Proximity of the Mandibular Canal to Teeth and Cortical Bone.

INTRODUCTION: The proximity of the inferior alveolar canal to the mandibular molar roots may pose a risk of injury during various dental surgeries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate age-related and gender-related changes by using cone-beam computed tomography images between the roots of the second molars, mandibular cortex, and the inferior alveolar canal. METHODS: One hundred fifty-five patients (68 men, 87 women), 20 years and older, who had previous cone-beam computed tomography scans were enrolled in this study. The patients were subcategorized by gender and age (group I, <21 year

Location of the mandibular canal within the atrophic mandible.

In 43 edentulous, lower jaw halves, sections were carried out in the area between the mental foramen and the third molar. The relative changes in the location and course of the mandibular canal which are caused by atrophy were analysed. For this purpose, the mandibles were classified according to so-called residual ridge orders which describe the different stages of alveolar ridge resorption. The following findings were obtained: The distance between the mandibular canal and the lingual and buccal external border does not change in any stage of the atrophic process, i.e. it remains conspicuous

Mandibular first premolar with three root canals.

This report presents a case of endodontic treatment of a mandibular first premolar with 3 root canals and a review of the literature concerning root canal anatomy of lower premolars. It is stressed that, even in teeth with a low frequency of abnormal root canal anatomy, the possibility of additional root canals has to be considered in the clinical and radiographic examination of the patient.

Monostotic fibrous dysplasia with involvement of the mandibular canal.

A 72-year-old woman sought treatment with a rare monostotic fibrous dysplasia occurring in the mandible and involving the mandibular canal. Her chief complaint was swelling, which had appeared about 2 years previously, had enlarged gradually, and was associated with spontaneous pain. X-ray film examination revealed a ground-glass opaque image of blurred demarcation, and 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate bone scintigraphy disclosed an area of marked radioisotope uptake. Histopathologic examination revealed the area of bone marrow and spongy bone to be replaced by fibrous tissue, irregular beam-shap

[Auditory canal hemorrhage as a symptom of mandibular trauma].

Auditory canal hemorrhage is usually a sign of a basal skull fracture. It is commonly unknown that this sign can also be a symptom of combined fracture of the external auditory canal and the mandibular condyle. In our investigations of patients with maxillofacial injuries we found in 15% of 197 fractures of the mandibular condyle within 3 years this combination. In sequence of these results there is a differential diagnostic need for an exact investigation to clear up these various causes in each case as first step toward an accurate therapy. The mechanism of these fractures, their etiology, a

Anatomical and radiographic study of the mandibular retromolar canal.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: As the demand for surgical procedure in the retromolar area of the mandible has been increasing, the identification of the retromolar foramen (RMF) and canal involving the retromolar triangle (RMT) has become an issue of clinical concern. We examined the shape of the RMT, incidence of the RMF, and intraosseous trajectory of the retromolar canal (RMC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 118 sides of dry mandibles, 22 sides of mandibles of 13 cadavers, and cone-beam computed tomography (CT) images of 100 patients were examined. Micro-CT data of 13 cadavers were reconstructed

Displacement of a root form implant into the mandibular canal.

An unusual complication associated with the placement of osseointegrated root form implants is presented. Discussion of this complication focuses on treatment planning and anatomic considerations in the posterior mandible that impact the viability of implant placement. Vital structures in this location, including the mandibular canal, are often obscured on routine panoramic radiography. Tomograms of the maxilla or mandible can provide data on cortical plate thickness, location of vital structures, and the presence of large medullary spaces, information that will decrease the incidence of impla

Anesthesia following overfilling of a root canal sealer into the mandibular canal: a case report.

