Himalayan Marmot (Marmota himalayana) Redistribution to High Latitudes under Climate Change.

Climate warming and human activities impact the expansion and contraction of species distribution. The Himalayan marmot (Marmota himalayana) is a unique mammal and an ecosystem engineer in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). This pest aggravates grassland degradation and is a carrier and transmitter of plagues. Therefore, exploring the future distribution of Himalayan marmots based on climate change and human activities is crucial for ecosystem management, biodiversity conservation, and public health safety. Here, a maximum entropy model was explored to forecast changes in the distribution and ce

Streptococcusmarmotae sp. nov., isolated from the respiratory tract of Marmota himalayana.

Five strains of a Gram-stain-positive, catalase-negative, α-haemolytic, coccus-shaped chain-forming organism were isolated separately from the lower respiratory tracts of five animals of Marmota himalayana in the endemic area of plague, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China. Based on their morphological characteristics, biochemical features and molecular phylogenetic studies, the strains were placed as representing a new member of the genus Streptococcus. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence studies indicated that strain HTS5T shared 96.5, 96.2 and 96.0 % similarity with Streptococcus gallinaceus CCU

Yellow-bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventris) preserve bone strength and microstructure during hibernation.

Reduced skeletal loading typically results in decreased bone strength and increased fracture risk for humans and many other animals. Previous studies have shown bears are able to prevent bone loss during the disuse that occurs during hibernation. Studies with smaller hibernators, which arouse intermittently during hibernation, show that they may lose bone at the microstructural level. These small hibernators, like bats and squirrels, do not utilize intracortical remodeling. However, slightly larger mammals like marmots do. In this study we examined the effects of hibernation on bone structural

Experimental Helicobacter marmotae infection in A/J mice causes enterohepatic disease.

Helicobacter marmotae has been identified in the inflamed livers of Eastern woodchucks (Marmota monax) infected with woodchuck hepatitis virus (WHV), as well as from the livers of WHV-negative woodchucks. Because the majority of WHV-positive woodchucks with hepatic tumours were culture or PCR positive for this helicobacter, and WHV-negative woodchucks with H. marmotae had hepatitis, the bacterium may have a role in tumour promotion related to chronic inflammation. In this study, the type strain of H. marmotae was inoculated intraperitoneally into 48 male and female A/J mice, a strain noted to

Symbiosis of a lytic bacteriophage and Yersinia pestis and characteristics of plague in Marmota himalayana.

Surveillance for animal plague was conducted in the Marmota himalayana plague focus of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from 2020 to 2023. A 22.89% positive rate of serum F1 antibody was detected in live-caught marmots, alongside a 43.40% incidence of Yersinia pestis isolation from marmot carcasses. Marmot carcasses infected with plague exhibited a significantly higher spleen-somatic index (P < 0.05). Twenty-one Y. pestis-specific phages were isolated, among which one Y. pestis lytic phage (AKS2022HT87GU_phi) was isolated from the bone marrow of a marmot carcass (no. AKS2022HT87) and was found to be

POPULATION DYNAMICS OF ENTERIC PARASITES IN THE ENDANGERED VANCOUVER ISLAND MARMOT (MARMOTA VANCOUVERENSIS).

Enteric parasites can have wide-ranging effects throughout an ecosystem, often driving coevolutionary and ecological processes. Parasites have long been overlooked in conservation efforts because of the negative impact inflicted on their hosts; however, parasites make up a significant component of Earth's biodiversity and host conservation efforts need to be parasite inclusive. The Vancouver Island marmot (VIM), Marmota vancouverensis, is an endangered alpine rodent endemic to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Captive-bred VIMs are released to augment the wild population, but their s

Nasal osteosarcoma and interstitial cell tumor in a Vancouver Island marmot (Marmota vancouverensis).

A 6-yr-old male Vancouver Island marmot (Marmota vancouverensis) presented for poor hibernation, weight loss, and symmetric trunk alopecia. An abdominal interstitial cell tumor was identified and surgically removed. Serum levels of estrogen were markedly elevated before surgery and decreased after tumor removal, indicating that the tumor had been functionally secretory. Nine months later, the marmot presented with respiratory stridor. A large boney nasal mass was identified radiographically and evaluated by computed tomography (CT) prior to surgical debulking. The marmot did not recover from a

Toxoplasmosis in a woodchuck (Marmota monax) and two American red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus).

Toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in a woodchuck (Marmota monax) and 2 American red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus). The woodchuck was euthanized by a wildlife rescue organization in New York after progressive clinical signs of head tilt, circling, and rapid weight loss. Necropsy examination revealed acute subdural hemorrhage over the right cerebral hemisphere. Histologic lesions included meningoencephalitis, myocarditis, and hepatitis. Protozoal cysts were present in affected and unaffected neuroparenchyma. The squirrels were found dead, emaciated, and moderately infested with fleas near a park

Serologic evidence of leptospirosis in woodchucks (Marmota monax) in central New York State.

Serum samples from 153 woodchucks (Marmota monax) from Tompkins County, New York, obtained in 1976 and 1977, were examined by plate agglutination tests for antibodies against five Leptospira antigens. Fourteen sera showed significant titers against either L. hardjo, L. icterohemorrhagiae and/or L. pomona. Reactions against L. hardjo were the most frequent. Woodchucks collected from two dairy farms with histories of bovine leptospirosis did not have a greater prevalence of antibodies than woodchucks collected from other locations. Each of two woodchucks experimentally-inoculated with L. hardjo

Characterization of Escherichia marmotae, a novel pathogen causing urinary tract infection in a dog.

