Mastocytosis is a rare disease which occurs in both children and adults, and it can manifest as a solitary or multiple skin lesions. Both can cause cutaneous or systemic symptoms. Because of the heterogeneity of clinical presentation of mastocytosis and its rare prevalence, it can be hard to suspect the mastocytosis at the first time. Most solitary mastocytomas are about 1-5 cm in diameter and have features of brownish-yellow, minimally elevated plaques with a smooth shiny surface. This article presents a case of solitary mastocytoma which occurred in neonate and that we treated through surgic

BACKGROUND: Mastocytosis is a heterogeneous group of rare disorders characterized by the accumulation of clonal mast cells in organs such as the skin and bone marrow. The diagnosis of cutaneous mastocytosis (CM) is based on clinical findings, positive Darier's sign, and histopathology, if necessary.
METHODS: Medical records of 86 children with CM diagnosed during a 35-year long period were reviewed. Most patients (93%) developed CM during the first year of life (median age 3 months). Clinical features at presentation and during the follow-up period were analyzed. Baseline serum tryptase level

Mastocytosis is a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by abnormal proliferation and accumulation of mast cells in one or more organs. Cutaneous mastocytosis (CM) is the most common form in children, with solitary mastocytoma representing a distinct subtype. Mastocytomas are generally benign, present at birth or in early infancy, and may manifest as pigmented macules, nodules, or plaques, occasionally associated with flushing or urtication. Histopathological confirmation is essential in atypical presentations. We report a 4.5-month-old infant presenting with a lesion on the metacarpo

Mastocytosis is a term used to describe a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by clonal proliferation of mast cells in different organs. The organ most often affected is the skin. The World Health Organization classifies cutaneous mastocytosis into mastocytoma, maculopapular cutaneous mastocytosis, and diffuse mastocytosis. The systemic variants in this classification are as follows: indolent systemic mastocytosis (SM), aggressive SM, SM with an associated clonal hematological non-mast cell lineage disease, mast cell leukemia, mast cell sarcoma, and extracutaneous mastocytoma. Solitary mastocytomas are infiltrates of mast cells in the upper corium, appearing at any side of the body as brownish-reddish plaques in the first months of life. Their course is benign with a spontaneous regression in most cases. A 5-month-old boy presented a 5 x 3 cm sized brownish-yellow plaque on the back of his right hand. His parents reported repeated episodes of swelling and blistering of the skin lesion as well as recurrent systemic flush-reactions. General laboratory parameters were without pathological findings including a normal serum tryptase (5.5 microg/L). A few minutes after ru

Cutaneous mastocytosis can be divided into 4 different clinical variants--urticaria pigmentosa, solitary mastocytoma, diffuse cutaneous mastocytosis, and telangiectasia macularis eruptiva perstans. Skin findings are often accompanied by symptoms secondary to mast cell release of mediators. These symptoms can be both localized to the skin lesion and systemic because of the release of mediators into the bloodstream. The majority of pediatric cases of cutaneous mastocytosis show a good prognosis with gradual resolution of both symptoms and skin lesions. This article will review each of the 4 clin

Mast cell tumors in nondomestic felids are rarely reported and their biological characteristics are not well described. A retrospective review of the pathology records of 52 zoo-housed cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) identified five cases of mast cell tumor, involving four closely related individuals. The age at initial presentation varied from 14 mo to 6 yr. Four cases presented as solitary or multiple cutaneous masses that were mostly slow growing, up to 20 mm diameter, and predominantly nonulcerated. The diagnosis was made by fine needle aspiration cytology of a lesion in one case and by excisi

BACKGROUND: Mastocytosis presents as a focal or generalized increase of mast cells, particularly in the skin, but also in other organs. Activating mutations of KIT (formerly c-kit), the receptor of the mast cell growth factor stem cell factor (SCF), appear to play a key role in the pathogenesis of sporadic adult onset mastocytosis. However, these mutations are not present in childhood-onset and familial mastocytosis and also fail to explain the heterogeneity of adult-onset disease. Other factors such as prolonged survival of mast cells may therefore participate in causing and modulating the pa

Solitary mastocytoma (mast cell naevus) of the skin represents a relatively rare dermal tumour. Its occurrence on the lower eyelid is exceptional. We report the case of a 4 month old male infant who exhibited a firm, yellowish nodule (1 cm in maximum diameter) on the lower lid of the right eye from birth. Histologically, the tumour consisted of strongly metachromatic tissue mast cells (TMC) infiltrating the whole dermis, the adjacent subcutaneous tissue and the lid muscle. Since comparable skin lesions in other sites were not observed, a diagnosis of solitary mastocytoma was made. Immunocytolo

CBA mice were immunized by painting the skin with the contact sensitizing agent `oxazolone'. The draining lymph nodes were taken at 4 days and mixed with 51Cr-labelled mastocytoma tumour cells. Cytotoxic killing was assessed by the release of 51Cr. Little killing occurred in the absence of phytohaemagglutinin. However, immunized but not normal lymph node cells killed the mastocytoma cells providing phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) was present during the killing reaction. Analysis by the `one hit' hypothesis suggested that up to 14 per cent of the lymphocytes in immunized lymph nodes were effector or

The physical examination of a 9 1/2 months old infant with repeated attacks of flushing, hypotonia and tachycardia, beginning at the age of 3 months revealed two indurated, brown coloured skin areas, each with a diameter of 2 cm, situated on the left side of the back and on the left buttock, respectively. The histological findings proved the clinically suspected diagnosis of a "solitary mastocytoma". No more generalised symptoms were observed after the surgical removal of the skin lesions during a follow up period of 24 months until today.

The term 'mastocytosis' denotes a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by abnormal growth and accumulation of mast cells (MC) in one or more organ systems. Over the last 20 years, there has been an evolution in accepted classification systems for this disease. In light of such developments and novel useful markers, it seems appropriate now to re-evaluate and update the classification of mastocytosis. Here, we propose criteria to delineate categories of mastocytosis together with an updated consensus classification system. In this proposal, the diagnosis cutaneous mastocytosis (CM) is

We report a case of solitary mastocytoma in a child which was successfully treated with a topical steroid of moderate potency. The patient was an 18-month-old girl who presented with localized oval shape yellowish to hyperpigmented lesion on the medial aspect of her right forearm noticed accidentally by the parents since the age of 6 months. The lesion was observed to get urticated mainly after bathing, toweling, and scratching of the area, associated with reddening and itching confined to the lesion (Figure 1). No other area of the body was affected with any similar lesion. Examination of the

Mastocytoses are a heterogeneous group of disorders of unknown etiology characterised by the accumulation of mast cells, particularly in the skin. Mastocytosis may be limited to the skin or involve internal organs, especially those playing the lymphoreticular function. We present a case of 9-year-old girl, with a history of maculopapules at the age of two, followed by yellow-brownish, nodular skin lesions. The skin lesions, located on the trunk, neck and face were accompanied by pruritus. The histopathological examination of the node confirmed the diagnosis of mastocytoma. A bone scintigram sh
