Trypanosoma cruzi Genotype I and Toxoplasma gondii Co-infection in a Red-Necked Wallaby.

While the health effects of trypanosomes in Australian mammals in their native range are not fully understood, there is evidence of an impact in those species introduced to other geographical regions. Here we report the pathological and molecular features of concurrent fatal trypanosomiasis and toxoplasmosis in an adult female captive red-necked wallaby (syn. Bennett's wallaby; Macropus rufogriseus) from Bee County, Texas, USA. The animal exhibited no clinical signs prior to sudden death. On necropsy, the main findings were generalized organ congestion and bilateral renal petechiation. Microsc

Molar eruption and identification of the eastern grey kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) at different ages.

To treat dental disorders and estimate age, it is important that veterinarians understand teeth eruption sequence for the animal in question. Few dental images of the eastern grey kangaroo have been published. In the present study, radiographic imagings of 29 kangaroos, ranging in age from 12 months to 10 years 9 months, was used to surveil the replacement of premolars and the eruption of molars. These images revealed eruption patterns in five stages, while the second and third deciduous premolars were shed non-systematically. Furthermore, the third premolars and fourth molars erupted in the m

HYPOALDOSTERONISM IN A MATSCHIE'S TREE KANGAROO (DENDROLAGUS MATSCHIEI).

A 20-yr-old female Matschie's tree kangaroo (Dendrolagus matschiei) was diagnosed with hypoaldosteronism, a rare condition in which the body fails to produce normal amounts of the mineralocorticoid aldosterone. Aldosterone plays a key role in body salt homeostasis, increasing sodium reabsorption and promoting excretion of potassium. Hypoaldosteronism resulted in decreased appetite, lethargy, and weight loss in conjunction with hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, and hypercalcemia in this tree kangaroo. The animal was successfully managed with mineralocorticoid replacement using desoxycorticosterone pi

Calcium carbonate obstructive urolithiasis in a red kangaroo (Macropus rufus).

A 6-yr-old male red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) presented for a history of inappetance, abnormal behavior, and unconfirmed elimination for 6 hr prior to presentation. Based on abdominal ultrasound, abdominocentesis, and cystocentesis, a presumptive diagnosis of urinary tract obstruction with uroabdomen and hydronephrosis was reached. Abdominal radiographs did not assist in reaching an antemortem diagnosis. Postmortem examination confirmed a urinary bladder rupture secondary to urethral obstruction by a single urethrolith. Bilateral hydronephrosis and hydroureter were identified and determined to

Sarcocystis mucosa (Blanchard 1885) Labbé 1889 in unadorned rock wallabies (Petrogale assimilis) and Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus).

Macroscopic cysts of a protozoan parasite were detected in the gastro-intestinal walls of two unadorned rock wallabies (Petrogale assimilis) and 20 Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus). The cysts were located predominantly in the muscularis externa and the submucosa of the forestomach, small intestine and colon and sometimes in the muscularis externa of the oesophagus and caecum. All cysts exhibited similar morphological and ultrastructural characteristics. They were bounded by thick primary cyst walls (containing distinctive bulbous-like protrusions) and were surrounded by collagen fibr

Zoonotic Cryptosporidium and Giardia in marsupials-an update.

Marsupials, inhabiting diverse ecosystems, including urban and peri-urban regions in Australasia and the Americas, intersect with human activities, leading to zoonotic spill-over and anthroponotic spill-back of pathogens, including Cryptosporidium and Giardia. This review assesses the current knowledge on the diversity of Cryptosporidium and Giardia species in marsupials, focusing on the potential zoonotic risks. Cryptosporidium fayeri and C. macropodum are the dominant species in marsupials, while in possums, the host-specific possum genotype dominates. Of these three species/genotypes, only

Imaging Diagnosis: Thoracic radiographic features of toxoplasmosis in a 14-month-old Red Kangaroo (Macropus rufus).

A privately owned 14-month-old intact female red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) was presented for acute onset respiratory distress and lethargy. On presentation, the kangaroo was laterally recumbent, tachypneic, dyspneic, lethargic, and obtunded. Thoracic radiographs revealed a severe diffuse mixed pulmonary pattern (alveolar pattern superimposed on a bronchial pattern) and subjective mild generalized cardiomegaly. Due to the severity of clinical signs and grave prognosis, euthanasia was elected. Postmortem examination was consistent with systemic toxoplasmosis. Histopathology and immunohistochemis

Mortality trends for five species of macropods from a single institution from 1995 to 2016.

Macropods are commonly kept and exhibited species worldwide. Mortality records were reviewed for five species of macropods housed at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo from 1995 to 2016. One hundred sixty-seven deaths occurred including Western grey kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus) (n = 22), Bennett's wallaby (M. rufogriseus) (n = 64), red kangaroo (M. rufus) (n = 56), wallaroo (M. robustus) (n = 9), and Tammar wallaby (M. eugenii) (n = 16). The leading cause of death was trauma, followed by bronchopneumonia for all species. Gastric dilatation was identified as a concern for red kangaroo. Females lived l

Neuronal inclusions resembling Negri bodies in the thalamus of a red kangaroo (Macropus rufus).

