PURPOSE: To report two cases in which cystoid macular edema developed after initiation of topical latanoprost for glaucoma.
METHODS: Case reports. One pseudophakic eye in each of two patients treated with latanoprost for glaucoma developed decreased vision and cystoid macular edema. Latanoprost was discontinued, and the cystoid macular edema was treated with topical corticosteroids and ketorolac.
RESULTS: After discontinuing latanoprost and starting corticosteroids and ketorolac, visual acuity improved from counting fingers to 20/60 in one patient's left eye and from 20/100 to 20/25 in the o

Cystoid macular edema after cataract surgery, with or without intraocular lens implantation, has been reported to develop in more than 50% of patients as detected by fluorescein angiography. It is associated with reduced visual acuity in up to 8% of cases. Analysis of ongoing clinical trials at the Wilmer Institute indicates that clinically significant cystoid macular edema develops in a lower percentage of cases (2% total incidence and 0.3% persistent cystoid macular edema) if the intraocular lens implantation was uncomplicated. The factors associated with cystoid macular edema and the import

An apparently autosomal-dominant macular dystrophy occurred in three pedigrees with the presenting signs of typical cystoid macular edema due to leaking perimacular capillaries. Other striking features were retinal capillary leakage all over the posterior pole of the eye, whitish punctate deposits in the vitreous body, a normal electroretinogram, a subnormal electro-oculogram, and moderate to high hyperopia. In later or more advanced stages the macula developed a central zone of "beaten bronze" atrophy. Strabismus occurred frequently.

PURPOSE: To describe the epidemiology of macular edema (ME) in patients with uveitis.
METHODS: Review of articles listed on PubMed pertaining to uveitic ME.
RESULTS: Reported rates of uveitic ME ranging from 20% to 70%, depending on the ancillary tests used (fundus examination, fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography). Macular edema might develop due to uveitis itself, or occur as an adverse effect of drugs taken for different diseases. It is more frequently observed in adults than in children, in chronic uveitis, and in intermediate uveitis. Males with ankylosing spondylitis a

The occurrence of macular edema, or of intraretinal fluid in general, was largely unknown prior to the invention of the ophthalmoscope. One of the first reports on 'Retinitis in Glycosuria', a disease complex, which today would partly be described as diabetic maculopathy, was published in 1856 by Jaeger. His observations were confirmed less than twenty years later by Nettleship in London, and in 1875 Appolinaire Bouchardat from Paris described fluid and lipid accumulation in the macula which led--in his words--to a glucose induced amblyopia. The first pathophysiological hypotheses of fluid acc

The pathological findings in ten eyes with cystoid macular edema are used to demonstrate typical details, stages and clinical associations. A history of ocular hypotony leads the list of associated conditions. Cyclitis is also very common. Separation of the central cones from the pigment epithelium due to folding of the outer retinal layers is observed and this can be used to explain early central vision loss associated with cystoid macular edema.

Macular edema represents a major cause of visual loss in uveitis and its adequate management is crucial for the maintenance of useful vision in patients with uveitis. Corticosteroid is the first choice for UME treatment.Long term and sustained release implantation is the newest administration for medical therapy. The immunosuppressant such as cyclosporine, methotrexate, azathioprine and mycophenolate mofetil can be used specially for chronic and intractable UME. Moreover, these years, some newly developed biological agents, for example, anti-VEGF, interferon-α, anti-TNF and acetazolamide will

PURPOSE: To differentiate diabetic macular edema (DME) from pseudophakic cystoid macular edema (PCME) based solely on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 134 participants: 49 with PCME, 60 with DME, and 25 with diabetic retinopathy (DR) and ME after cataract surgery. First, two unmasked experts classified the 25 DR patients after cataract surgery as either DME, PCME, or mixed-pattern based on SD-OCT and color-fundus photography. Then all 134 patients were divided into two datasets and graded by two masked readers according to a s

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between subclinical diabetic macular edema (SCME) and the development of central-involved macular edema (CIME) in patients with diabetes mellitus type-2 and mild nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), from 2 populations of different ethnicities.
METHODS: Two hundred and five patients with diabetes mellitus type-2 and mild NPDR with no prior laser or intravitreal treatment were followed for 2 years or until the development of CIME. Ophthalmological examinations, including BCVA, fundus photography with RetmarkerDR analysis, a