Escherichia is one of the most studied bacterial genera and includes several clinically significant pathogenic species. Unique strategies have evolved in members of this genus to allow their survival within different niches. Although initially the Escherichia cryptic clades (CCs) I-VIII were identified as environmental bacteria, they have been found as commensals and opportunistic pathogens in animals and humans. Notably, members of the Escherichia CCs are commonly mistaken for E. coli when using standard microbiologic techniques for species identification. We used whole-genome sequencing to c

The effects of neurectomy and hibernation on bone properties and the endocannabinoid system in marmots (Marmota flaviventris).

Hibernators have adapted a physiological mechanism allowing them to undergo long periods of inactivity without experiencing bone loss. However, the biological mechanisms that prevent bone loss are unknown. Previous studies found meaningful changes, between active and hibernating marmots, in the endocannabinoid system of many tissues, including bone. Cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) have divergent localization in bone. CB1 is predominately found on sympathetic nerve terminals, while CB2 is more abundant on bone cells and their progenitors. This study aimed to determine the contribution of in

The parathyroid gland of the woodchuck (Marmota monax): a study of seasonal variations in the chief cells.

The ultrastructure of the parathyroid chief cell in the woodchuck, Marmota monax, was studied during the four seasons of the year. Spring chief cells have stacks of granular endoplasmic reticulum, prominent multiple Golgi zones and many clumped mitochondria. Summer cells resemble those seen in the spring but the mitochondria are associated with stacks of granular endoplasmic reticulum. Multiple areas of stacked granular endoplasmic reticulum characterize the fall chief cells. Their Golgi zones are large and are associated with many dense core secretory granules. Lipoid vacuoles are frequently

Causes of Mortality in Captive, Captive-Release, and Wild Vancouver Island Marmots (Marmota vancouverensis).

The Vancouver Island marmot (VIM; Marmota vancouverensis) is a critically endangered sciurid endemic to the subalpine meadows of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. In response to population declines in the 1980s and 1990s, an intensive conservation breeding and reintroduction program was initiated in 1997. This recovery effort has generated significant health-related data from the captive, captive-release, and wild VIM populations, including results from 153 ex situ and 820 in situ mortalities. There were important differences in surveillance between captive and free-ranging populatio

RNA virome of ticks and fleas infesting Marmota himalayana from the Qinghai-Tibet plateau.

BACKGROUND: Ticks and fleas are important vectors and hosts for various emergent human pathogens, such as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, and tick-borne encephalitis virus. In the Qinghai-Tibet plateau of China, Marmota himalayana (marmots) serves as the primary reservoir for Yersinia pestis, primarily transmitted by fleas. Due to their wide distribution and large population, marmots serve as important host animals for ticks and fleas to survive and reproduce on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. However, the spectrum of RNA viruses found in ti

Estrus, fertility, early embryo development, and autologous embryo transfer in laboratory woodchucks (Marmota monax).

Reproductive parameters were studied in female laboratory woodchucks over a 6-year period. The pregnancy rate in adult females after ad libitum exposure to a male (n = 643) was 72%; that after limited (4 to 8 h) exposure with video observations (n = 31) was only 37%. However, limited exposure resulted in a 75% ovulation rate, suggesting a problem with fertilization and not ovulation. The ovulation rate was 0% in the absence of mating (n = 10), suggesting that spontaneous ovulation is not the usual situation in this species. With ad libitum mating, fertility was greater (P < 0.05) for 2- to 4-y

Genetic characteristics of an amikacin-resistant Brucella abortus strain first isolated from Marmota himalayana.

Brucella spp. are facultative intracellular pathogens that can persistently colonize animal host cells and cause zoonotic brucellosis. Brucellosis affects public health and safety and even affects economic development. Our lab found that a Brucella strain isolated from Marmota himalayana exhibited amikacin resistance. To annotate and analyze the potential resistance genes in this strain, we utilized sequencing platforms in this study and cloned potential resistance genes. The findings showed that the isolated strain belonged to B. abortus biovar 1 and was similar to B. abortus 2308. The isolat

Genetic evidence for subspecies differentiation of the Himalayan marmot, Marmota himalayana, in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

The primary host of plague in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), China, is Marmota himalayana, which plays an essential role in the maintenance, transmission, and prevalence of plague. To achieve a more clear insight into the differentiation of M. himalayana, complete cytochrome b (cyt b) gene and 11 microsatellite loci were analyzed for a total of 423 individuals from 43 localities in the northeast of the QTP. Phylogenetic analyses with maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference methods showed that all derived haplotypes diverged into two primary well-supported monophyletic lineages, I and II, w

Using the Ground Squirrel (Marmota bobak) as an Animal Model to Assess Monkeypox Drug Efficacy.

In experiments to study the sensitivity of ground squirrels (Marmota bobak) to monkeypox virus (MPXV) at intranasal challenge, expressed pox-like clinical symptoms (hyperthermia, lymphadenitis, skin rash all over the body and mucous membranes and others) were observed 7-9 days post-infection. The 50% infective dose (ID50 ) of MPXV for these marmots determined by the presence of clinical signs of the disease was 2.2 log10 PFU. Some diseased marmots (about 40%) died 13-22 days post-infection, and the mortality rate was weakly dependent on MPXV infective dose. Lungs with trachea were primary targ

Species-level microbiota of ticks and fleas from Marmota himalayana in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

INTRODUCTION: Ticks and fleas, as blood-sucking arthropods, carry and transmit various zoonotic diseases. In the natural plague foci of China, monitoring of Yersinia pestis has been continuously conducted in Marmota himalayana and other host animals, whereas other pathogens carried by vectors are rarely concerned in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. METHODS: In this study, we investigated the microbiota of ticks and fleas sampling from M. himalayana in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China by metataxonomics combined with metagenomic methods. RESULTS: By metataxonomic approach based on full-length 16S rD
