Effects of atmospheric and manure surface conditions on H2 S emissions from an in-ground finisher hog manure slurry tank.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) emitted by livestock operations can be detrimental to human health. The storage of hog manure is a significant agricultural source of H2 S emissions. H2 S emissions from a ground-level Midwestern hog finisher manure tank were measured for 8-20 days each quarter over a 15-month period. After excluding 4 days with outlier emissions the mean daily emission was 1.89 g H2 S m-2 day-1 . Mean daily emission was 1.39 g H2 S m-2 day-1 when the slurry surface was liquid and 3.00 g H2 S m-2 day-1 when crusted. Emissions however were not significantly different whether the surface

Managing manure as a resource during livestock intensification.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)'s 2026 report, Drivers of supply and demand of terrestrial animal source food sets the stage for a growing manure problem. It forecasts rapid expansion and intensification of livestock production across lower-middle-income countries. The resulting increase in manure can become either a valuable resource within circular agriculture or a major source of pollution, depending on how it is collected, stored, treated and returned to land. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Recovered from Swine Manure.

Recently, concerns have been raised about the possibility of Acinetobacter baumannii transmission between animals and humans. So far, A. baumannii has been reported in animals with which people can come into contact. The presence of this pathogen in animal manure presents an equally important public health risk. In this study, we report the finding of two A. baumannii isolates in swine manure from a Croatian pig farm. Both isolates shared features with the widespread human clinical isolates: affiliation to the international clonal lineage 2 (ST-195), carbapenem, and extensive drug resistance a

Biochar-mediated sorption of antibiotics in pig manure.

Using manure contaminated with antibiotics as fertilizer is a primary source of soil pollution with antibiotics and concomitantly with antibiotic resistance genes (ARG). Bioavailable antibiotics trigger further ARG amplification during manure storage. Consequently it is aimed to facilitate the immobilization of antibiotics in manure. To this end, five biochars derived from pine cone (BCP), rice husk, sewage sludge, digestate and Miscanthus were tested as additional sorbents in liquid pig manure for sulfamethazine, ciprofloxacin, oxytetracycline and florfenicol. Non-linear sorption was best-fit

Removal and recovery of ammonia from chicken manure.

The feasibility of the conversion of organic nitrogen available in raw chicken manure (CM) into ammonia via hydrolysis and the removal of ammonia from anaerobically digested manure were evaluated in this study. Firstly, the hydrolysis experiments were performed and the effects of temperature, total solids (TS) content and retention time were investigated. The results showed that 90% of the organic nitrogen in CM can be converted into ammonia via biological hydrolysis within 3.6 days at 35 °C and 10-12.5% TS content. In addition to high ammonification efficiency, partial acidification of the CM

Diverse antibiotic resistance genes in dairy cow manure.

Application of manure from antibiotic-treated animals to crops facilitates the dissemination of antibiotic resistance determinants into the environment. However, our knowledge of the identity, diversity, and patterns of distribution of these antibiotic resistance determinants remains limited. We used a new combination of methods to examine the resistome of dairy cow manure, a common soil amendment. Metagenomic libraries constructed with DNA extracted from manure were screened for resistance to beta-lactams, phenicols, aminoglycosides, and tetracyclines. Functional screening of fosmid and small

[Anaerobic digestion of animal manure contaminated by tetracyclines].

Anaerobic digestion of pig manure spiked with tetracycline (TC) and chlortetracycline (CTC) and the degradation of the two antibiotics during the anaerobic digestion at 35 degrees C were investigated. The results indicate that propionate was the main volatile fatty acid produced during the anaerobic digestion followed by acetate. Compared with the CTC addition, TC + CTC addition showed obvious inhibitory effect on the hydrolysis and acidification of easily digestible organic components of pig manure. The cumulative methane production of TC, CTC, TC + CTC and CK2 during anaerobic digestion was

Enhanced removal of antibiotic resistance genes and human bacterial pathogens during anaerobic digestion of dairy manure via addition of manure biochar.

In this study, the response of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile gene elements (intI1), and human bacterial pathogens (HBPs) to addition of manure biochar (1-10 g/L) was studied in anaerobic digestion (AD) at 20-55 °C for treating dairy manure. Twelve ARGs comprising five tetracycline resistance genes, two sulfonamide resistance genes, two macrolide resistance genes, three β-lactam antibiotic resistance genes, and intI1 were analyzed by quantitative PCR. High-throughput sequencing data were matched against a database of putative 538 HBPs. Significant removal of ARGs (except for tetO a

Persistence of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis and other zoonotic pathogens during simulated composting, manure packing, and liquid storage of dairy manure.

Livestock manures contain numerous microorganisms which can infect humans and/or animals, such as Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., and Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Mycobacterium paratuberculosis). The effects of commonly used manure treatments on the persistence of these pathogens have rarely been compared. The objective of this study was to compare the persistence of artificially inoculated M. paratuberculosis, as well as other naturally occurring pathogens, during the treatment of dairy manure under conditions that simulate three commonly use

Integrated process for anaerobically digested swine manure treatment.

