Surgical Treatment of Aggressive Intraosseous Cavernous Hemangioma in Maxilla Through Surgical Resection.

Hemangiomas are benign vascular lesions characterized by endothelial vascular proliferation and may demonstrate aggressive clinical features. Intraosseous hemangiomas are uncommon and the maxillary location rare, with few cases described in the literature. The treatment of these lesions varies, however they have a better prognosis when a surgical treatment through resection is performed. The aim of this study is to report a case of right maxillary cavernous intraosseous hemangioma treated by surgical resection with previous embolization. The diagnosis was made through incisional biopsy and imm

Giant Juvenile Xanthogranuloma of face in an adult: A rare complexity.

Juvenile xanthogranuloma, a form of non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis can be defined as the proliferation of cells with macrophage like characteristics. It has been described as a benign, asymptomatic and common self-healing disorder of non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), affecting mostly infants, children and rarely adults. We have documented a case of a 40 year old male who presented to us with extensive insidious papulonodulous growth over the face. The facial disfigurement caused was catastrophic. An extensive surgical excision and reconstruction was performed followed by histopatholo

Pleistocene mitogenomes reconstructed from the environmental DNA of permafrost sediments.

Traditionally, paleontologists have relied on the morphological features of bones and teeth to reconstruct the evolutionary relationships of extinct animals.1 In recent decades, the analysis of ancient DNA recovered from macrofossils has provided a powerful means to evaluate these hypotheses and develop novel phylogenetic models.2 Although a great deal of life history data can be extracted from bones, their scarcity and associated biases limit their information potential. The paleontological record of Beringia3-the unglaciated areas and former land bridge between northeast Eurasia and northwes

COVID-19 and Coinfections: A Serious Health Threat Requires Combination of Diagnosis and Therapy.

Since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, a mammoth research activity targeting the etiological features of COVID-19 has commenced. Many aspects of the disease have been studied, and various others are under consideration. The secondary microbial coinfections with COVID-19 have generated some serious concerns across the globe. This review mainly focuses on the notable secondary coinfections. The coinfection of influenza, tuberculosis, and typhoid may mimic the original COVID-19 symptoms. Physicians and clinicians must focus on the secondary coinfections which may aggravate the disease

Asymptomatic Leishmania infections in northern India: a threat for the elimination programme?

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) continues to embody as a mammoth public health problem and hurdle to the socioeconomic development of Bihar, India. Interestingly, all leishmanial infections do not lead to overt clinical disease and may stay asymptomatic for a period of time. Asymptomatic cases of VL are considered as probable potential reservoirs of VL, and thus can play a major role in transmission of the disease in highly endemic areas of Bihar, India. They outnumber the exact disease burden in endemic areas of this region, thus jeopardizing the goal of the elimination program that is due by 201

The elephants of Zoba Gash Barka, Eritrea: part 4. Cholelithiasis in a wild African elephant (Loxodonta africana).

A 4.0-kg cholelith was found within the abdominal cavity of a dead wild African elephant (Loxodonta africana) in Eritrea. Analysis of this cholelith by histochemistry, electron microscopy, electrospray mass spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy revealed it was composed of bile alcohols but no calcium, bilirubin, or cholesterol. Bacteria were also found in the cholelith. Similar, but smaller, bile stones have been identified previously in other wild African elephants and an excavated mammoth (Mammuthus columbi). Choleliths have been reported only once in a captive Asian elephan

Hazardous volcanic CO2 diffuse degassing areas - A systematic review on environmental impacts, health, and mitigation strategies.

Volcanic CO2 diffuse degassing can impact infrastructure, soils, vegetation, microbiota, fauna, and human health. These impacts include acidification of soils, leading to sparse or absent vegetation and changes in microbiota types. Most of the study sites in this review are areas of quiescent volcanism, where soil CO2 emissions is a permanent and silent hazard. Lethal indoor and outdoor CO2 concentrations measured in different regions of the world (Azores, Aeolian and Canary Islands, Colli Albani, Methana, Massif Central, Mammoth Mountain, Nyiragongo, Nyamulagira, and Rotorua volcanoes) are as

Providing mental health services to survivors: a Kwa Zulu-Natal perspective.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was established to deal with the history and future prevention of the abuse of human rights in South Africa. It aimed to restore relationships between the state and/or other perpetrators and victims of violence. Nevertheless, the process has highlighted the alarming prevalence of psychological trauma in our society. This paper reports on a study of individuals and/or families who presented their testimonies to the TRC in the Kwa Zulu-Natal and Free State Provinces of South Africa. The participants were asked to complete a semi-structured questionna

Titin fragment in urine: A noninvasive biomarker of muscle degradation.

Titin/connectin, encoded by the TTN gene, is the largest protein in humans. It acts as a molecular spring in the sarcomere of striated muscles. Although titin is degraded in the skeletal muscles of patients with muscular dystrophies, studies of titin have been limited by its mammoth size. Mutations in the TTN gene have been detected not only in skeletal muscle diseases but in cardiac muscle diseases. TTN mutations result in a wide variety of phenotypes. Recent proteome analysis has found that titin fragments are excreted into the urine of patents with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Enzyme-

Hydatid disease (Echinococcus) of the central nervous system.

