Previous studies have described a range of Klossiella species parasitic in marsupial hosts. Klossiella quimrensis is the etiologic agent of renal coccidiosis in the peramelid marsupial hosts Isoodon obesulus and Perameles gunnii in Eastern Australia, but there is no previous report of klossiellosis in Western Australian peramelids. This study describes klossiellosis diagnosed by histology of renal tissue sections collected during necropsy of 20 Perameles bougainville between 2000 and 2005. Sporonts, sporoblasts, and macrogametes were identified within parasitophorous vacuoles of epithelial cel

The life cycle of Lagochilascaris sprenti, a species which occurs in the stomach of opossums (Didelphis virginiana) in Louisiana, was determined. The larva in the egg developed to the infective stage after eggs from the feces of infected animals were in culture about 30 days. When eggs containing infective larvae were fed to mice, the larvae hatched, penetrated the intestinal mucosa, migrated through the liver and lungs, and eventually reached the skeletal muscles where they became encapsulated. Larvae were also found encapsulated in the skeletal muscles of rats, gerbils, hamsters, monkeys, an

The gastrointestinal helminth parasites of 170 common wallaroos or euros, Osphranter robustus (Gould), collected from all mainland states in which the species occurs as well as the Northern Territory, are presented, including previously published data. A total of 65 species of helminths were encountered, including four species of anoplocephalid cestodes found in the bile ducts and small intestine, and 61 species of strongylid nematodes, all but two of which occurring in the stomach, and with the remainder occurring in the terminal ileum, caecum and colon. Among the mainland subspecies of O. ro

PURPOSE: This work provides a detailed morphological description of a previously identified but unnamed lineage inside Gnathostoma spp. from Mexico.
METHODS: Specimens of the four-eyed opossum Philader vossi were collected in Tlacotalpan, Veracruz, Mexico. Specimens were examined morphologically using both light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, we generate DNA sequences for the following loci: mitochondrial cox1 and nuclear 5.8S rRNA and ITS-2 and 28S rDNA.
RESULTS: The new species, Gnathostoma mexicanum n. sp., differs from G. turgidum Stossich, 1902, the common gn

Potoroxyuris keninupensis n.sp. (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) is described based on specimens recovered from the caecum and colon of two woylies, Bettongia penicillata (Marsupialia: Potoroidae) from Western Australia. Only one other species of Potoroxyuris has been described previously, Potoroxyuris potoroo (Johnston and Mawson, 1939) Mawson, 1964, from Potorous tridactylus. The new species is most easily differentiated from P. potoroo by the shape of the pharyngeal lobes. The pharyngeal lobes of P. keninupensis n. sp. are widest at the base while those of P. potoroo are widest at the tip. The genus P

Field captured specimens of Didelphis albiventris (Didelphimorphia: Didelphidae) from Formosa Province, Argentina, were analysed for possible infection with Babesia species. Whole blood samples of live-trapped D. albiventris were taken, genomic DNA was extracted and a Piroplasmida specific PCR assay targeting a fragment of the 18S rRNA gene was conducted. Positive PCR amplicon were sequenced and obtained DNA partial sequences were located in a phylogenetic context by constructing a maximum-likelihood tree. Two samples were positive and could be identified as Babesia species. Through phylogenet

Species of the Heterodoxus octoseriatus group infest five species, comprising eight chromosome races, of Petrogale in Queensland and northern New South Wales, Australia. The precise host and geographic ranges of the 11 species of the H. octoseriatus group were determined. Individual hosts and host populations were infested by single species of lice only. The geographic ranges of lice were discrete. In some cases the geographic ranges of louse species and their hosts were approximately congruent. In others they were completely incongruent and it was unclear which species originally infested whi

Trypanosoma cruzi is the etiologic agent of American trypanosomiasis and can infect humans and different species of domestic and wild animals. The marsupials are important wild reservoirs of T. cruzi, aiding in the maintenance of this agent in sylvatic and peri-domestic environments. The objective of this study was to report the parasitological and clinicopathological findings of a natural infection by T. cruzi in one specimen of Philander opossum that originated from the Brazilian Amazon. The animal was captured in a forest fragment near a rural community with reports of human Chagas disease.

