ObjectiveCognitive reserve (CR) is the capacity to adapt to (future) brain damage without any or only minimal clinical symptoms. The underlying neuroplastic mechanisms remain unclear. Electrocorticography (ECOG), electroencephalography (EEG), and magnetoencephalography (MEG) may help elucidate the brain mechanisms underlying CR, as CR is thought to be related to efficient utilization of remaining brain resources. The purpose of this systematic review is to collect, evaluate, and synthesize the findings on neural correlates of CR estimates using ECOG, EEG, and MEG.MethodWe examined articles tha

A 82-year-old male experiencing headaches, dementia, urinary incontinence and gait instability was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) and underwent a resting state magnetoencephalography (MEG) examination. MEG data were recorded in a magnetically shielded room with a whole-head 122 channel biomagnetometer. Following MEG, a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt was placed in his head and greatly improved his symptomatology. Spontaneous MEG recordings revealed lower magnetic fields at frontal and frontotemporal regions compared to central and posterior regions. This finding correlated

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a noninvasive, silent, and totally passive neurophysiological imaging method with excellent temporal resolution (∼1 ms) and good spatial precision (∼3-5 mm). In a typical experiment, MEG data are acquired as healthy controls or patients with neurologic or psychiatric disorders perform a specific cognitive task, or receive sensory stimulation. The resulting data are generally analyzed using standard electrophysiological methods, coupled with advanced image reconstruction algorithms. To date, the total number of MEG instruments and associated users is significantl

Monetary gains and losses in gambling situations are associated with a distinct electroencephalographic signature: in the event-related potentials (ERPs), a mediofrontal feedback-related negativity (FRN) is seen for losses, whereas oscillatory activity shows a burst of in the θ-range for losses and in the β-range for gains. We used whole-head magnetoencephalography to pinpoint the magnetic counterparts of these effects in young healthy adults and explore their evolution over time. On each trial, participants bet on one of two visually presented numbers (25 or 5) by button-press. Both numbers c

It has been suggested that schizophrenic patients fail to develop left-hemisphere dominance because of an early disturbance in neuronal development. This hypothesis has been supported by some post-mortem. CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, while other in-vivo studies have given contradicting results. We used 122-channel whole-head magnetoencephalography and MRI to locate the sources of auditory evoked responses in 19 schizophrenic patients and in 20 healthy controls. Auditory evoked responses were detected in all subjects. The left-right hemisphere asymmetry of cerebral sources f

The brain-generated currents that produce potentials measured by the electroencephalogram also produce magnetic fields which can be measured by the magnetoencephalogram (MEG), N 20 compatible evoked field after median nerve stimulation is known to be generated in primary sensory cortex. Using MEG with 37 channel SQUIDs, a current dipole is back traced which corresponds to the sensory cortex. When the dipole is projected onto the MRI of the same patient, the primary sensory cortex is precisely identified in the MRI images. These data were used as the key images for navigator enabling a surgeon

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) records weak magnetic fields outside the human head and thereby provides millisecond-accurate information about neuronal currents supporting human brain function. MEG and electroencephalography (EEG) are closely related complementary methods and should be interpreted together whenever possible. This manuscript covers the basic physical and physiological principles of MEG and discusses the main aspects of state-of-the-art MEG data analysis. We provide guidelines for best practices of patient preparation, stimulus presentation, MEG data collection and analysis, as we

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a neuroimaging technique that has excellent temporal as well as good spatial resolution for measuring neural activity and has been extensively employed in cognitive neuroscience. However, MEG has only been more recently applied to investigations of brain networks and biomarkers in psychiatry. Besides providing new insights into the pathophysiology of major psychiatry syndromes, especially in schizophrenia, a major objective of current research is the identification of biomarkers that could inform early intervention and novel treatments. This chapter will provide

Traditional magnetoencephalographic (MEG) brain imaging scanners consist of a rigid sensor array surrounding the head; this means that they are maximally sensitive to superficial brain structures. New technology based on optical pumping means that we can now consider more flexible and creative sensor placement. Here we explored the magnetic fields generated by a model of the human hippocampus not only across scalp but also at the roof of the mouth. We found that simulated hippocampal sources gave rise to dipolar field patterns with one scalp surface field extremum at the temporal lobe and a co

