Purifying a corrosive hydrocarbon-degrading Shewanella indica from iron rust in oil-containing seawater: Understanding of microbial corrosion mechanisms based on whole genome analysis.

Corrosion products covering corroded steels immersed in oil-contaminated seawater for 465 days were analyzed for genomic, microbial activity, mineral, and morphology. Compared to 85 days of immersion, abundant chemolithotrophic bacteria predominantly attached to corroded steel, while the abundance of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria display a downward trend (like Alcanivorax dropped from 3.2% to 0%, Marinobacter from 1.3% to 0.99%). S. indica, isolated from the outer rust layer, exhibited crude oil emulsification and potential hydrocarbon-utilizing capacity (oil droplet diameter decreased from 1

Bile reflux alters the profile of the gastric mucosa microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Bile reflux can cause inflammation, gastric mucosa atrophy, and diseases such as stomach cancer. Alkaline bile flowing back into the stomach affects the intragastric environment and can alter the gastric bacterial community. We sought to identify the characteristics of the stomach mucosal microbiota in patients with bile reflux. METHODS: Gastric mucosal samples were collected from 52 and 40 chronic gastritis patients with and without bile reflux, respectively. The bacterial profile was determined using 16S rRNA gene analysis. RESULTS: In the absence of H. pylori infection, the ri

Prevalence of Heterotrophic Methylmercury Detoxifying Bacteria across Oceanic Regions.

Microbial reduction of inorganic divalent mercury (Hg2+) and methylmercury (MeHg) demethylation is performed by the mer operon, specifically by merA and merB genes, respectively, but little is known about the mercury tolerance capacity of marine microorganisms and its prevalence in the ocean. Here, combining culture-dependent analyses with metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data, we show that marine bacteria that encode mer genes are widespread and active in the global ocean. We explored the distribution of these genes in 290 marine heterotrophic bacteria (Alteromonas and Marinobacter spp.) is

Unlocking metabolic suppression in Acinetobacter baumannii with synergistic N-P-surfactant to enable petroleum degradation in saline soils.

Addressing the urgent need for remediation of petroleum-contaminated saline-alkaline soils, this study developed a synergistic system (NTQ) integrating the chemical surfactant Tween 80, ammonium nitrogen, phosphorus, and exogenous Acinetobacter baumannii. The NTQ treatment achieved highly efficient petroleum hydrocarbon degradation of 61.2 % within 40 days, significantly outperforming individual remediation strategies and other combined approaches. Mechanistic analysis revealed that microbial metabolism in saline-alkaline soil was severely constrained by (p)ppGpp‑mediated inhibition of nitroge

Plasmid-Mediated Quinolone Resistance (PMQR) Genes and Class 1 Integrons in Quinolone-Resistant Marine Bacteria and Clinical Isolates of Escherichia coli from an Aquacultural Area.

Antimicrobial usage in aquaculture selects for antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms in the marine environment. The relevance of this selection to terrestrial animal and human health is unclear. Quinolone-resistance genes qnrA, qnrB, and qnrS were chromosomally located in four randomly chosen quinolone-resistant marine bacteria isolated from an aquacultural area with heavy quinolone usage. In quinolone-resistant uropathogenic clinical isolates of Escherichia coli from a coastal area bordering the same aquacultural region, qnrA was chromosomally located in two E. coli isolates, while qnrB and

Microbial-induced MnO2 precipitation in a carbonate coastal aquifer.

A study was carried out to identify biogeochemical reactions along a transect of a coastal dolomitic aquifer. In this transect, the physicochemical parameters of the groundwater as well as the microbial composition of samples taken at different depths and salinities were measured. Many of the dissolved ions measured in the groundwater follow a pattern that reflects the distribution of the water masses (fresh, interface and salt) in the aquifer, while others such as Ca and Mg ions deviate from this trend by identifying the zones of maximum dissolution of the carbonate matrix. The concentrations

Antibiotic resistance genes allied to the pelagic sediment microbiome in the Gulf of Khambhat and Arabian Sea.

Antibiotics have been widely spread in the environments, imposing profound stress on the resistome of the residing microbes. Marine microbiomes are well established large reservoirs of novel antibiotics and corresponding resistance genes. The Gulf of Khambhat is known for its extreme tides and complex sedimentation process. We performed high throughput sequencing and applied bioinformatics techniques on pelagic sediment microbiome across four coordinates of the Gulf of Khambhat to assess the marine resistome, its corresponding bacterial community and compared with the open Arabian Sea sample.

Microbial Diversity and Hydrocarbon-Oxidizing Bacteria in Coastal Waters and Sands Contaminated by the Fuel Oil Spill in the Black Sea.

In 2024, an accident involving two tankers in the Kerch Strait resulted in the release of approximately 2400 tons of fuel oil into the Black Sea, causing significant contamination of seawater and the coastal zone. This study presents the first microbiological and molecular-ecological assessment of prokaryotic community composition and hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria (HOB) in coastal seawater and sand near Anapa (Russian Federation) following the spill. The taxonomic composition of nine samples was analyzed using high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes (V3-V4 regions), identifying Bacteria

Effects of arsenic and trace metals on bacterial denitrification process from estuarine sediments and associated nitrous oxide emission.

Coastal ecosystems currently face significant challenges due to nutrient enrichment and trace metal contamination. However, the effects of arsenic (As) and other trace metals (copper, lead, zinc, cadmium, mercury) on denitrification processes and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in estuarine sediments remain poorly understood. Here, we examined the influence of As and other trace metals on denitrification and N2O emissions in a single denitrifying strain, Marinobacter sp. MSD-1, isolated from metal-contaminated estuarine sediments based on its As(III)-oxidizing and denitrifying abilities and func

Aerobic degradation of ketoprofen by marine consortia: Fenton-like reaction and degradation pathway.

