The frequency and clinical characteristics of plasmodium infection were reported in 420 renal transplant recipients who were followed in the Transplantation Unit and Out-Patient Clinic of the Medical School of Istanbul. Plasmodium infection was diagnosed in eleven (9 male, 2 female) of the 420 patients (2.6%). Ten of the patients were transplanted in India, and one in our institution. The mean duration between the transplantation and the diagnosis of malaria was 21.7 + 44.4 days in patients who were transplanted in India. All of the patients were taking triple immunosuppressive drugs (CsA, AZA

Cerebral malaria is the most lethal form of Plasmodium falciparum infection. The disease is defined clinically as an otherwise unexplained coma in someone with malaria parasitemia. One in 6 children with cerebral malaria dies and many survivors are left with neurologic, cognitive, or behavioral sequelae. Acute seizures are common and increasing numbers of them during the index illness are associated with a greater likelihood of adverse outcomes. Optimal treatment pathways for children with cerebral malaria have been standardized but the search for an adjunctive therapy that decreases cerebral

Malaria prevention. Due to the huge difference in risk of infection between tropical Asia and America on the one hand and sub-saharan Africa on the other (ratio of 1 to 1000) and lack of transmission of Plasmodium falciparum in Asia and tropical America, it is now recommended to no longer prescribe chemoprophylaxis in these low-risk areas in the vast majority of cases (conventional stays), retaining the simple adage: Sub-Saharan Africa yes, elsewhere no ! In any case, travelers should be advised to limit the mosquito bites at night (especially repellents but also mosquito nets impregnated and

Malaria remains of significant public health concern under the tropics, causing millions of deaths annually. The disease is caused by protozoans of the Plasmodium genus, of which harbors several distinct species. Human infection occurs during the blood meal of an infected female mosquito belonging to the Anopheles genus. It is estimated that around 1% of children infected with Plasmodium falciparum develops a more severe form of malaria, which may eventually lead to cerebral complications including cerebral malaria (CM). CM can be positively diagnosed in patients unable to localize a painful s

The genus Plasmodium includes many species that naturally cause malaria among apes and monkeys. The 2004 discovery of people infected by Plasmodium knowlesi in Malaysian Borneo alerted to the potential for non-human species of plasmodia to cause human morbidity and mortality. Subsequent work revealed what appears to be a surprisingly high risk of infection and relatively severe disease, including among travelers to Southeast Asia. The biology and medicine of this zoonosis is reviewed here, along with an examination of the spectrum of Plasmodium species that may cause infection of humans.

Cerebral malaria (CM) is a life-threatening complication of falciparum malaria and some types of disturbed consciousness problems are major symptoms of CM. Although the pathogenesis of CM is unknown, the sequestration, the binding of red blood cells containing mature stages of the malaria parasite to the endothelium of the cerebral microvasculature, and the disappearance of erythrocytes infected with mature malaria parasite in the peripheral blood stream, are thought to play a key role in its pathogenesis. Falciparum malaria patients with disturbed consciousness should be considered to suffer

Cerebral malaria is a rapidly progressive potentially fatal complication of Plasmodium falciparum infection. It is characterized by unarousable and persistent coma along with symmetrical motor signs. Children, pregnant women and non-immune adults are more susceptible to have cerebral malaria. Several clinical, histopathological and laboratory studies have suggested that cytoadherence of parasitized erythrocytes (mechanical hypothesis), and neuronal injury by malarial toxin and excessive cytokine (e.g. tissue necrosis factor-alpha) production (cytotoxic hypothesis) are possible pathogenic mecha

Malaria is a disease caused by repeated cycles of growth of the parasite Plasmodium in the erythrocyte. Various cellular and molecular strategies allow the parasite to evade the human immune response for many cycles of parasite multiplication. Under certain circumstances Plasmodium infection causes severe anemia or cerebral malaria; the expression of disease is influenced by both parasite and host factors, as exemplified by the exacerbation of disease during pregnancy. This article provides an overview of malaria pathogenesis, synthesizing the recent field, laboratory, and epidemiological data

Travelers to areas where malaria is endemic must be apprised of the risks they will face and the methods they should employ to prevent infection. Patients should be screened for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, and a chemoprophylactic drug should be prescribed. Chloroquine should be given to tourists traveling to areas where chloroquine resistance has not been reported. For travelers to chloroquine-resistant areas, sulfadoxine with pyrimethaime or some other synergistic drug combination should be prescribed.

