Cancer fatigue and hair loss experiences among American Indian men.

Background: Little is known about the cancer symptom experiences of Indigenous populations, particularly concerning fatigue and hair loss. Hair loss can have many detrimental effects given the significant cultural importance of hair in Indigenous communities. Gaining a better understanding of the unique perspectives of American Indian male cancer survivors as they manage these two distinct symptoms is essential for improving symptom management and quality of life measures in this underserved population. Methods: A multi-pronged study explored the barriers, facilitators, and cultural constructs

Subclavian artery aneurysms: Management strategies by etiology and anatomical classification.

The importance of management strategies for subclavian artery aneurysms (SAAs) is underscored by the risks of aneurysm rupture and distal ischemia. However, there is no consensus on the optimal timing or strategies for treatment due to their low incidence. The existing literature primarily comprises case reports and small retrospective studies, providing limited high-quality evidence. The preservation of the vertebral artery (VA) is critical to the prognosis of SAA repair, particularly when a dominant ipsilateral VA exists and the circle of Willis is incomplete. In this review, we integrate pu

Long-Term Efficacy of Guideline-Followed Treatment in Patients with Livedoid Vasculopathy: A Single-Center Study.

Objective: Livedoid vasculopathy is a skin disease characterized by recurrent painful ulcerations of the lower leg leading to scar formation (atrophie blanche). Ulceration results from thrombosis of the cutaneous microcirculation and is often preceded by irregular broken circles of skin discoloration (livedo racemosa) in the lower extremities. Intense local ischemic pain, ulcerations, and irreversible scarring have a severe impact on patients' quality of life. There are currently no approved treatments for livedoid vasculopathy, making off-label therapy the only option. The German S1 guideline

Advances in sarcopenia and urologic disorders.

Sarcopenia is a loss of muscle strength, muscle mass, and function that can increase a patient's risk of injury, illness, and can even severely impair quality of life and increase a patient's risk of death. A growing body of research suggests that sarcopenia and urinary tract disorders are closely related. In this review, we aimed to emphasize the definition of skeletal sarcopenia, summarize the methods used to diagnose skeletal sarcopenia, discuss the advances in the study of sarcopenia in benign diseases of the urinary system, discuss the advances in the study of sarcopenia in malignant dise

Eat, breathe, sleep with Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

BACKGROUND: Although Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) affects the connective tissue causing extremely brittle bones with consequent skeletal deformities, it is important to go beyond bones. Indeed, the quality of life in OI does not only depend on bones status, as OI might affect also other important functions. We have therefore implemented a multidisciplinary study to assess lung function, breathing pattern, sleep quality and nutritional status in 27 adult OI type III and IV patients (median age: 34.6 years; 19 women; 14 type III). RESULTS: According to nocturnal oxygen desaturation, two groups

[Organ Donation - Management from Donor Identification to Organ Procurement].

According to the Transplantation Act (TPG), clinics and transplant commissaries (TxB) are obliged to ensure quality in donor evaluation. They are supervised. TxBs exist in every hospital that carries out organ harvesting and are always available. They are responsible for the conception of the organ donation process and should manage each individual case from the evaluation to the implementation of the patient's wishes. The evaluation for potential organ donors should be routine and supported by IT technology. The intensive care team must inform the TxB about living patients who "come into consi

A New Proposal for the Pathogenic Mechanism of Non-Coeliac/Non-Allergic Gluten/Wheat Sensitivity: Piecing Together the Puzzle of Recent Scientific Evidence.

Non-coeliac/non-allergic gluten/wheat sensitivity (NCG/WS) is a gluten-related disorder, the pathogenesis of which remains unclear. Recently, the involvement of an increased intestinal permeability has been recognized in the onset of this clinical condition. However, mechanisms through which it takes place are still unclear. In this review, we attempt to uncover these mechanisms by providing, for the first time, an integrated vision of recent scientific literature, resulting in a new hypothesis about the pathogenic mechanisms involved in NCG/WS. According to this, the root cause of NCG/WS is a

Domiciliary Carers' Perspectives on Alcohol Use by Older Adults in Their Care: A Systematic Review and Thematic Synthesis of Qualitative Studies.

