This review article outlines urinary surgery in small mammals, stressing precise planning, specialized instruments, and tissue-sparing, minimally invasive approaches to reduce morbidity. It covers preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative care, including thorough preoperative workup, stabilization, imaging, and dietary advice to prevent recurrence of urolithiasis. Detailed techniques span kidney (biopsy, nephrotomy, nephrectomy, nephroureterectomy, and pyelolithotomy), ureter (urethrotomy, ureteroneocystostomy, stents, and subcutaneous ureteral bypass), and bladder procedures (cystotomy,

Adrenal gland disease has been described as a rare disease in pet rabbits and rodents. Hyperadrenocorticism with excessive secretion of corticosteroids is most commonly observed in guinea pigs and hamsters, with dermatologic signs similar to those seen in dogs. Diagnosis is based on clinical signs, diagnostic imaging such as abdominal ultrasound, and determination of the blood hormone concentrations. In guinea pigs, an adrenocorticotrophic hormone stimulation test with the measurement of salivary cortisol or corticosterone concentrations is recommended. The recommended treatment of adrenal dis

Small terrestrial mammals are major hosts of infectious agents responsible for zoonotic diseases. Astroviruses (AstVs)-the cause of non-bacterial gastroenteritis mainly affecting young children-have been detected in a wide array of mammalian and avian host species. However, understanding the factors that influence AstV infection within and across hosts is limited. Here, we investigated the impact of land use changes on AstVs in terrestrial small mammals in rural northeastern Madagascar. We sampled 515 small mammals, representing seven endemic and four introduced species. Twenty-two positive sa

Otoacoustic emissions (OAE) that were sound-induced, current-induced, or spontaneous have been measured in non-mammalian land vertebrates, including in amphibians, reptiles, and birds. There are no forms of emissions known from mammals that have not also been observed in non-mammals. In each group and species, the emission frequencies clearly lie in the range known to be processed by the hair cells of the respective hearing organs. With some notable exceptions, the patterns underlying the measured spectra, input-output functions, suppression threshold curves, etc., show strong similarities to

Several skin conditions seen in small mammals are thought to have a behavioral cause but their epidemiology and pathogenesis are poorly understood. A significant amount of research exists on barbering in mice that suggests it is an impulse control disorder and may represent a good animal model for trichotillomania in humans. Stress seems to play a complex role in the development and maintenance of some behavioral dermatopathies, but genetics and experiences, especially during development, also likely play a role. Pain or discomfort may underlie the development of many of these problems.

Ectoparasites inhabiting the skin are responsible for significant problems in small mammals, owing to ingestion of blood, lymph, sebaceous secretions, and scavenging skin debris, as well as a hypersensitivity reaction to parasite antigen resulting in severe pruritus and subsequent self-trauma-induced lesions. In general practice, the most common diagnosis in exotic pets is an unspecified mite infestation, but other ectoparasites such as lice, fleas, insects, or even helminths may cause dermatologic diseases. If treatment with topical insecticides is planned, the small mammal should be isolated

Spermatogenesis is a highly sophisticated process involved in the transmission of genetic heritage. It includes halving ploidy, repackaging of the chromatin for transport, and the equipment of developing spermatids and eventually spermatozoa with the advanced apparatus (e.g., tightly packed mitochondrial sheat in the mid piece, elongating of the tail, reduction of cytoplasmic volume) to elicit motility once they reach the epididymis. Mammalian spermatogenesis is divided into three phases. In the first the primitive germ cells or spermatogonia undergo a series of mitotic divisions. In the secon

Cryptorchidism is failure of one or both testes to descend into the scrotum. Primary fault lies in the testis. We provide a unifying cross-species interpretation of testis descent and urge the use of precise terminology. After differentiation, a testis is relocated to the scrotum in three sequential phases: abdominal translocation, holding a testis near the internal inguinal ring as the abdominal cavity expands away, along with slight downward migration; transinguinal migration, moving a cauda epididymidis and testis through the abdominal wall; and inguinoscrotal migration, moving a s.c. cauda

D-Aspartate (D-Asp) is an endogenous amino acid present in nervous and endocrine tissues in mammals. A high concentration of D-Asp is observed in embryos, which disappears in nervous tissues after delivery, but increases temporarily in endocrine glands, particularly in the pituitary, pineal and adrenal glands at the specific stages. In the pineal gland, D-Asp that is apparently derived from other tissues suppresses melatonin secretion from parenchymal cells. Additionally, D-Asp levels increase in the testis just before birth and during maturation. The amino acid is presumed to be synthesized b