Ketoprofen (KTP) as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug has been detected in coastal environment due to its wide usage. However, little information is available about the fate of KTP in marine environment. In the present study, the aerobic degradation of 20 mg L-1 KTP using the enriched marine consortia was investigated. Results showed that CA consortium cultured with casamino acids exhibited a higher KTP-degrading ability than those cultured with glucose, yeast extract and mixed vitamins. During CA consortium-mediated degradation of KTP, additional casamino acids resulted in the production

High through-put sequencing analysis of changes in oral flora in rats before and after zoledronate administration.

The aim of this study was to compare the changes in the oral flora of Sprague-Dawley rats before intraperitoneal injection of zoledronic acid, 6 weeks and 12 weeks after injection. Clinically, some antibiotics effectively treat patients with medicine-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ), but the effect of broad-spectrum antibiotics for osteomyelitis of the jaw is not obvious. We therefore speculated that MRONJ may have some dominant bacteria. We used 12 healthy rats for the experiment. One rat was used for haematoxylin and eosin staining, three were used for gene analysis, three for signa

Effect of Thermophilic Nitrate Reduction on Sulfide Production in High Temperature Oil Reservoir Samples.

Oil fields can experience souring, the reduction of sulfate to sulfide by sulfate-reducing microorganisms. At the Terra Nova oil field near Canada's east coast, with a reservoir temperature of 95°C, souring was indicated by increased hydrogen sulfide in produced waters (PW). Microbial community analysis by 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed the hyperthermophilic sulfate-reducing archaeon Archaeoglobus in Terra Nova PWs. Growth enrichments in sulfate-containing media at 55-70°C with lactate or volatile fatty acids yielded the thermophilic sulfate-reducing bacterium (SRB) Desulfotomaculum. Enrichme

Diversity and functional genomic insights into antimicrobial resistance and aromatic hydrocarbon degradation genes in the Red Sea coast microbial community.

INTRODUCTION: The Red Sea is a unique oligotrophic marine ecosystem characterized by high salinity, elevated temperatures, and increasing anthropogenic pressures along its coastal regions. However, coastal sediment-associated microbial communities and their functional potential, particularly regarding antimicrobial resistance and aromatic compound degradation, remain insufficiently explored. METHODS: This study investigated bacterial diversity in coastal sediments from six sites along the eastern Red Sea using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and gained functional insights through genome seq

The Prokaryotic Community of Hypersaline Soils from the Odiel Saltmarshes: Culturomics Versus Metagenomics.

Hypersaline soils are poly-extreme terrestrial habitats characterized by high salinity, in some cases heavy-metal contamination, temperature fluctuations, and nutrient limitation. These conditions impose strong selective pressures, and many prokaryotic inhabitants still remain uncultured. Here, we conducted an extensive culturomics study of 549 isolates from the hypersaline soils of the Odiel Saltmarshes Natural Area (Southwest Spain) and compared the results with previously generated shotgun metagenomic datasets from the same environment in order to evaluate taxonomic composition, functional

Genome-resolved insights into hydrocarbon-transforming and nitrate-reducing microbial communities from deep petroleum reservoir cores of the Nashpa Oil Field, Pakistan.

INTRODUCTION: Microbial communities from deep subsurface petroleum reservoirs are adapted to hydrocarbon-rich, oxygen-limited, and physicochemically extreme environments. However, genome-resolved knowledge of petroleum reservoir microbiomes from Pakistan remains largely unexplored. METHODS: Shotgun metagenomic sequencing was used to investigate the functional and metabolic potential of microbial communities inhabiting deep subsurface petroleum reservoir cores from the Nashpa Oil Field, Pakistan, at depths of 3,770-4,315 m. Metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) were reconstructed and functionall

Metagenomic reconstruction of microbial genomes and biogeochemical pathways: insights into carbon and nitrogen flux dynamics in the eastern Arabian Sea.

The eastern Arabian Sea (EAS) experiences seasonal nutrient availability and productivity shifts driven by the Indian monsoon, influencing microbial contributions to biogeochemical cycles. This study explores carbon, nitrogen and sulfur cycling using metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from water samples collected at chlorophyll maxima (C-Max) depths during non-monsoon and monsoon seasons. A total of 49 high-quality MAGs were reconstructed from 12 metagenomic samples, including four novel lineages from the phyla Pseudomonadota and Bacteroidota. These MAGs revealed distinct seasonal shifts in m

Antimycobacterial activity of intertidal sediment-derived bacteria from False Bay, South Africa.

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, remains a global health burden due to the pathogen's ability to develop resistance to current treatment options. Consequently, drug discovery studies are essential for identifying new antimycobacterial agents with novel mechanisms of action. This study investigated the antimycobacterial activity of crude extracts derived from mixed culturable bacteria isolated from intertidal marine sediments. The bacterial diversity of the bioactive mixed cultures was characterized using 16S rRNA gene-based metagenomic analysis. Their pathogen-targeted

Nitrate treatment effects on bacterial community biofilm formed on carbon steel in produced water stirred tank bioreactor.

To better understand the impact of nitrate in Brazilian oil reservoirs under souring processes and corrosion, the goal of this study was to analyse the effect of nitrate on bacterial biofilms formed on carbon steel coupons using reactors containing produced water from a Brazilian oil platform. Three independent experiments were carried out (E1, E2 and E3) using the same experimental conditions and different incubation times (5, 45 and 80 days, respectively). In every experiment, two biofilm-reactors were operated: one was treated with continuous nitrate flow (N reactor), and the other was a co