The surgical treatment of a case of anesthesia that occurred with the extrusion of Endomethasone root canal sealer into the mandibular canal is presented. Endomethasone is a neurotoxic root canal sealer containing paraformaldehyde and eugenol. The literature indicates immediate surgical decompression on the extrusion of Endomethasone into the mandibular canal. In our case, the decompression surgery was done 3 weeks after the endodontic mishap. The nearly complete resolution of anesthesia 4 months following the decompression surgery suggests that the neurotoxic effects of Endomethasone are stil

Diagnosis and root canal treatment of a mandibular second premolar with three root canals.

AIM: To present a case of a mandibular second premolar with three root canals. SUMMARY: An accurate diagnosis of the morphology of the root canal system is a prerequisite for successful root canal treatment. A review of the literature reveals a low incidence of all types of premolars with three root canals. Diagnostic means such as preoperative radiographs and examination of the pulp chamber floor aid the location of root canal orifices. The diagnostic and therapeutic problems concerning premolars with unusual anatomy are described on the basis of a clinical example. A case report describes t

Evaluation of the cortication ratio and visibility of mandibular canal and mandibular incisive canal in patients with mandibular cortical index type 1 on cone-beam computed tomography images.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular canal visibility (MCV) is important to determine the relative position of the mandibular canal (MC) before any invasive surgery. It depends on the cortication ratio (CR) of the canal's superior border. This study aimed to evaluate the MCV and CR in patients with mandibular cortical index 1 (MCI1). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, 132 mandibular cone-beam computed tomography images of patients with MCI1 were evaluated. 6-point rating MCV score and CR were determined for cross-sections of the MC in the following areas: incisive canal (INC), mental foram

Relation of Mandibular Canal Discontinuity and IAN Paresthesia in Operated Cases of Mandibular Fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular fractures are common in maxillofacial trauma, often requiring surgical intervention for optimal recovery. One critical concern during such procedures is the potential for nerve damage, specifically involving the mandibular canal. This study aims to investigate whether the presence of postoperative mandibular canal discontinuity is associated with an increased risk of nerve damage. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective analysis was conducted on a cohort of 72 postoperative mandibular fracture patients. In total, 58 patients had entire mandibular canal continuity, while 14 showe

Towards clinically applicable automated mandibular canal segmentation on CBCT.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a deep learning-based system for precise, robust, and fully automated segmentation of the mandibular canal on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. METHODS: The system was developed on 536 CBCT scans (training set: 376, validation set: 80, testing set: 80) from one center and validated on an external dataset of 89 CBCT scans from 3 centers. Each scan was annotated using a multi-stage annotation method and refined by oral and maxillofacial radiologists. We proposed a three-step strategy for the mandibular canal segmentation: extraction of the region of interest ba

Morphological integration in inferior alveolar canal and mandibular shapes.

OBJECTIVE: During embryogenesis of mandible, the initial ossification centre begins at the bifurcation of the inferior alveolar (IA) and the mental nerves. Additionally, in congenital anomalies like craniofacial microsomia (CFM), the IA canal is completely absent on the microsomic side. These observations led us to hypothesise that there may be a morphological integration between these structures - the IA nerve and the mandibular shapes. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to test for morphological integration between these structures and the secondary objective was to determine

[Third molar and mandibular canal: selection of radiographic techniques].

Injury of the inferior alveolar nerve during extraction of mandibular third molar is a well recognized, but uncommon, serious complication. It has a serious impact on oral function and its psychological impact on the patient is great. To prevent this complication, several studies have been conducted to identify the high-risk radiological signs associated with intimate anatomic relationships between third molar and infra-alveolar nerve and thereby establish a unified process of radiological exploration. In this paper, the authors present a review of the literature of the recent studies involvin

Mandibular second molar with C-shaped canal morphology and five canals: report of a case.

This article reviews a case involving endodontic treatment of a mandibular second molar with C-shaped canal morphology and five separate canals. The C-shaped canal variation of morphology is unusual and can lead to difficulties during treatment. Preoperative radiographs are limited in their ability to detect this entity; for a favorable treatment outcome, knowledge of the C-shaped canal's existence and morphology is essential.
