Mandibular deformity associated with Paget's disease. Case report.

Paget's disease (osteitis deformans) and osteoporosis represent the commonest systemic bone disorders. Clinically Paget's disease may be mono-, or polyostotic, and is characterized by excessive and disorganized formation and resorption of bone. It may affect any of the facial bones, most notably the skull and the jaws. A case is described in which the only symptomatic manifestation of Paget's disease was mandibular prognathism. The pathogenesis, aetiology, and management are discussed.

Treating a mandibular condylar fracture in a patient with Huntington's disease.

This case illustrates the use of a microplate in the open reduction and fixation of an intracapsular mandibular condylar fracture in a patient who was unable to tolerate a closed reduction because of the nature of her chronic illness. The advantages of this method of fracture fixation include early function and elimination of intermaxillary fixation, which benefited our patient. This technique should be reserved for patients for whom conservative measures are not appropriate.

Characterization of mandibular bone in a mouse model of chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide health problem with increasing prevalence and poor outcomes, including severe cardiovascular disease and renal osteodystrophy. With advances in medical treatment, patients with CKD are living longer and require oral care. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of CKD and dietary phosphate on mandibular bone structure using a uremic mouse model. METHODS: Uremia (U) was induced in female dilute brown agouti/2 mice by partial renal ablation. Uremic mice received a normal-phosphate (NP) or a high-phosphate (HP) diet. sham surgerie

Mandibular osteomyelitis and multiple skeletal complications in Albers-Schönberg disease.

Albers-Schönberg disease, or autosomal dominant osteopetrosis type II, is the most common form of the rare disease, osteopetrosis. Mandibular osteomyelitis is a rare complication of the disease. A host of other skeletal complications may also occur. Mandibular osteomyelitis along with bilateral severe coxa vara and pars fracture is very rare in Albers-Schönberg disease. We present the occurrence of these complications in a 24-year-old man with Albers-Schönberg disease. His mandibular osteomyelitis was successfully treated.

Mandibular asymmetry in adult patients with unilateral degenerative joint disease.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between unilateral degenerative joint disease (UDJD) and lower facial asymmetry. Twenty symptomatic patients and 20 asymptomatic volunteers were studied. Posteroanterior radiographs and bilateral mandibular laminographs were used to evaluate lower face and mandibular asymmetry. The two-way analysis of variance test was used to compare the groups. The posteroanterior radiographs did not reveal vertical asymmetry for the patients. The group with the left side affected exhibited deviation of the mandibular dental midline, the menton, and t

Treatment of a Mandibular Abscess in a Patient with Coronary Artery Disease and Intermittent Angina.

An in-depth understanding of coronary artery disease will be critical to providing safe and effective dental care. Individuals with ischemic heart disease are at increased risk for anginal symptoms during dental care. Consultation with a cardiologist is advisable to ascertain cardiac stability for dental care if a patient has undergone recent coronary artery bypass graft surgery (less than 6 months ago). Judicious use of vasoactive agents during dental treatment is recommended. Antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications should be continued and local hemostatic measures used to control bleeding

Virtual Surgical Planning for Mandibular Reconstruction in Paget Disease With Severe Deformity.

Paget disease of the mandible is a rare metabolic bone disorder characterized by abnormal bone remodeling, resulting in deformity and structural weakness. Medical therapy, including bisphosphonates, is the most common treatment; however, chronic osteomyelitis is a known complication of mandibular Paget disease, and definitive management with mandibular resection and reconstruction has rarely been reported. Mandibular reconstruction in such cases is particularly challenging because severe deformity obscures normal anatomical landmarks. Virtual surgical planning (VSP) and patient-specific recons

Rare mandibular condition presenting as trismus: an exploration of IgG4-related disease.

A woman in her 30s presented with a 12-month history of reduced mouth opening and swelling on the right side of her mandible. The swelling was non-tender and firm on palpation. The swelling began to increase in size after the extraction of her carious wisdom tooth. Histopathological and serological examinations confirmed the diagnosis of IgG4-related disease, manifested as a mass in the mandible. The patient was prescribed oral corticosteroids at a tapering dosage over 8 weeks. After 3 months, there was an improvement in the patient's mouth opening and a reduction in the size of the swelling.

Evaluation of Mandibular Bone Microstructure in CT Scans of People with Sickle Cell Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a common inherited disease, and is characterized by a genetic modification that determines the production of a hemoglobin with altered morphology. This anatomical change of hemoglobin leads to vaso-occlusive disorders and premature hemolysis of the cell, causing chronic anemia and bone marrow hyperplasia due to increased hematopoietic demand. As a consequence, several skeletal changes are reported in the skull, spine, ribs, pelvis, femur, and metatarsals. In the craniofacial region, dentofacial deformities are described, especially maxillary protrusion.

Mandibular Distraction in Robin Sequence With Multi-Level Airway Disease: Always Contraindicated?

In patients with Pierre Robin sequence (PRS), understanding the mechanism of airway obstruction and the potential for concurrent airway lesions is important for determining appropriate intervention. When concomitant airway anomalies are present with PRS, mandibular distraction osteogenesis alone is often contraindicated and unsuccessful at alleviating the obstruction, mandating the need for tracheostomy. Herein, the authors present the second-reported case of PRS with concomitant complete tracheal rings and highlight the importance collaborative surgical efforts to avoid tracheostomy. Our pati

Mandibular Osteomyelitis and Acute Soft Head Syndrome in an Adolescent With Sickle Cell Disease.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a type of inherited disorder of hemoglobin characterized by recurring vaso-occlusive pain crises that affect many organ systems. Although it is uncommon, involvement of the orofacial region, such as the mandible area and jaw, can lead to a mandibular osteomyelitis, which can cause serious morbidity and diagnostic uncertainty. We describe a 17-year-old male Saudi patient with SCD who initially complained of bodily ache before developing fever, facial swelling, frontoparietal head swelling, and elevated inflammatory markers. The image resembled an odontogenic abscess
