Manual Lymphatic Drainage in Blood Circulation of Upper Limb With Lymphedema After Breast Cancer Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess blood flow after manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) in women who had received surgery for breast cancer and had post-axillary lymphadenectomy lymphedema. METHODS: Sixteen volunteers (mean age 64 ± 11.44 years) were divided into 2 groups. Those in group 1 received MLD without upper limb elevation, and those in group 2 received MLD with elevation of 30° of the upper limb. Blood flow velocity of the brachial vein and artery were measured using Doppler ultrasound before, immediately after, and 30 minutes after MLD, with and without 30° of upper limb

Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders Risk Assessment during Manual Lymphatic Drainage with Compressive Bands among Physiotherapists.

BACKGROUND: Complete decongestive therapy is the standard treatment for lymphedema. Manual lymphatic drainage and short-stretch multilayer compression bandaging are two daily stages of complete decongestive therapy during which physiotherapists work with patients. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the risks of musculoskeletal disorders to which physiotherapists are exposed during these two phases. METHOD: Five physiotherapists performed five 20 min manual lymphatic drainages, followed by the compression bandaging phase. From the video recordings, 8477 postures defined by 13 join

Combination of manual lymphatic drainage and Kinesio taping for treating pigmented villonodular synovitis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a benign proliferative disorder that affects the synovial joints, bursae, and tendon sheaths. To date, few studies have reported on the treatment of postoperative pain and edema in patients with PVNS. Herein, we present the case of a woman who developed pain and edema in the left lower limb 1 wk after synovectomy and arthroscopic partial meniscectomy and was unable to walk due to limited flexion and extension of the left knee. CASE SUMMARY: A 32-year-old woman underwent synovectomy and arthroscopic partial meniscectomy successively and wa

Short-term Effect and Acceptability of Manual Lymphatic Drainage for Paediatric Limb Lymphoedema: A Prospective Study.

Paediatric lymphoedema (LE) is a rare condition, for which there is little data available regarding treatments. The aim of this study was to assess the short-term effect and acceptability of a 30-min session of manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) in children with well-documented LE of the lower limbs. Fifteen children were included (8 males; median age 11 years). Comparison of the sum of circumference values for the whole limb before and after MLD revealed a slight, but significant, reduction (from a median of 289.8 to 285.5 cm, p = 0.024), but the limb volumes did not decrease significantly (from

Dercum's disease (Lipomatosis dolorosa): successful therapy with pregabalin and manual lymphatic drainage and a current overview.

Dercum's disease which is also termed lipomatosis dolorosa is a rare and relatively unknown disease. In this entity the upper arms, elbows, stomach wall, buttocks, thighs and knees are predominantly affected showing painful subcutaneous adipose tissue deposits. In addition severe hyperalgesia can be triggered by light pressure and touch. Analgesic and/or nonsteroidal antirheumatic drugs have usually only a minor or no effect. Here, we report a patient with Dercum's disease who was successfully treated with pregabalin and manual lymphatic drainage, and present a current overview of the literatu

Efficacy of Manual Lymphatic Drainage in Reducing Postoperative Complications After Cosmetic Plastic Surgery: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Cosmetic plastic surgical procedures, such as liposuction and abdominoplasty, often disrupt the lymphatic system, leading to complications, including swelling, pain, fibrosis, and seromas. Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is commonly recommended postoperatively to enhance lymphatic flow and accelerate healing. However, evidence regarding its efficacy remains inconsistent, particularly in cosmetic procedures. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of MLD in reducing postoperative swelling, pain, fibrosis, seromas, and recovery time compared with standard care following cosmeti

Therapist versus Machine-Immediate Effects of Manual versus Mechanical Lymphatic Drainage in Patients with Secondary Lymphedema.

Background: Complex decongestive therapy (CDT) is the standard and basic therapy for lymphedema. The central component of CDT is manual lymphatic drainage (MLD). In addition to CDT, other measures such as intermittent pneumatic compression therapy (IPCT) (active compression machine therapy) are available. In this prospective research study, the objective and subjective effects of MLD and IPCT on lymphedema of the lower extremity were investigated and both therapies were directly compared. Furthermore, the patients' body mass index (BMI) and stage of lymphedema were tested for their effect on t

Correlation between obesity and manual lymphatic drainage in Germany - a retrospective analysis from 2008 to 2016.

UNLABELLED: Backgrounds: Costs for manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) paid by the Statutory Health Insurances (SHI) have increased disproportionately in Germany in the last decade. There is no obvious reason that this increase is due to an increasing number of patients with lymph edema. We therefore assume that there are large numbers of patients with obesity and obesity-associated dependency syndrome who drive the cost of MLD and did a retrospective analysis of the correlation between hospitalization rates for lymph edema and obesity and MLD prescription rates in outpatients. PATIENTS AND METHO

Three-month work-related musculoskeletal disorders assessment during manual lymphatic drainage in physiotherapists using Generic Postures notion.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to quantify the postures and to assess the musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) risk in physiotherapists repeating a manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) over a three-month period. The underlying hypothesis was that there would be Generic Postures (GP) that would be repeated and could be used to more simply describe repetitive and long-duration complex activities. METHODS: The posture of five physiotherapists performing five 20-min MLD at their workplace was captured by two cameras. From the recordings, the adopted postures were extracted every 5 s and quantified t

Effectiveness of manual lymphatic drainage in intensive phase I therapy of breast cancer-related lymphedema-a retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: The standard therapy for lymphedema of any origin is complex physical decongestive therapy (CDT). It comprises manual lymph drainage (MLD), compression therapy (CT), exercise therapy (ET), skincare, and patient education. Additionally, intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) can be applied. However, the contribution of MLD to decongestion is repeatedly questioned. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study re-analyzes a previous study during a 3-week decongestion period, comparing two different types of compression bandaging at the weekend. Bilateral Changes in Deep Tissue Environment After Manual Lymphatic Drainage in Patients with Breast Cancer Treatment-Related Lymphedema.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer treatment-related lymphedema (BCRL) arises from a mechanical insufficiency following cancer therapies. Early BCRL detection and personalized intervention require an improved understanding of the physiological processes that initiate lymphatic impairment. Here, internal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures of the tissue microenvironment were paired with clinical measures of tissue structure to test fundamental hypotheses regarding structural tissue and muscle changes after the commonly used therapeutic intervention of manual lymphatic drainage (MLD). METHODS AND