Hydatid disease of the central nervous system is rare and comprises about 2-3% of all the hydatid cyst cases reported in the world. Spinal hydatid is still rare. It is endemic in sheep and cattle-raising regions, seen mainly in Mediterranean countries including Turkey and Syria. Pediatric neurosurgeons in nonendemic countries face a challenge when they are encountered with hydatid cyst of the central nervous system due to lack of awareness and diagnostic dilemmas. It is also a mammoth economic problem in developing countries due to improper hygiene and lack of dedicated veterinary practice. Th

Splenic Infarction in a Patient With Sickle Cell Trait Following High-Altitude Exposure.

Sickle cell trait (SCT) is a generally asymptomatic carrier condition but clinical complications are recognized. Splenic infarction from exposure to high altitude is one complication of sickle cell trait. We report a 53-year-old man who traveled to Mammoth Lakes, California, and experienced an onset of abdominal pain approximately seven hours after arrival. In the local emergency department, the patient was diagnosed with presumed SCT using the sickle cell solubility test. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) of the abdomen and pelvis obtained 12 hours after symptom onset was read as m

COVID-19 in Singapore: Our Experience as a Country, and at Singapore General Hospital's Department of Emergency Medicine.

COVID-19 has changed our lives as we knew it. The world is not naive to infectious disease outbreaks, having experienced pandemics such as the H1N1 outbreak in 2009 with up to 400,000 deaths, and the "Spanish flu" in 1919 with up to 50 million deaths worldwide respectively (https://www.euro.who.int/en/health-topics/communicable-diseases/influenza/pandemic-influenza/past-pandemics). However, this outbreak caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 has taken the world by storm since it was first reported in end 2019. With the numbers of confirmed cases of COVID-19 and death to

Acute injuries in off-road bicycle racing.

A descriptive study was conducted to investigate injuries sustained at a major off-road bicycling race at Mammoth Mountain, California, July 6 to 10, 1994. A total of 4027 individual starts in five events during the race were reported. Overall, the total number of competitors in the 5 events was 3624, with some cyclists participating in multiple events. Injuries were considered significant if they occurred during competition and prevented the rider from completing the event. Sixteen cyclists had injuries that met these criteria for an overall injury rate of 0.40%. These 16 cyclists had 44 inju

Potential role of herbal medicines as a novel approach in sepsis treatment.

The growing number of deaths related to sepsis has become a major concern for past few years. Sepsis is a complex pathological reactions that is explained by series of host response to microbial insult. The resulted systemic reactions are manifested by early appearance of proinflammatory cytokines leading to hyperinflammatory phase which is followed by septic shock and death of the patient. The present study has revealed that antibiotics are not self-sufficient to control the complex mechanism of sepsis. Moreover prolonged and unnecessary administration of antibiotics may lead to antibiotic re

Increased incidences of cervical ribs in deer indicate extinction risk.

Mammals as a rule have seven cervical vertebrae, a number which remains remarkably conserved. Occasional deviations of this number are usually due to the presence of cervical ribs on the seventh vertebra, indicating a homeotic transformation from a cervical rib-less vertebra into a thoracic rib-bearing vertebra. These transformations are often associated with major congenital abnormalities or pediatric cancers (pleiotropic effects) that are, at least in humans, strongly selected against. Based on data from Late Pleistocene mammoths (Mammuthus primigenius) and woolly rhinoceroses (Coelodonta an

An efficient image encryption model based on 6D hyperchaotic system and symmetric matrix for color and gray images.

The security of images is one of the predominant pivotal aspects in the mammoth and still expanding digital domain. Due to chaotic system properties i.e. randomness and unpredictability is very appropriate to encrypt the images. In this research article, we construct an encryption model via 6D hyperchaotic map and a symmetric matrix for both color and grayscale images. We utilize the 6D hyperchaotic map in the confusion stage to change the pixel location and the symmetric matrix is used for changing the pixel value in the diffusion step for each RGB channel extraction from plain or original im

An overview of the regulation of influenza vaccines in the United States.

Influenza virus vaccines are unique among currently licensed viral vaccines. The vaccines designed to protect against seasonal influenza illness must be updated periodically in an effort to match the vaccine strain with currently circulating viruses, and the vaccine manufacturing timeline includes multiple, overlapping processes with a very limited amount of flexibility. In the United States (U.S.), over 150 million doses of seasonal trivalent and quadrivalent vaccine are produced annually, a mammoth effort, particularly in the context of a vaccine with components that usually change on a year

Drivers of bacterial genomes plasticity and roles they play in pathogen virulence, persistence and drug resistance.

Despite the advent of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, sophisticated data analysis and drug development efforts, bacterial drug resistance persists and is escalating in magnitude. To better control the pathogens, a thorough understanding of their genomic architecture and dynamics is vital. Bacterial genome is extremely complex, a mosaic of numerous co-operating and antagonizing components, altruistic and self-interested entities, behavior of which are predictable and conserved to some extent, yet largely dictated by an array of variables. In this regard, mobile genetic elements (

Ultrasound-optimized phenolic recovery from feijoa (Acca sellowiana) peel: Cultivar variability, antioxidant capacity, and in vitro starch digestion.

Acca sellowiana (feijoa) peel is a rich phenolic source. Response surface methodology with the central composite design was employed to optimize ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) parameters (46 °C, 50 % ethanol, 35 min) for feijoa peel phenolics, yielding 116.30 mg GAE/g DW TPC. Comparative analysis across cultivars identified Gemini with the highest TPC (133.0 mg GAE/g DW) and DPPH activity (671.07 μmol TE/g DW), while Mammoth showed the highest ABTS (2087.78 μmol TE/g DW) and FRAP (896.16 μmol TE/g DW) values. In vitro digestion revealed potent starch-digestion inhibition by early-maturin
