A population-based survey assessing support for mandatory domestic violence reporting by health care personnel.

BACKGROUND: State laws mandating health care personnel to contact police when treating patients injured as a result of domestic violence are controversial. Attitudes toward these laws have been studied in select groups, but never in a large population-based sample. METHODS: We measured support for mandatory reporting (MR) among 845 women in 11 cities who participated in a telephone survey assessing risk factors for intimate partner violence. Abused women were oversampled to create equal groups (427 abused and 418 non-abused); results are presented stratified by abuse status or weighted based

Knowledge and Perceptions of Child Protection and Mandatory Reporting: A Survey of Nurses in Hong Kong.

In the absence of a mandatory reporting (MR) structure, it is unclear how nurses perceive or exercise their role in child protection. This study examined knowledge and perceptions of child protection and MR among nurses working in Hong Kong. This cross-sectional web-based survey used the Child Abuse Report Intention Scale to measure nurses' child protection knowledge and attitudes, and their perceived norms, control, and intention to report suspected maltreatment. Nurses also indicated if they support MR and to provide an explanation for their preference. Quantitative data were described and a

Legal and policy issues from the United States and internationally about mandatory reporting of child abuse.

Laws that mandate reporting of child abuse have stirred global controversy. Mandatory reporting to authorities for different types of child abuse includes physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, educational neglect, and emotional neglect. While the definition of child abuse differs from jurisdiction-to-jurisdiction, which covers a wide spectrum of abuse and maltreatment, employees who work in professions required to report child abuse include health care workers, educational employees, social workers, religious leaders, employees of divisions of child protective servic

Mandatory reporting of healthcare-associated infections: a global comparative policy analysis using Kingdon's multiple streams framework.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) impose a substantial burden on healthcare systems worldwide. Despite strong evidence of their impact and preventability, national infection prevention and control (IPC) surveillance systems remain inconsistently implemented. In contrast, the COVID-19 pandemic catalyzed rapid surveillance reforms, highlighting policy conditions that facilitate surveillance-based IPC strategies. OBJECTIVE: To examine policy factors influencing the implementation of national HAI surveillance and compare the policy window created during COVID-19 with the more li

‘It’s a necessary evil’: Experiences and perceptions of mandatory reporting of child abuse in Victorian general practice.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: General practitioners (GPs) and practice nurses (PNs) are mandated to report child abuse; however, only 2–4% of reports are made by Victorian health professionals. This is concerning, given that the estimated prevalence of physical child abuse alone in Australia is 5–18%. The aim of this study was to explore GPs’ and PNs’ experiences and perceptions of mandatory reporting of child abuse in Victoria. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 17 Victorian GPs and PNs were undertaken and thematically analysed. RESULTS: Participants had limited understanding of mandatory

Does mandatory reporting legislation increase contact with child protection? - a legal doctrinal review and an analytical examination.

BACKGROUND: Within Canadian provinces over the past half-century, legislation has been enacted to increase child protection organization (CPO) involvement in situations of child maltreatment (CM). This study had two objectives: 1) to document enactment dates of legislation for mandatory reporting of CM; 2) to examine reported CPO involvement among people reporting a CM history in relation to the timing of these legislative changes. METHODS: The history of mandatory reporting of CM was compiled using secondary sources and doctrinal legal review of provincial legislation. The 2012 Canadian Comm

Preferences for training on mandatory reporting of intimate partner violence among healthcare professionals: a Norwegian cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Training healthcare professionals to recognize and respond to intimate partner violence (IPV) is an important component of health system responses to violence. However, little research has explored how healthcare professionals prefer such training to be delivered. OBJECTIVES: This study explored healthcare professionals' preferences for training modalities on mandatory reporting of IPV and the associations between participant characteristics and preferred training modalities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between May and September 2025 (N = 266) am

Reimagining Supportive Approaches at the Intersection of Mandatory Reporting Policies for the Mother-Infant Dyad Affected by Substance Use.

BACKGROUND: As rates of substance use during pregnancy persist, the health and optimal development of infants with prenatal substance exposure remain a key priority. Nurses are tasked with identifying and reporting suspected cases of child maltreatment, including abuse and neglect, which is often assumed to be synonymous with substance use during pregnancy. While policies aimed at protecting infants from child abuse and neglect are well intentioned, literature regarding the short- and long-term social and legal implications of mandatory reporting policies is emerging. PURPOSE: In this article

The Role of Mandatory Reporting, Perpetrator and Violence Type, and Alcohol Consumption in Undergraduates' Likelihood of Disclosing Sexual Violence.

