Mass media and risk factors for cancer: the under-representation of age.

BACKGROUND: Increasing age is a risk factor for developing cancer. Yet, older people commonly underestimate this risk, are less likely to be aware of the early symptoms, and are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced stage cancer. Mass media are a key influence on the public's understanding health issues, including cancer risk. This study investigates how news media have represented age and other risk factors in the most common cancers over time. METHODS: Eight hundred articles about the four most common cancers (breast, prostate, lung and colorectal) published within eight UK national new

[The epidemiology of eating disorders and the influence of mass media: a literature review].

The aim of this study was to provide an update of the epidemiology of eating disorders (anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa), focusing on incidence and prevalence as well as other factors as age and sex. We made a review of the existing literature in the matter in the last decades. Likewise, we made an extent evaluation of the hypothetical pathogenic impact that exerts mass media (television and printed mass media) in these pathologies. We found an evident increase in incidence as well as prevalence of these disorders though it's far from being considered epidemic. We also found an undeniable

Measured mass transfer coefficients in porous media using specific interfacial area.

Bulk and intrinsic mass transfer processes across interfaces between nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) and water were studied in water-saturated columns. Columns packed with different grain sizes of sand were used to create various NAPL-water interfacial areas along with different NAPL saturations. The intrinsic mass transfer coefficients were estimated from the bulk mass transfer coefficients, and the specific interfacial areas were measured using tracer studies. The bulk mass transfer coefficients increased with increasing NAPL-water specific interfacial area as well as NAPL saturation and po

The mass murderer history: modern classifications, sociodemographic and psychopathological characteristics, suicidal dimensions, and media contagion of mass murders.

Multicide and other mass killings are sufficiently dramatic to excite great interest from clinicians, criminologists and behavioral scientists. This paper revisits the history of the mass murderer, an entity that has progressively distinguished itself from the serial killer. The functional difference between mass and serial homicide is quite obvious, particularly in setting, time, victim status and modus operandi. Classification of these acts requires a number of parameters. The causes of mass murders are multiple and complex: although they rarely seem to be related to psychotic mental patholo

Mass flows of X-ray contrast media and cytostatics in hospital wastewater.

Little is known about the significance of hospitals as point sources for emission of organic micropollutants into the aquatic environment. A mass flow analysis of pharmaceuticals and diagnostics used in hospitals was performed on the site of a representative Swiss cantonal hospital. Specifically, we analyzed the consumption of iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM) and cytostatics in their corresponding medical applications of radiology and oncology, respectively, and their discharge into hospital wastewater and eventually into the wastewater of the municipal wastewater treatment plant. Emission

[Alert for meningitis in Palermo? Successful strategies to counteract the impact of mass media].

Following two invasive meningococcal disease cases among twenties, general population overloaded vaccination Units of the Palermo's District during summer 2016. Sicilian Health Authorities adopted several public health strategies including: a) active meningococcal vaccination free of charge for people from 18 up to 30 years of age, b) information in crowded places and rapid communication by media. An increase in anti-meningococcal vaccination doses administered (+868%) as well as in anti-dTp and HPV vaccination (+41% and +8%, respectively) due to a further catch-up was observed.

A content analysis of mass media sources in relation to the MMR vaccine scare.

In light of the mass media coverage that the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine received as a result of questions raised about its safety, a content analysis of mass media articles about the MMR vaccine was undertaken. The analysis examined 227 articles published in five different information sources in a 2 month period. The analysis looked at 94 content-based variables and the key attributes of these articles including word count and date of publication. Descriptive and analytical statistics relating to both article content and format were produced. The analysis showed that the content

The influence of the mass media on delusions: The Russia-Ukraine war as a delusional topic.

We present the case of a 42-year-old female patient with a diagnosis of schizophrenia who, 24 hours after the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, developed a delirium on this topic. This case report illustrates how current news is processed by psychotic patients. Relevant current events can be incorporated into delusional themes due to the intensity and immediacy of information by the media.

Connecting the Dots: Mass Media, Maternal Exposure, and Child Health Outcomes in Benin.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal exposure to mass media has been linked to various health outcomes, but its influence on childhood morbidity and mortality in Benin remains unexplored. This study examines the relationship between maternal mass media exposure and two critical child health indicators: morbidity and mortality. METHODS: This secondary analysis of the 2017/2018 Benin Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) included 13,851 women. Childhood morbidity (fever, cough, and diarrhea) and mortality were analyzed as outcomes. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression and Cox regression models wer

Usefulness of Chromogenic Media in the Identification of Candida spp. Yeasts Compared to Mass Spectrometry.

Yeasts of the Candida genus are part of the normal human microbiota but can cause infections (candidiasis) under certain conditions. While Candida albicans remains the most common etiological agent, the prevalence of non-albicans Candida species-such as C. glabrata, C. tropicalis, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis, C. kefyr, C. lusitaniae, and the emerging multidrug-resistant C. auris-has been increasing. Effective treatment of candidiasis requires rapid and accurate identification of the causative species, particularly due to species-specific antifungal agent resistance patterns. The aim of this stu

Overlooking the Obvious: Communication of Efficacy by the Mass Media During the Ebola Crisis in Liberia.

The role of mass media during a public health crisis is an ineluctable part of providing the public with critical information rapidly, particularly messages about self- and response efficacy. However, little is known about the role local news media play in disseminating efficacy information during infectious disease outbreaks. Here, we use the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Liberia as a case to explore this question. We content analyzed newspaper and radio messages disseminated between March 2014 and March 2015, during the midst of the outbreak. Results show that both radio programs and newspaper arti