Eosinophilic intracytoplasmic neuronal inclusions resembling Negri bodies, but not associated with lyssaviral infection, were detected in the ventrolateral thalamus of a young-adult, male red kangaroo (Macropus rufus). Similar neuronal inclusions, also with a regional distribution in the brain, have been reported as an incidental, possibly age-related finding in other animal species.

Steroid-independent regulation of uterine oxytocin receptors.

The oxytocin receptor is an important contractile-associated protein, up-regulated at term in the myometrium in many mammalian species. We conducted studies in a novel animal model to challenge the general view that gonadal steroids are a major regulatory factor of uterine oxytocin receptors. Female marsupials have separate uteri and, in monovular species such as the tammar wallaby, the conceptus is present in one uterus whereas the contralateral uterus is empty. A marked increase in myometrial oxytocin receptors occurs only in the gravid uterus. Fetectomy experiments demonstrated that local e

Porphyromonas spp., Fusobacterium spp., and Bacteroides spp. dominate microbiota in the course of macropod progressive periodontal disease.

Macropod progressive periodontal disease (MPPD) is a necrotizing, polymicrobial, inflammatory disease commonly diagnosed in captive macropods. MPPD is characterized by gingivitis associated with dental plaque formation, which progresses to periodontitis and then to osteomyelitis of the mandible or maxilla. However, the underlying microbial causes of this disease remain poorly understood. In this study, we collected 27 oral plaque samples and associated clinical records from 22 captive Macropodidae and Potoroidae individuals that were undergoing clinical examination at Adelaide and Monarto Zoos

Sarcoptic Mange in a Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) and Bennett's Wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus).

Sarcoptes scabiei mites and skin lesions consistent with severe sarcoptic mange were identified in a Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) and Bennett's wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus) from Tasmania, Australia. The devil and wallaby both had severe hyperkeratotic skin lesions. All stages of mite development were identified in the devil, suggesting parasite reproduction on the host. The devil was also affected by devil facial tumor disease and several other parasites. This expands the global host range of species susceptible to this panzootic mange disease.

Isolation of Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii (serotype A) and C. magnus from the nasal lining of free-ranging quokkas (Setonix brachyurus).

Cryptococcus species are environmental yeasts, with a worldwide distribution and remarkable environmental adaptation. Although many species do not cause disease, C. neoformans and C. gattii are causative agents of cryptococcosis, a life threatening infection and a significant public health problem worldwide. Infection especially affects immunocompromised animals and humans. In wildlife, cryptococcosis appears to be more prevalent in captive populations. The objective of this study was to assess whether apparently healthy quokkas (Setonix brachyurus) harbor Cryptococcus spp. Using cultural and

Infection of Western Gray Kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus) with Australian Arboviruses Associated with Human Infection.

More than 75 arboviruses (arthropod-borne viruses) have been identified in Australia. While Alfuy virus (ALFV), Barmah Forest virus (BFV), Edge Hill virus (EHV), Kokobera virus (KOKV), Murray Valley encephalitis virus (MVEV), Sindbis virus (SINV), Ross River virus (RRV), Stratford virus (STRV), and West Nile virus strain Kunjin (KUNV) have been associated with human infection, there remains a paucity of data regarding their respective transmission cycles and any potential nonhuman vertebrate hosts. It is likely that these viruses are maintained in zoonotic cycles involving native animals rathe

Urogenital vasculature and local steroid concentrations in the uterine branch of the ovarian vein of the female tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii).

The urogenital vasculature of the tammar comprises 4 major paired arteries and veins: the ovarian, the cranial urogenital, the caudal urogenital and the internal pudendal artery and vein. The ovarian artery and vein and their uterine branches which supply the ovary, oviduct and uterus, ramify extensively. Each anterior urogenital artery and vein supplies the caudal regions of the ipsilateral uterus, lateral and median vagina and cranial parts of the urogenital sinus. The caudal urogenital arteries and veins supply the urogenital sinus and caudal regions of the bladder. The internal pudendal ar

Phylogenetic Inference from Atomized 3D Morphometric Data: A Case Study using Kangaroos.

Reconstructing phylogeny from morphological data remains mired in investigator biases, including subjective inclusion and discretization of phenotypic variation. Geometric morphometrics and multivariate statistical analyses provide an alternative array of tools for studying variation in morphological traits. However, direct analysis of landmark data is often unreliable for phylogeny reconstruction. Morphological variation is typically highly correlated among nearby landmarks and may evolve saltationally between adaptive peaks instead of gradually, thereby violating the assumptions of typical c

Histomorphometric comparison of the gravid and non-gravid uterus at the time of birth in the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii): insights into the embryo-maternal interface.

Context Tammar wallabies have a very short gestation which does not exceed the length of the estrus cycle. Direct contact between embryo and mother is established via a short-lived yolk sac placenta only in the last third of gestation. Therefore, an efficient embryo-maternal interface is required to ensure rapid embryonic growth. However, the morphology of the placenta at the time of birth is not well described in marsupials. Aims To study the morphology of the embryo-maternal interface, to compare the gravid and the non-gravid uterus at the time of birth and to examine the presence of polyplo