Spleen cells, peripheral lymphocytes, and soleus muscles were removed from male Sprague-Dawley rats that had been run on a treadmill (24 m/min) for either 20, 40, or 60 min or to exhaustion (86 +/- 41 min) and were labeled in vitro with [35S]methionine at 37 degrees C. Similar tissues from nonrunning control rats were labeled in vitro at either 37 or 43 degrees C (heat shock). Fluorographic analyses of one- and two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic separations of the proteins from cells and tissues of exercised rats demonstrate the new or enhanced synthesis of proteins of approxim

Thirty-four cases of systemic mycosis in marine mammals were represented by 9 genera of fungi. All cases were characterized by pulmonary involvement, with miliary spread to abdominal organs. Cases were geographically distributed among Hawaii, northern United States, Europe, New Zealand, and southern Asia.

Advances in imaging, anesthesia, and surgical techniques have made thoracic surgery in small mammals clinically feasible, yet it remains challenging due to their small size, unique physiology, and the anatomic complexity of the thorax. Improvements in computed tomography, endoscopy, and perioperative care now allow safer and more precise diagnosis and treatment. Consequently, procedures such as midline thoracotomies for thymomas, pulmonary lobectomies, thoracoscopy, and even more specialized interventions like pacemaker implantation are now performed with increasing reliability. Nevertheless,

Small mammal ocular surgery requires knowledge on species-specific anatomic challenges that demand refined microsurgical skills. Rabbits frequently require surgical treatment of nasolacrimal obstruction, Harderian gland prolapse, corneal ulcers, and cataracts, with phacoemulsification offering good outcomes for the later. Hystricomorph rodents often present with dental-related retrobulbar abscesses, nonhealing corneal ulcers, or cataracts requiring enucleation. Ferrets commonly undergo surgical management of conjunctival lesions, cataracts, and orbital masses. In rats, mice, and hamsters, glob

Placental mammals (the clade that includes bats, primates and whales) developed highly varied molars as they diversified in the Palaeogene, indicating derived diets such as carnivory and herbivory1. Cretaceous eutherian stem taxa to Placentalia had, however, more conservative dentitions-typically molars with high, sharp cusps for insectivory. The discovery 38 years ago of molars of Late Cretaceous zhelestid mammals2 with relatively low (bunodont) cusps, convergent with those of herbivorous placental ungulates, suggested a previously unknown Cretaceous radiation of more placental-like fossils3-

The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) is a multiligand receptor of environmental stressors which plays key roles in pathophysiological processes, including immune/inflammatory disorders, Alzheimer's disease, diabetic arteriosclerosis, tumorigenesis, and metastasis. Besides the full-length RAGE protein in humans nearly 20 natural occurring RAGE splicing variants were described on mRNA and protein level. These naturally occurring isoforms are characterized by either N-terminally or C-terminally truncations and are discussed as possible regulators of the full-length RAGE recepto

BACKGROUND: Afrotheria comprises a newly recognized clade of mammals with strong molecular evidence for its monophyly. In contrast, morphological data uniting its diverse constituents, including elephants, sea cows, hyraxes, aardvarks, sengis, tenrecs and golden moles, have been difficult to identify. Here, we suggest relatively late eruption of the permanent dentition as a shared characteristic of afrotherian mammals. This characteristic and other features (such as vertebral anomalies and testicondy) recall the phenotype of a human genetic pathology (cleidocranial dysplasia), correlations wit

Water channels, aquaporins (AQPs), are a family of small integral plasma membrane proteins that primarily transport water across the plasma membrane. There are 13 members (AQP0-12) in humans. This number is final as the human genome project has been completed. They are divided into three subgroups based on the primary sequences: water selective AQPs (AQP0, 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8), aquaglyceroporins (AQP3, 7, 9, 10), and superaquaporins (AQP11, 12). Since no specific inhibitors are yet available, functional roles of AQPs are suggested by AQP null mice and humans. Abnormal water metabolism was shown w

Cryptosporidium species are common parasites of wild placental mammals. Recent parasitological studies combined with molecular genotyping techniques have been providing valuable new insight into the host specificity and potential transmission of various Cryptosporidium species/genotypes among animals and between these animals and humans. Although Cryptosporidium in wild animals may possess a potential public health problem due to oocyst contamination in the environment, studies at various regions of the world have indicated a strong host-adaptation by these parasites and a limited potential of