OBJECT: Resective surgery is increasingly used in the management of pediatric epilepsy. Frequently, invasive monitoring with subdural electrodes is required to adequately map the epileptogenic focus. The risks of invasive monitoring include the need for 2 operations, infection, and CSF leak. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and outcomes of resective epilepsy surgery guided by magnetoencephalography (MEG) in children who would have otherwise been candidates for electrode implantation.
METHODS: The authors reviewed the records of patients undergoing resective epilepsy surge

RATIONALE: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is useful to localize epileptic foci in epilepsy as MEG has higher spatio-temporal resolution than conventional diagnostic imaging studies; positron emission computed tomography, single photon emission computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODS: We use 204-channel helmet-shaped MEG with a sampling rate of 600 Hz. A single dipole method calculates equivalent current dipoles to localize epileptic sources. The equivalent current dipoles are superimposed onto MRI as magnetic source imaging (MSI). Ictal MEG data are analyzed using time

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) depends on proper identification of the seizure onset zone (SOZ) and differentiation of mesial, temporolimbic seizure onsets from temporal neocortical seizure onsets. Noninvasive source imaging using electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) can provide accurate information on interictal spike localization; however, EEG and MEG have low sensitivity for epileptiform activity restricted to deep temporolimbic structures. Moreover, in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE), interictal spikes frequently

To characterize Parkinson's disease, abnormal phase-amplitude coupling is assessed in the cortico-basal circuit using invasive recordings. It is unknown whether the same phenomenon might be found in regions other than the cortico-basal ganglia circuit. We hypothesized that using magnetoencephalography to assess phase-amplitude coupling in the whole brain can characterize Parkinson's disease. We recorded resting-state magnetoencephalographic signals in patients with Parkinson's disease and in healthy age- and sex-matched participants. We compared whole-brain signals from the two groups, evaluat

OBJECTIVE: Adolescence is a critical period of neurodevelopment and concussion, also known as mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), during this stage of life can have long lasting consequences. Concussion in paediatric populations presents with heterogenous symptoms and this study aimed to use magnetoencephalography (MEG)-a powerful imaging tool-to characterize alterations in brain electrophysiology in adolescents with concussion history.
METHODS: We analyzed resting state MEG data from a cross-sectional sample of adolescents with a history of concussion (n = 27) against neurotypical controls (

BACKGROUND: Brain functional connectivity (FC) analyses based on magneto/electroencephalography (M/EEG) signals have yet to exploit the intrinsic high-dimensional information. Typically, these analyses are constrained to regions of interest to avoid the curse of dimensionality, with the latter leading to conservative hypothesis testing.
NEW METHOD: We removed such constraint by estimating high-dimensional source-based M/EEG-FC using cluster-permutation statistic (CPS) and demonstrated the feasibility of this approach by identifying resting-state changes in mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a p

BACKGROUND: Understanding the neural mechanisms underlying migraine and other primary headache disorders is critical for the development of long-term cures. Magnetoencephalography (MEG), an imaging modality that measures neuronal currents and cortical excitability with high temporal and superior spatial resolution, has been increasingly used in neurological research. Initial MEG studies showed promise in directly recording cortical spreading depression-a cortical correlate of migraine with aura. However, lately MEG technology has highly evolved with greater potential to reveal underlying patho

Language comprehension requires the recognition of individual words and the combination of their meanings to yield complex concepts or interpretations. This combinatory process often requires the insertion of unstated semantic material between words, based on thematic or feature knowledge. For example, the phrase horse barn is not interpreted as a blend of a horse and a barn, but specifically a barn where horses are kept. Previous neuroscientific evidence suggests that left posterior and anterior temporal cortex underpin thematic and feature-based concept knowledge, respectively, but much rema

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is accompanied by functional brain changes that can be detected in imaging studies, including electromagnetic activity recorded with magnetoencephalography (MEG). Here, we systematically review the studies that have examined resting-state MEG changes in AD and identify areas that lack scientific or clinical progress. Three levels of MEG analysis will be covered: (i) single-channel signal analysis, (ii) pairwise analyses over time series, which includes the study of interdependencies between two time series and (iii) global network analyses. We discuss the findings in t

PURPOSE: To clarify the usefulness of magnetoencephalography (MEG) for diagnosis of the spatial relations between spike foci and suspicious epileptogenic tubers on MRI in patients with tuberous sclerosis (TS) and to compare MEG spike foci with single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) findings.
METHODS: We analyzed magnetic fields of epileptic spike discharges in 15 patients with TS and localization-related epilepsy (LRE) by using MEG (a whole-head 204-channel magnetometer system). We investigated the spatial relation between the equivalent current dipoles (ECDs) of interictal spike
