Perfusion magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy of cerebral gliomas showing imperceptible contrast enhancement on conventional magnetic resonance imaging.

The purpose of the present paper was to evaluate the utility of perfusion MRI in cerebral gliomas showing imperceptible contrast enhancement on conventional MRI, and to evaluate the relationships of perfusion MRI and magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopic results in these tumours. Twenty-two patients with histopathologically proven cerebral gliomas and showing insignificant contrast enhancement on conventional MR were included in the present study. All patients underwent perfusion MRI and MR spectroscopy on a 1.5-T MR system. Significant differences of the relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Cholangiopancreatography of the Pancreas in Small Animals.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) have emerged as non-invasive diagnostic techniques for the diagnosis of pancreatic and pancreatic duct disorders in humans. The number of studies focused on MR and MRCP for pancreatic disease in small animals is very limited. MR has been described for the evaluation of insulinoma in dogs and to investigate pancreatitis in cats. The studies were based on a standard protocol with T2 weighted (w) fast recovery fast spin-echo (FRFSE) with and without fat suppression, T1w FSE pre-contrast and T1w FSE post-contrast with and with

Magnetic resonance imaging therapy. Intraoperative MR imaging.

The field of image-guided neurosurgery has developed under the premise that integrating the enhanced discrimination powers of CT scan and MR imaging into the operating room improves the accuracy, safety and precision of neurosurgery, and expand the realm of surgically treatable lesions. Through cooperation between General Electric Corporation and the Brigham and Women's Hospital, and open-configuration MR suite was designed and implemented to attain these goals through real-time, intraoperative MR imaging in a true surgical suite. This system allows intraoperative acquisition of MR images with

Icteric-type hepatoma: magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance cholangiographic features.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the imaging features of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance cholangiography (MRC) of icteric-type hepatoma and correlated these with the findings of endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC), percutaneous cholangiography, and surgery. METHODS: Thirteen patients with viral hepatitis complicated by cirrhosis of the liver and obstructive jaundice underwent MRC and dynamic MRI. Five patients received percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography and drainage; one of these patients also underwent resection of the left hepatic lobe. Another patient receive

Cardiothoracic magnetic resonance flow imaging.

Multidimensional blood flow imaging with magnetic resonance has rapidly evolved over the last decade. The technique, often referred to as 4-dimensional (4D) flow, can now reliably image the heart and principal vessels of the chest in ≤15 minutes. In addition to dynamic 3D flow visualization, a range of unique quantitative hemodynamic markers can be calculated from 4D flow data. In this review article, we describe some of the more promising of these hemodynamic markers, including pulse wave velocity, pressure, turbulent kinetic energy, wall shear stress, and flow eccentricity. Magnetic resonance imaging in dentistry.

MR imaging has found a place in the imaging sciences. These images are unique in that no ionizing radiation is used, the same tissues may or may not have different appearances with different machine settings, a unique set of terms is used to describe the findings in the images, and these findings can be analyzed with the view of obtaining more diagnostic information not readily available with any other imaging modality. Cases have been presented to help demonstrate differences in T1-weighted and T2-weighted sequences as well as the value of contrast material. Additionally, plain film and CT vi

Magnetic resonance imaging in pachydermoperiostosis.

Pachydermoperiostosis is a rare inherited disorder that is manifest clinically by digital clubbing, extremity enlargement, painful and swollen joints, hypertrophic skin changes, and periosteal bone formation. This report illustrates the skeletal findings that may be seen with long-standing disease as evaluated with conventional radiography and with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, with emphasis on the MR appearance of periosteal reaction in this disorder. There are features that suggest pachydermoperiostosis may represent a generalized enthesopathy.

Magnetic resonance imaging of neurocysticercosis.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) by the porcine tapeworm, common in developing countries with poor sanitation. The disease has been noted increasingly in nonendemic areas because of travel and immigration from affected regions. The magnetic resonance (MR) appearance can be characteristic, with single or multiple cysts and varying degrees of wall enhancement and surrounding edema, depending on the stage of the life cycle of the larva and its associated cyst.

