T cell behavior at the maternal-fetal interface.

Understanding the function of T cells at the maternal-fetal interface remains one of the most difficult problems in reproductive immunology. A great deal of work over the last two decades has led to the view that the T cells that populate the decidua have important roles in both normal and pathological pregnancies, but the exact nature of these roles has remained unclear. Indeed, the old assumption that decidual T cells are uniformly threatening to fetal survival because the placenta is fundamentally an 'allograft' has given way to the idea that different T cell subsets contribute in different

The biopsychology of maternal behavior in nonhuman mammals.

The term "maternal behavior," when applied to nonhuman mammals, includes the behaviors exhibited in preparation for the arrival of newborn, in the care and protection of the newly arrived young, and in the weaning of those young, and represents a complex predictable pattern that is often regarded as a single, comprehensive, species-specific phenomenon. Although the delivering first-time mammalian mother is immediately and appropriately maternal, a "virgin" with no prior exposure to young does not show immediate and appropriate behavior toward foster young. Nevertheless, the virgin female, and

Cocaine transiently impairs maternal behavior in the rat.

This paradigm distinguished between two hypotheses not previously directly addressed. Do repeated exposures to cocaine at critical times during pregnancy, when the neural mechanisms that support maternal behavior are being read, alter some fundamental neural underpinning of maternal behavior in rats? Alternatively, does cocaine alter maternal behavior only when circulating? During the 4 hr after cocaine injection (20 or 40 mg/kg), there were significant deficits in maternal behavior. In contrast, 16 hr after cocaine injection, drug-injected females, in which plasma cocaine had fallen to nondet

Spontaneous fetal behavior after maternal exposure to ethanol.

Acute and chronic intubations of ethanol to pregnant rats produced changes in spontaneous fetal behavior four hours later. Fetuses from mothers in intermediate alcohol groups (4 and 6 g/kg) were substantially less active than controls (0 g/kg), but fetuses from low (2 g/kg) and high (8 g/kg) alcohol groups showed little indication of behavioral suppression. Circulating levels of alcohol in maternal blood, fetal homogenate and amniotic fluid at the time fetuses were observed confirmed that fetuses were exposed to alcohol in utero, but the measured concentrations of alcohol were not predictive o

Effects of maternal epidural anesthesia on neonatal behavior.

Lidocaine may be expected to have a greater effect on neonatal neurobehavior than chloroprocaine because of differences in pharmacology. However, recent reports have been contradictory. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (BNBAS) score would be lower when lidocaine is used as a local anesthetic than when chloroprocaine is used, and that any effects would be related to cord blood drug levels. Ninety-nine healthy mother/infant pairs were studied. Clinical characteristics, pharmacological data, and BNBAS scores we

Acute Lipopolysaccharide Switches the Selection of Maternal Behavior to Predatory Behavior in Female Rats.

OBJECTIVES: A common problem during the postpartum period and during lactation is being affected by infection due to Gram-negative bacteria. In this situation, a sick mother needs to choose between caring for her pups or the need for survival. This study analyzed the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced sickness behavior on selection between maternal behavior (MB) and predatory behavior (PB) in lactating rats. To assess the LPS-induced sickness behavior, the plasma tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels were measured. METHODS: Lactating rats received 100 µg/kg LPS or saline solution on

Unpredictable maternal behavior and infant emotional reactivity in the context of high maternal adversity.

The impact of maternal adverse experiences on early parent-infant interaction and child development is widely acknowledged. Yet, the underlying mechanisms of intergenerational transmission remain poorly understood, especially in samples facing high adversity. This study explored the unpredictability of maternal (auditory, tactile, and visual) sensory signals as a mediator between maternal childhood maltreatment and infant emotional reactivity in a sample from southwestern Uganda. In 115 mother-infant dyads (M = 28.70 years, SD = 6.68, and M = 7.87 months, SD = 0.81), both maternal trauma expos

Maternal inattention and impulsivity and parenting behaviors.