The gastrointestinal tract of omnivores such as bandicoots (Marsupialia: Peramelidae) must be able to process foods as different as invertebrates, fungi and plant material. We studied the mechanisms involved in the utilisation by captive northern brown bandicoots (Isoodon macrourus) of insect larvae and milled lucerne (Medicago sativa) hay incorporated into a basal diet of a commercial small carnivore mix. Animals on the plant-basal mix digested less dry matter, energy, lipid, fibre and total nitrogen, but consumed 79% more dry matter than those on the insect-basal mix. Consequently intake of

Six female Honey possums were kept on a 15L:9D light regime to simulate a long daylength over summer. After seven weeks, three females (Group 2) were changed to a shorter daylength of 10L:14D, while the other three females (Group 1) were maintained on the long daylength. Faecal oestradiol-17beta and progestagen levels were measured during the experiment to detect any changes in reproductive rhythm, such as resumption of blastocyst development. Group 2 females were found to have very large and greatly expanded blastocysts with significantly higher levels of progestagens after the change to shor

Specimens of Cloacina artemis, C. expansa, C. hera, C. hermes, C. hestia, C. magnipapillata, C. obtusa and C. selene, which occur in both of the closely related species of grey kangaroos, Macropus fuliginosus and M. giganteus, were found to differ genetically based on sequence data derived from the internal transcribed spacers (ITS-1, ITS-2) of ribosomal DNA. The extent of differences varied from a single base pair in C. expansa, to 32 in C. hestia. In the case of C. hera, C. hestia and C. magnipapillata, separate genotypes were found in M. fuliginosus and M. giganteus. With C. artemis, C. exp

Three new species of the parasitic nematode genus Cloacina von Linstow, 1898 (Strongyloidea: Cloacininae) are described from the stomachs of wallaroos, Osphranter spp. (Marsupialia: Macropodidae), from northern Australia. Cloacina spearei n. sp. is described from O. robustus woodwardi (Thomas) and O. antilopinus (Gould) and is distinguished from congeners by the shape of the cephalic papillae, the shallow buccal capsule, the presence of an oesophageal denticle and the convoluted but non-recurrent vagina in the female. Cloacina longibursata n. sp. also from O. robustus woodwardi and O. antilopi

Development of primordial germ cells (PGCs: precursors to adult gametes) is a key process in vertebrate sexual differentiation. Marsupials are ideal to investigate this phenomenon because much of PGC migration and development unusually occurs postnatally in pouch young. However, investigation of the molecular dynamics underpinning PGC development is restricted to one marsupial model species: the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii). Given the reproductive diversity among clades, marsupial PGCs likely exhibit diversity in molecular patterns that could help uncover their developmental dynamics. Her

Paramoniezia suis Maplestone et Southwell, 1923 is redescribed from the type and only specimen, and is considered to be a genus inquirendum and species inquirenda, possibly based on a host misidentification. Paramoniezia phacochoeri Baylis, 1927 is redescribed from new material from Phacochoerus africanus (Gmelin) from South Africa and is transferred to Moniezia Blanchard. 1891 as M. phacochoeri (Baylis, 1927) comb. n. A redescription of M. mettami Baylis, 1934, also from Ph. africanus, establishes the independence of the two congeneric species parasitizing warthogs. A new genus, Phascolocestu

Leishmania parasites cause a group of diseases collectively known as leishmaniases. The primary hosts of Leishmania are sylvatic mammals of several orders (Rodentia, Marsupialia, Carnivora, etc.). Under certain circumstances, particularly in peridomestic and domestic transmission foci, synanthropic and domestic animals can act as source of infection for phlebotomine sand fly vectors. Dogs have long been implicated as the main domestic reservoirs of Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum, the aetiological agent of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis, and there exists an increasing trend to regard dogs as

Nematodes of the family Aspidoderidae (Nematoda: Heterakoidea) Freitas 1956 are widely distributed from Americas. The species of the genus Aspidodera Railliet and Henry 1912 are parasites of mammals of the orders Edentata, Marsupialia, and Rodentia. In the present work, Aspidodera raillieti (L. Travassos, Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 5(3):271-318, 1913), collected from the large intestine of Didelphis marsupialis (Mammalia: Didelphidae) from Valle del Cauca, Colombia, is redescribed. A clone that cross-hybridized with a full-length human cDNA PGK probe was isolated from a hill kangaroo (Macropus robustus: Marsupialia) lambda EMBL4 EcoRI genomic library. The clone was sequenced and demonstrated to be a pseudogene, with two deletions (one of 3 bases, the other 24 bases long), one single base insertion, and a nonsense mutation with respect to the functional human X-linked gene. It is flanked by terminal repeats in the 5' and 3' noncoding regions, but it has no 3' poly(A) remnant. The 3' untranslated region has a 34-bp sequence, with 29 bp homologous to the human 3' untranslat

The development of the shoulder girdle was studied in embryonic stages and a neonate of Crocidura russula using histological sections and 3-D reconstructions. Neonatal stages of Suncus etruscus and Mesocricetus auratus, both altricial placentals, were also studied. The earliest stage of C russula, in which the scapula is still partially blastematous, has already a supraspinous fossa. The dorsal portion of the scapular spine does not develop from the anterior margin of the scapula. Its mode of development varies among the placentals studied to date. In some it is completely appositional bone, i