This case report describes an unusual course of an impending macular hole (MH) throughout a 72-month follow-up period. A 53-year-old female presented with impending MH associated with epiretinal proliferation (EP) which showed unusual progress including full thickness MH, spontaneous closure, reopening as lamellar MH, and full anatomical closure with EP tissue. After cataract surgery, cystoid spaces occurred involving both EP tissue and neuroretina. Due to full recovery following a single dose of aflibercept, the source of the cystoid spaces was thought to be associated with postoperative infl

We compared the amplitude and implicit times of the a-waves, b-waves, and oscillatory potentials of the focal macular electroretinograms of 30 eyes with aphakic cystoid macular edema and the healthy fellow eyes. Ten affected eyes were characterized by reduced amplitudes of the oscillatory potentials with normal a-wave and b-wave responses (type 1). Nine affected eyes had both reduced amplitudes of the oscillatory potentials and the b-waves (type 2). Ten affected eyes were characterized by reduced amplitude of the oscillatory potentials, the a-waves, and the b-waves (type 3). One eye could not

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major complication of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T1DM and T2DM). Disease progression can result in visual impairment, primarily due to diabetic macular edema (DME) or proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Although several ocular treatments are available for DME, a subset of patients fails to respond, reflecting the multifactorial, complex, and systemic nature of DR. Inflammatory biomarkers can be classified according to different characteristics, including imaging biomarkers-most commonly assessed using optical coherence tomography (OCT)-and mo

OBJECTIVE: To highlight paraproteinemic maculopathy as a potential initial manifestation of multiple myeloma and to emphasize its ability to mimic diabetic macular edema in patients with diabetes.
METHODS: Two diabetic patients presenting with macular edema unresponsive to intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy were evaluated. Detailed ophthalmic examination and fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) were performed, followed by systemic investigations.
RESULTS: Subsequent systemic evaluation led to the diagnosis of multiple myeloma in both patients and with systemic thera

INTRODUCTION: We present a single-eyed case with a previous diagnosis of breast cancer who had intraretinal cystoid changes associated with the systemic administration of ixabepilone in her only seeing eye. To our best knowledge, this is the first reported case describing this phenomenon related to the ixabepilone administration.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 54-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer was examined due to visual deterioration in her only good left eye. The patient had undergone cataract surgery and lens implantation in her right eye following a childhood accident, but subsequentl

Systemic sclerosis is a chronic, autoimmune, multisystem disease characterized by vascular dysfunction, chronic inflammation and widespread fibrosis. Although vascular involvement commonly manifests in the skin, it can also affect other organs, including the eyes. The characteristic vascular alteration is an obliterative fibroproliferative vasculopathy leading to hypoxia and tissue ischemia. We present a case of bilateral macular edema in a patient diagnosed with systemic sclerosis, as a consequence of retinal and choroidal vascular changes.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the clinical features of diabetic macular edema (DME) in eyes with pachychoroid phenotypes using multimodal retinal imaging.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 210 eyes from 210 DME patients and analyzed the clinical and imaging parameters, including visual acuity, central macular thickness (CMT), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and neural retina layer thickness (NRT). The DME eyes were divided into two groups: group 1 (80 eyes with submacular detachment [SMD]) and group 2 (130 eyes without SMD). The clinical and imaging parameters of 285 eyes from 285 diabet

Diabetic macular edema (DME) is the most common cause of vision loss in patients with diabetic retinopathy with an increasing prevalence tied to the global epidemic in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Its pathophysiology starts with decreased retinal oxygen tension that manifests as retinal capillary hyperpermeability and increased intravascular pressure mediated by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) upregulation and retinal vascular autoregulation, respectively. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) is the cornerstone of clinical assessment of DME. The foundation of treatment

Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a highly prevalent cause of vision loss and has a remarkable impact on public health, and on the quality of life of diabetic patients. Even though laser photocoagulation has been the standard of care for decades, a substantial group of patients are unresponsive and fail to improve after laser treatment. Recently, new pharmacological approaches based on the use of intravitreal drugs, such as corticosteroids and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor, have revolutionized the treatment of DME. The use of intravitreal drugs is supported by the improvement in visual
