and infiltration of immunocytes such as lymphocytes and monocytes/macrophages, concomitant with abnormal epidermal hyperproliferation. We previously showed that the serum level of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and its production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells of patients with psoriasis were closely correlated with the severity of clinical symptoms; however, the precise role of MIF in psoriatic epidermis remains to be clarified. The current study was carried out to elucidate the possible involve

Portopulmonary hypertension (POPH) is a poorly understood complication of liver disease associated with significant morbidity and mortality. We sought to identify novel biomarkers of POPH disease presence and severity. We performed a prospective, multicenter, case-control study involving patients with liver disease undergoing right heart catheterization. POPH cases were defined as a mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) ≥25 mmHg and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) >240 dynes˙s˙cm-5. Plasma samples were collected from the systemic and pulmonary circulation, and antibody microarray was use

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pleiotropic cytokine and has been implicated in inflammatory diseases. However, little is known about the regulation of MIF in adipose tissue and its impact on wound healing. The aim of this study was to investigate MIF expression in inflamed adipose and determine its role in inflammatory cell recruitment and wound healing. Adipose tissue was harvested from subcutaneous adipose tissue layers of 24 healthy subjects and from adipose tissue adjacent to acutely inflamed wounds of 21 patients undergoing wound debridement. MIF protein and mRNA expres

MIF is an inflammatory cytokine but is hepatoprotective in models of hepatotoxin-induced liver fibrosis. Hepatic fibrosis can also develop from metabolic liver disease, such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NASH). We investigated the role of MIF in high-fat or methionine- and choline-deficient diet mouse models of NASH. Mif(-/-) mice showed elevated liver triglyceride levels (WT, 53±14 mg/g liver; Mif(-/-), 103±7 mg/g liver; P<0.05) and a 2-3-fold increased expression of lipogenic genes. Increased fatty degeneration in the livers of Mif(-/-) mice was associated with increased hepatic infla

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pleiotropic proinflammatory cytokine produced by many mammalian tissues including skin. It is also found in many invertebrate parasites of mammals including ticks and may function to aid the parasite to evade the innate and adaptive immune responses in the host. In this study, the cDNA for a MIF gene was sequenced from Sarcoptes scabiei, the scabies mite, using RT-PCR and RACE molecular techniques. The resulting nucleotide sequence had a length of 405 base pairs and the putative amino acid sequences for the mite and tick (Dermacentor variabilis

UNLABELLED: The role of the cytokine, macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), and its receptor, CD74, was assessed in autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). Two MIF promoter polymorphisms, a functional -794 CATT5-8 microsatellite repeat (rs5844572) and a -173 G/C single-nucleotide polymorphism (rs755622), were analyzed in DNA samples from over 500 patients with AIH, PBC, and controls. We found a higher frequency of the proinflammatory and high-expression -794 CATT7 allele in AIH, compared to PBC, whereas lower frequency was found in PBC, compared to both AIH and

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a critical immunoregulatory pluripotent cytokine. It has been re-evaluated as a proinflammatory cytokine, pituitary hormone and glucocorticoid-induced immunoregulatory protein. MIF exists in human epidermis, especially in the basal layer and also is expressed constitutively by monocytes/macrophages, T cells, B cells, endocrine, and epithelial cells. In the field of dermatology, MIF is believed to be a detrimental factor in inflammatory dermatological diseases including atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis, vitiligo, pemphigus vulgaris, bullous pemph

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), an important pro-inflammatory cytokine, is over-expressed in plaques of psoriasis and increased levels are found in the sera of patients with psoriasis. Promoter polymorphisms of the MIF gene are associated with increased production of MIF and have been found to confer increased risk of susceptibility to chronic inflammatory diseases. We investigated whether there is an association between promoter polymorphisms of the MIF gene and chronic plaque psoriasis. Two hundred and twenty-eight UK caucasian patients with chronic plaque psoriasis, and a cont

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pleiotropic cytokine that exerts dual-faced, context-dependent roles in physiological and pathological processes. While it maintains tissue homeostasis and facilitates repair under normal conditions, MIF acts as a 'double-edged sword' following tissue injury. As a primary initiator of early inflammatory responses, MIF regulates immune cell activation, oxidative stress, and downstream inflammatory cascades. The present review focuses on the molecular mechanisms and therapeutic potential of MIF signaling in three critical inflammation-related con

Background Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a result of the interplay between genetic and environmental risk factors. A unique cytokine macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), expressed by inflammatory cells, acts via a cluster of differentiation 74 (CD74) and a cluster of differentiation 44 (CD44) receptors, leading to the recruitment of mononuclear neutrophils and lymphocytes. This cascade results in exaggerated inflammation and atherosclerosis. MIF's distinctive characteristics and functions make it an essential target for achieving therapeutic atherosclerosis regression, setting it a

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is an inflammatory mediator in several diseases, including tuberculosis (TB). However, the role of MIF in each stage of TB remains to be further elucidated. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the differences in plasma MIF protein levels in patients with active pulmonary TB, positive and negative interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) household contacts (HHCs), and healthy controls (HCs). Plasma MIF concentration was significantly higher in patients with active-new pulmonary tuberculosis (ATB) and HHCs compared with HCs (mean ± standard deviation: 17.3

INTRODUCTION: Marek's disease virus (MDV) can cause malignant T-cell lymphomas and immunosuppression in chickens. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) not only plays a critical role in inhibiting T-cell responses, but also contributes to multiple aspects of tumour progression. The aim of this study was to reveal the potential role of MIF in the pathogenesis of MDV infection.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: MIF gene expression levels were measured by using real-time PCR. Expression was assayed at different times in chicken embryo fibroblast (CEF) cells and tissue samples of SPF chickens infected

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a key proinflammatory cytokine. Inhibitors of tautomerase activity of MIF are perspective antiinflammatory compounds. Ceruloplasmin, the copper-containing ferroxidase of blood plasma, is a noncompetitive inhibitor of tautomerase activity of MIF in the reaction with p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate. Small-angle X-ray scattering established a model of the complex formed by MIF and ceruloplasmin. Crystallographic analysis of MIF with a modified active site supports the model. The stoichiometry of 3 CP/MIF trimer complex was established using gel filtration.