Gadolinium magnetic resonance imaging dacryocystography.

A 1:100 solution of 48% gadopentolate in liquid tear solution was used in magnetic resonance dacryocystography to image the canaliculi, nasolacrimal sac, and nasolacrimal duct. It was administered as an eyedrop, one drop every minute for five minutes, immediately before scanning in six normal and five abnormal nasolacrimal outflow systems. In cases of nasolacrimal obstruction, the dilute gadolinium solution was injected through the canaliculus immediately before scanning. A three-inch surface coil enhanced the detail of soft-tissue structures such as the canaliculi and lacrimal sac. In the eva

[Imaging of atherosclerosis: magnetic resonance].

Atherosclerosis is the disease with the most important social impact in terms of cost and human life. Its study in the prevention and cure of its consequences needs integration using many imaging modalities, and magnetic resonance presents advantages due to its particular characteristics. The Authors make an overview of its indications and potential applications in the assessment of atherosclerotic disease. In vitro studies have demonstrated that it is possible to evaluate the normal and abnormal components of vessel walls by means of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as well as fatty depositio

[Whole body magnetic resonance imaging].

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has a growing number of applications in the whole body area. Its role cannot be properly considered without comparing it to the diagnostic capabilities and availability of sonography and the high standard of newest-generation CT. MRI is an accepted diagnostic modality for diseases involving the pelvis and the musculoskeletal system. It is equal or superior to other modalities in examination of the neck, the cardiovascular system, the upper abdomen and the retroperitoneum.

Magnetic resonance imaging: lumbosacral lipoma.

To evaluate the clinical efficacy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of lumbosacral lipomas, the magnetic resonance images of nine patients were reviewed. T1- and T2-weighted spin echo sequences were used with a 0.5-T magnetic resonance system. The tethered or low-positioned conus medullaris, the lipoma itself, the lipoma--cord interface, the subarachnoid space, and hydromyelia were clearly disclosed. The nerve rootlets were not as clear. These results indicate the possible discontinuance of myelography and metrizamide computed tomography (CT) cisternography for such imaging. The diagnostic m

Magnetic resonance imaging of meningiomas.

Twenty-eight patients with 32 meningiomas were studied on a 0.5-T superconductive magnetic resonance (MR) imager. This common, benign treatable tumor was more clearly seen on computed tomography (CT) than MRI in 53% of cases. This is a result of poor contrast between the tumor and the adjacent brain on all spin-echo and inversion-recovery pulse sequences. Those sequences that provide the greatest anatomic detail were best for identifying this low-contrast lesion. Inversion-recovery scans in particular demonstrated the tumor as a discrete hypointense mass (relative to nearby white matter) with

Pelvimetry by magnetic resonance imaging.

Sagittal and transverse multisection magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 10 patients was used to obtain dimensions of the maternal pelvis, determine fetal position, and examine maternal and fetal soft tissues. Dimensions were measured with less than 1% instrument error, and bony landmarks were readily identified. MR pelvimetry is an accurate technique for obtaining traditional pelvimetric measurements without exposure to ionizing radiation. These techniques can be further used to investigate soft-tissue dystocia and obstructed labor.

Aortic dissection: magnetic resonance imaging.

Fifteen patients with suspected or known aortic dissection were imaged with magnetic resonance (MR). Thirteen of these patients were eventually shown to have dissection. In most instances the diagnosis was established by aortography and/or computed tomography (CT) prior to the MR study. Surgical proof (6/13) and/or aortographic proof (10/13) were available in 11/13 patients with aortic dissection. MR demonstrated the intimal flap and determined whether the dissection was type A or type B. In addition, MR: differentiated between the true and false lumens; determined the origins of the celiac, s