Cerebral malaria is an unusual and treatable cause of stupor and coma, and it can present suddenly in a healthy person. It is diagnosed by finding parasites on a blood smear and is treated either with chloroquine or with quinine, pyrimethamine, and sulfadiazine.

Congenital malaria from Malaysia is reported here for the first time. It occurred in a baby boy born to a 16-year-old primigravida who contracted Plasmodium falciparum infection during pregnancy. She suffered malaria during the later stages of pregnancy and at parturition. The placenta was heavily infested with various asexual stages of P. falciparum. Gametocytes were not seen. Extensive search did not show other species. Cord blood showed very light infection with young trophozoites of P. falciparum. Serological studies using IFA technique showed specific IgG and IgM antibodies to P. falcipar

BACKGROUND: Malaria control remains a challenge in many parts of the Sahel and sub-Sahel regions of Africa.
METHODS: We conducted an individually randomized, controlled trial to assess whether seasonal vaccination with RTS,S/AS01E was noninferior to chemoprevention in preventing uncomplicated malaria and whether the two interventions combined were superior to either one alone in preventing uncomplicated malaria and severe malaria-related outcomes.
RESULTS: We randomly assigned 6861 children 5 to 17 months of age to receive sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine and amodiaquine (2287 children [chemopreven

When patients with malaria exhibit impaired consciousness, cerebral malaria should be considered. Although malaria parasites infect red blood cells, they do not infect neurons. Cerebral malaria is thought to occur when parasite-infected red blood cells adhere to endothelial cells lining the brain microvasculature, obstructing the vascular lumen; however, its detailed pathophysiology remains unclear. If cerebral malaria is suspected, intravenous artesunate should be initiated as soon as possible.

INTRODUCTION: Eradication of malaria remains one of the main aims of medicine. Despite progress in malaria treatment, mortality rate remains high, especially in the poorest parts of the world. Therefore, prevention through vaccines is fundamental and recent approval of the first effective vaccine reinforced this assumption. However, since the parasite cycle is composed of three stages, different types of vaccine targeting stage-specific antigens shall be developed. Moreover, the beneficial effect on vaccinated subjects can be tuned using compositions targeting different stages.

Malaria, a parasitic disease the pathogen of which was discovered by Alphonse Laveran in 1880 in the blood of febrile patients, remains in 2022 the most frequent endemic disease in tropical and subtropical countries. In its latest "World Malaria Report" available in November 2021, the WHO deals in great detail with the data collected in the field in 2019-2020, their progression over the last 20 years, and the measures to be taken to try to better control this life-threatening endemic. The number of malaria cases is estimated at 232 million in 2019 in 87 endemic countries, down from 245 million

In the mosquito-human life cycle, the six species of malaria parasites infecting humans (Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale wallickeri, Plasmodium ovale curtisi, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium knowlesi) undergo 10 or more morphological states, replicate from single to 10,000+ cells, and vary in total population from one to many more than 106 organisms. In the human host, only a small number of these morphological stages lead to clinical disease and the vast majority of all malaria-infected patients in the world produce few (if any) symptoms in the human. Human clini

Malaria, the most significant parasitic disease of man, kills approximately one million people per year. Half of these deaths occur in those with cerebral malaria (CM). The World Health Organization (WHO) defines CM as an otherwise unexplained coma in a patient with malarial parasitemia. Worldwide, CM occurs primarily in African children and Asian adults, with the vast majority (greater than 90%) of cases occurring in children 5 years old or younger in sub-Saharan Africa. The pathophysiology of the disease is complex and involves infected erythrocyte sequestration, cerebral inflammation, and b