As global populations continue to age, alcohol consumption rises, and we strive to age in place, it is important to have an up-to-date understanding of domiciliary carers' perspectives on older adults' alcohol use in their care. Therefore, a systematic review and thematic synthesis of qualitative studies of the unique challenges faced by domiciliary care workers in front line roles regarding older adults' alcohol use was conducted (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42024516660). Eight databases were searched on 22 February 2024 for qualitative studies focusing on older adults' (defined as aged

Turbinate Hypertrophy, Allergic Rhinitis, and Otitis Media.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Otitis media (OM) is a disease with high prevalence in infancy; it has a substantial burden on healthcare resources and a relevant impact on the quality of life of families. The link between OM and allergic rhinitis (AR) is still debated. However, there is agreement about the relevance of type 2 inflammation on turbinate hypertrophy (TH) generation. There is also evidence that TH is associated with middle ear dysventilation: a pathogenic factor promoting OM. Therefore, a vicious circle among AR, TH, and OM may occur. RECENT FINDINGS: There are some recent studies exploring

Pattern recognition and spatial differentiation of built environment around urban sports facilities from perspective of facility hierarchy: a case study of Changsha city.

Under the context of healthy city development and the construction of 15-min life circles, the relationship between the built environment and residents' physical activity and health has attracted increasing attention. However, most existing studies adopt a residential-centered perspective, neglect the heterogeneity of service ranges across different levels of sports facilities, and insufficiently integrate objective built-environment characteristics with residents' facility-use behaviors and subjective perceptions. Taking Changsha city as a case study, this paper develops a hierarchical sports

Psychosocial Aspects in Patients With Chronic Leg Ulcers.

Chronic leg ulcers persist for > 6 weeks and show no tendency to heal after 3 or more months. They can be distressing to patients, both directly through physical symptoms caused by the disease and indirectly through limitations on work capacity, social activity, and personal hygiene. The quality of life (QoL) of patients with leg ulcers can be impaired by a complex set of aspects. Restrictions in their ability to perform paid employment, handle household duties, and engage in personal hygiene adversely affect patients' QoL. Patients with chronic leg ulcers frequently experience negative emotio

'Do no harm': management of craniopharyngioma.

Craniopharyngioma management is challenging. Although histology is benign, the tumour can be clinically aggressive with local invasion and frequent recurrences. Extensive morbidity may be present at diagnosis and furthermore, occurs as a consequence of neurosurgery and radiotherapy. Hypothalamic symptoms can have a devastating effect on quality of life and may reduce life expectancy. This case highlights both the challenge of managing hyperphagia and morbid obesity and the importance of initial treatment preserving existing hypothalamic function and the need to avoid tumour recurrence and furt

PRIME - A multilevel intervention for low back pain management in primary care: Protocol for an effectiveness-implementation hybrid type 1 cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is a leading cause of disability and healthcare utilization worldwide, yet management in primary care often remains inconsistent with clinical guidelines, with underuse of high-value care and persistent use of low-value interventions. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of PRIME (PRImary care MultilEvel intervention for low back pain) compared with usual care in terms of cost-effectiveness (system level), back-related imaging rates (practitioner level), and self-reported disability (patient level), while concurrently examining im

Application of Quality Control Circle Activity in Improving Effectiveness of Drug Intervention in Lung Cancer Patients with Moderate to Severe Pain.

OBJECTIVE: Lung cancer has the highest incidence and mortality of all malignant tumors in China. Cancer pain dramatically affects patients' comfort level, causing insomnia, anorexia, anxiety, fear, depression, and a decline in the quality of life (QOL). The literature suggests a shortage of adequate cancer pain management for 59.1% of patients in China. The quality control circle (QCC) activity reflects the people-oriented core idea of management. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of QCC in enhancing the effectiveness of drug interventions in lung cancer patients with moderate to severe