It remains unclear if mandatory reporting (MR) of sexual violence (SV) in universities impacts student reports of SV. MR may deter students from disclosing SV under certain circumstances (e.g., alcohol, perpetrator). This study evaluated students' likelihood of reporting SV under MR policy across perpetrators, violence, and alcohol use. Female students received instructional manipulations describing either confidential or mandatory reporting policies before reading four vignettes describing SV. They rated their likelihood of reporting each vignette. Significant differences arose across vignett

Mandatory surveillance and outbreaks reporting of the WHO priority pathogens for research & discovery of new antibiotics in European countries.

OBJECTIVES: In 2017 the WHO published a global priority list of 12 antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in urgent need of new antibiotics. We aimed to identify and assess publicly accessible mandatory surveillance systems and outbreaks reporting for these pathogens in the 28 European Union and four European Free Trade Association member states. METHODS: Compulsory reporting was mapped by reviewing national documents without applying language restrictions and through expert consultation. Information on surveillance targets, indicators, metrics and dissemination modalities was extracted and a qu

Mandatory reporting of child maltreatment when delivering family-based treatment for eating disorders: A framework analysis of practitioner experiences.

BACKGROUND: Increasingly, evidence-based treatment guidelines emphasize the role of parents in first-line treatment approaches for child and adolescent psychiatric disorders. Yet there are no best practice guidelines for practitioners on the identification and reporting of suspicions and disclosures of child maltreatment to child protection services (CPS) in these circumstances. This is particularly concerning given that undetected and unreported child maltreatment may exacerbate the vulnerabilities of youth with mental illness. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to describe family-bas

Trends in the Prevalence of Intraoperative Adverse Events at Two Academic Hospitals After Implementation of a Mandatory Reporting System.

BACKGROUND: Anesthesia information management systems (AIMSs) have been effectively used to improve quality in anesthesia care, and have enabled the development of mandatory quality assurance (QA) reporting systems for adverse events (AEs). While this approach has been shown to increase event reporting over time, the long-term effect of such a system on quality is unknown. We investigated the trends in AE reporting over time after implementing AIMS-based mandatory reporting systems at 2 academic medical centers. METHODS: At Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, AEs were retrieved after implem

Using a mandatory reporting database to recruit persons living with HIV/AIDS to study access to care in Mississippi.

Using funds provided by the Ryan White Care Act, we conducted a statewide needs assessment of persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Mississippi as required by provisions of the Act. Most published research addressing access to care for PLWHA is based on convenience samples of persons already accessing care in specified clinic locations. For this study of a single state with a well-established mandatory reporting system, we conducted a cross-sectional study interviewing a random sample of PLWHA across the state of Mississippi. The Mississippi State Department of Health has maintained the Miss

[Mandatory Reporting as the Basis of Epidemiological Statistics: The Impact of the Reporting Practice and Usage of Paper Technologies on the Informative Content of Morbidity Statistics 1886-1921].

This article examines the impact of the reporting practice and paper technologies like forms on reports that were later used for national morbidity statistics by studying the Swiss reporting system for infectious diseases between 1886 and 1921. Analysing the production processes of notifications shows the difficulties and solutions in the implementation of the statutory reporting process. Two disease outbreaks-a smallpox outbreak in Schaffhausen and a typhoid outbreak in the canton of Lucerne-serve as case studies. It is shown that reports are not only objective representations of diseases, bu

[Human hydatidosis: general aspects and epidemiological situation in Chile according to hospital discharge and mandatory reporting from 2001 to 2005].

Human hydatidosis in Chile is described using as a source of information the Disease Notification Systems and hospital discharges between 2001 and 2005. To assess the extent of human infection we calculated incidence rates and hospital discharges during this period by geographical region. Incidence rate for the period was 2.2 per 100,000 inhabitants with higher rates in the regions of Coquimbo, La Araucania and Magallanes. The hospital discharge rate for the period was 6 per 100.000 inhabitants, being the most affected regions: La Araucania, Aysén and Magallanes. 58.8% of cases reported are fr

On the Ethics of Mandatory Reporting of Positive Drug Tests in Newborns and Pregnant Parents at the Time of Delivery.

The opioid epidemic has renewed debate about how to structure laws, agency policies and hospital protocols for mandatory reporting of illicit substances during pregnancy. This paper analyzes the ethics of Rhode Island's approach to mandatory reporting - in particular, reporting of positive maternal and newborn drug tests at time of delivery. Given that state intervention is generally perceived by pregnant people as punitive and threatening to their family, we consider how four elements often used to justify punitive action by the state - retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation, and incapacitat
