Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment for the Breastfeeding Dyad: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Human milk is widely recognized as the optimal source of infant nutrition. While 83.9% of mothers initiate breastfeeding, only 46.3% exclusively breastfeed to 3 months. Common barriers include latch and suck difficulties, painful feeding, and breast infections or engorgement. Osteopathic manipulation, including osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) and therapy (OMTh), has been proposed as supportive intervention for breastfeeding challenges. RESEARCH AIM: This scoping review examines the current literature on OMT/OMTh in the breastfeeding dyad and identifies gaps to inform futu

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment for Postconcussive Symptoms: A Case Report.

Concussions are a common form of mild traumatic brain injury characterized by a transient alteration of cerebral function leading to a range of physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms. Postconcussive symptoms (PCSs) usually resolve in about a week but can persist in 10% to 15% of patients. If left untreated, PCS can profoundly affect a patient's life. The authors present a case of a previously healthy patient who dealt with residual headaches and anxiety for 10 months after a head injury. She was treated with osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), which helped resolve her headaches and

The Use of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment for a Case of Cervical Radiculopathy

Abstract Cervical radiculopathy is a clinical condition related to dysfunction of the cervical spinal nerve roots. Signs and symptoms include unilateral neck, shoulder, or arm pain; paresthesias of the arm, forearm or hand; diminished muscle tendon reflexes, sensory disturbances; and/or muscle weakness. Cervical radiculopathy is primarily a clinical diagnosis with patients reporting a varying degree of pain and/or neurologic dysfunction along a nerve root distribution. In addition to a thorough history, a detailed physical exam including muscle strength testing, deep tendon reflex testing and

The role of osteopathic manipulative treatment for dystonia: a literature review.

CONTEXT: Dystonia is a movement disorder that causes involuntary muscle contractions leading to abnormal movements and postures, such as twisting. Dystonia is the third most common movement disorder in the United States, with as many as 250,000 people affected. Because of its complexity, dystonia presents a significant challenge in terms of management and treatment. Despite limited research, osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) has been considered as an adjunctive treatment due to its inexpensive and noninvasive nature, as opposed to other modalities such as botulinum toxin injections, dee

The Role of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment in Osteoarthritis: A Scoping Review.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common joint disorders in the United States. As no whole body, curative treatment exists, conservative, often multimodal, treatment goals are used first with aims to decrease pain and improve function in daily life. This scoping review seeks to understand how incorporating osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) in the management of OA can affect patient outcomes, specifically pain and mobility. This was explored by searching CINAHL, EBSCO, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Ovid MEDLINE(R) databases on 11/18/2022. Search terms included: [("osteoarthr*") OR ("d

Osteopathic manipulative treatment in pudendal neuralgia: A case report.

Pudendal neuralgia is characterised by pain in the pudendal dermatome. It could be due to a stenosis of the pudendal canal, a compression along its pathway, or a pelvic trauma. Pudendal nerve entrapment (PNE) syndrome is frequently involved in pudendal neuralgia onset. This case report describes the osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) of a patient with functional PNE. A 40-year-old female presented with a 12-month history of intense pelvic pain resistant to 3 months of pharmacologic treatment that arose after three proctological surgeries. A perineal retracted painful scar was visible upo

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment for the Management of Adjacent Segment Pathology.

Adjacent segment pathology is an adverse effect of spinal fusion that precipitates accelerated spinal degenerative changes at vertebral segments contiguous with the fused vertebrae. The accelerated degeneration related to ASP can be challenging to manage, as it can lead to conditions such as radiculopathy and can create the need for reoperation. In the present case, a 50-year-old woman with a previous spinal fusion presented with a 1-year history of progressive low back pain, lumbar radiculopathy, and sciatica. Osteopathic manipulative treatment was used to manage her pain, and the patient rep

Osteopathic manipulative treatment for postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is associated with many symptoms including orthostatic intolerance, fatigue, palpitations, and cognitive dysfunction. Treatment, which typically consists of exercise, increased dietary sodium and fluids, compression garments, and medications for orthostatic intolerance, frequently produces unsatisfactory results. The authors report the case of a 26-year-old woman who presented with a 6-year history of severe fatigue, orthostatic intolerance, heat intolerance, cognitive dysfunction, and diffuse pain. She had previously injured her jaw on an obsta

Osteopathic manipulative treatment applications for the emergency department patient.

The emergency department (ED) setting offers osteopathic physicians multiple opportunities to provide osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) as either the primary therapy or as an adjunct to the intervention. In doing so, osteopathic physicians can decrease or eliminate the morbidity and symptoms associated with protracted dysfunction. Low back pain, chest pain, torticollis, asthma, and sinusitis are some of the illnesses in which OMT should be implemented as part of the management plan, note the authors. They provide a guide to the general usage of OMT when the aforementioned illnesses pres

Osteopathic Manipulation in the Management of Chronic Pain: Current Perspectives.

Chronic pain is a common condition that often interferes with work or other activities. Guidelines support the use of non-pharmacological treatments, such as spinal manipulation, in patients with chronic pain. Osteopathic physicians in the United States are uniquely positioned to manage chronic pain because their professional philosophy embraces the biopsychosocial model and they are trained in the use of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to complement conventional medical care. This narrative review provides current perspectives on the osteopathic approach to chronic pain management, i

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment and the Management of Headaches: A Scoping Review.

Headaches have been studied and treated since nearly 7,000 BC because of their significant global impact. Current headache treatment modalities are various and have a wide variety of targets, but medications are the most common. Since conventional medical treatments have several side effects, alternative remedies such as osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) should be considered. OMT can assist in the management of various health conditions, such as low back pain, neck pain, and headaches. The purpose of this scoping review is to evaluate recent findings regarding the efficacy of OMT modali

Effect of Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy on Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

CONTEXT: Traditional management options for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) have produced low remission rates. As a result, the medical community has turned to complementary and alternative medicine for adjunctive treatment. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of adjunctive osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMTh; manipulative care provided by foreign-trained osteopaths) in individuals with GAD. METHODS: This open-label, nonrandomized, black-box study took place at a tertiary care mental health clinic in Toronto, Canada. Adult outpatient participants aged 18 to 65 years with a primary d

Osteopathic manipulative treatment in chronic coccydynia: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Coccydynia is a disorder associated with pain/discomfort at the base of the spine. The role of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) in chronic coccydynia as well as for low back pain (LBP) and radicular pain (RP) associated with coccydynia, has not previously been investigated. This study seeks to analyse the effects of OMT on chronic coccydynia compared to physical therapy and pharmacological treatment (PTPT). The secondary objective is to analyse the effect of OMT on LBP and RP associated with coccydynia. METHODS: Clinical records of 50 patients were examined. These patients

Osteopathic manipulative treatment as a useful adjunctive tool for pneumonia.

Pneumonia, the inflammatory state of lung tissue primarily due to microbial infection, claimed 52,306 lives in the United States in 2007 (1) and resulted in the hospitalization of 1.1 million patients (2). With an average length of in-patient hospital stay of five days (2), pneumonia and influenza comprise significant financial burden costing the United States $40.2 billion in 2005 (3). Under the current Infectious Disease Society of America/American Thoracic Society guidelines, standard-of-care recommendations include the rapid administration of an appropriate antibiotic regiment, fluid repla