An integrated three-step process was proposed for the treatment of the anaerobically digested swine manure (ADSM). The flocculation and struvite precipitation were used as the pre-treatment to remove the particles and reduce phosphorus to balance the condition for the algae growth. In the biological step, the 40% group (2.5× dilution) represented the optimal cultivation condition for the A + B co-cultivation, with the highest biomass concentration of 2.325 ± 0.16 g/L and performed well with nutrients removal (COD: 9770 ± 184 mg/L; TN: 235 ± 5.4 mg/L; TP: 25.3 ± 0.8 mg/L). 94.8% of the biomass

Fate of veterinary antibiotics during animal manure composting.

Antibiotics are widely used in animals for disease treatment and prevention. After use, these antibiotics end up in manure. Here we investigated the fate of veterinary antibiotics in animal manure during composting and their residues in manure-applied soils. The results showed that 64.7% of the detected veterinary antibiotics were removed after composting for 171 days, which mainly occurred at the thermophilic phase in the second week, followed by a long stable stage with limited variations. The removal rates for lincomycin, trimethoprim and the macrolides during the composting were >89.7%, wh

Screening ventilation strategies for confined-space manure storage facilities.

Fatalities associated with entry into on-farm confined-space manure storage facilities occur each year. The fatalities are due to asphyxiation or poisoning by exposure to high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide, methane, and carbon dioxide. Forced ventilation has been shown to be an effective way to reduce concentrations of noxious gases to levels that are safe for human entry into these storage facilities. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was used as an indicator gas to investigate the effectiveness of forced-air ventilation strategies for eliminating the toxic and oxygen-deficient atmosphere in confin

Anaerobic digestion of dairy manure with enhanced ammonia removal.

Poor ammonia-nitrogen removal in methanogenic anaerobic reactors digesting animal manure has been reported as an important disadvantage of anaerobic digestion (AD) in several studies. Development of anaerobic processes that are capable of producing reduced ammonia-nitrogen levels in their effluent is one of the areas where further research must be pursued if AD technology is to be made more effective and economically advantageous. One approach to removing ammonia from anaerobically digested effluents is the forced precipitation of magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate (MgNH4PO4 x 6H2O), com

Dynamic ammonium retention for nutrient separation from manure digestate.

Extensive nitrogen emissions with negative impact on nature and the environment urge effective valorization of manure and fractionation of nutrients to enable precision fertilization. Typically, manure is fed to a digester to produce biogas. The remaining digestate is then mechanically separated into a solid phosphorous-rich fraction and a liquid fraction containing both NH4+ and K. These ions are difficult to separate due to their very identical size and charge. We show that with smart tuning of the pH to control the NH3/NH4+ equilibrium, membranes can produce dedicated N and K-rich streams.

Copper Speciation Evolution in Swine Manure Induced by Pyrolysis.

Swine manures generally contain high levels of copper (Cu) resulting from its use as a growth promoter in feedstuff. Pyrolysis can further concentrate Cu whereas decrease its available fraction in swine manures. Here we investigated the speciation transformation of Cu and associated elements in swine manures induced by pyrolysis using multiple X-ray absorption spectroscopies. Results showed that over 82% of Cu existed as Cu(I)-S and Cu(I)-thiolate complexes in swine manures, which were transformed into stable Cu(I)2S during pyrolysis at a low temperature of 300 °C and partially oxidized and de

Subcritical water extraction of organic acids from chicken manure.

BACKGROUND: Chicken manure waste has a wide range of organic substances and mineral elements. This enriched source has stimulated great scientific interest in finding cleaner and more environmentally benign nutrient recovery options. This study aimed to determine an effective and eco-friendly method (i.e. subcritical water extraction) for processing fresh poultry manure. RESULTS: The high content of total organic carbon, including humic acids carbon and fulvic acids carbon, in extract was found to release under subcritical conditions. The organic compounds obtained by extraction with subcriti

[Concentrations of antibiotics in vegetables from manure-mended farm].

Sixteen typical antibiotics including four tetracyclines, four quinolones, and eight sulfonamides in vegetables from manure-amended farm were determined using the ultra high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and their health risks to human via the diet pathway was assessed. Most antibiotics were frequently detected in vegetable samples, with the detection rate from 11% to 90%. Concentrations of a single compound were mainly less than 5 microg x kg(-1) (D. W.), with the maximum of 23.88 microg x kg(-1) and the average of 0.91 microg x kg(-1), respectively. Norfloxacin,

Microwave treatment and struvite recovery potential of dairy manure.

Microwave digestion of liquid dairy manure was tested for the release of nutrients, such as orthophosphates, ammonia-nitrogen, magnesium, calcium and potassium, both with and without the aid of an oxidizing agent (hydrogen peroxide). The orthophosphate to total phosphorus ratio of the manure increased from 21% to greater than 80% with 5 minutes of microwave treatment. More than 36% of total chemical oxygen demand (t-COD) of the manure was reduced when microwave digestion was assisted with peroxide addition. In addition, the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) distribution shifted to simpler chain acid