This study extends previous research by examining whether maternal inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity are associated with different parenting behaviors. Ninety-six mother-son dyads participated in the study, and the boys ranged between 4 and 8 years of age. Maternal inattention was uniquely and positively associated with mothers' use of inconsistent discipline and lower involvement with the child after controlling for impulsivity and the control variables of child age, maternal depression and hostility, family socioeconomic status, and child behavior problems. Maternal impulsivity was

Social exclusion, infant behavior, social isolation, and maternal expectations independently predict maternal depressive symptoms.

The objective of the study was to identify latent variables that can be used to inform theoretical models of perinatal influences on postnatal depressed mood and maternal-infant attachment. A routine survey of mothers with newborn infants was commenced in South Western Sydney in 2000. The survey included the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and 46 psychosocial and health-related variables. Mothers (n = 15,389) delivering in 2002 and 2003 were surveyed at 2-3 weeks for depressive symptoms. Nonlinear principal components analysis was undertaken to identify dimensions that might repres

Maternal protein malnutrition prolongs sickness behavior in male offspring.

Female rats were fed a normal or hypoproteic diet during the phases of gestation and lactation. The male offspring of these rats were grown to adulthood and used to study the effects of maternal protein malnutrition on progeny. The adult male rats were pretreated with either saline or LPS and subjected to behavioral tests 2 and 6 h after administration. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), corticosterone and body temperature were the parameters used for assessment. Two hours after LPS administration, sickness behavior was developed in all the animals, regardless of maternal protein malnutrition. Aft

Decreased maternal behavior and anxiety in ephrin-A5-/- mice.

During development of the nervous system, molecular signals mediating cell-cell interactions play critical roles in the guidance of axonal growth and establishment of synaptic functions. The Eph family of tyrosine kinase receptors and their ephrin ligands has been shown to mediate neuronal interactions in the development of topographic axon projection maps in several brain regions, and the loss of Eph activities result in defects in select axonal pathways. However, effects of deficiencies of the Eph signals on animal behavior have not been well documented. In this study, we showed that inactiv

How early maternal deprivation changes the brain and behavior?

Early life stress can adversely influence brain development and reprogram brain function and consequently behavior in adult life. Adequate maternal care in early childhood is therefore particularly important for the normal brain development, and adverse early life experiences can lead to altered emotional, behavioral, and neuroendocrine stress responses in the adulthood. As a form of neonatal stress, maternal deprivation/separation is often used in behavioral studies to examine the effects of early life stress and for modeling the development of certain psychiatric disorders and brain patholog

Young mother-father dyads and maternal harsh parenting behavior.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether the age of parents predicted maternal harsh parenting behavior, specifically whether younger mothers might be at higher risk than older mothers, and which paternal characteristics might be associated with maternal parenting behavior. METHODOLOGY: This study used data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing (FFCW) study. In the present study, the authors examined a subsample of families for which complete data were available on all variables that were used in the analyses (n=1,597). Based on the parents' age at the time of the child's birth, mother-

Morphine pretreatment increases opioid inhibitory effects on maternal behavior.

Ongoing maternal behavior in rats is under the inhibitory influence of opiates. Exposure to drugs of abuse may result in a progressive and enduring enhancement of their reinforcing effects. Little attention has been paid to the possibility that puerperal treatment with morphine may lead to sensitization to this drug, ultimately influencing the effects of opiates on maternal behavior. The aim of the present study was to investigate if the abrupt withdrawal of repeated treatment with morphine chlorhydrate (MC) during late pregnancy and early lactation may influence maternal behavior in lactating

Maternal depression, child frontal asymmetry, and child affective behavior as factors in child behavior problems.

BACKGROUND: Despite findings that parent depression increases children's risk for internalizing and externalizing problems, little is known about other factors that combine with parent depression to contribute to behavior problems. METHODS: As part of a longitudinal, interdisciplinary study on childhood-onset depression (COD), we examined the association of mother history of COD, child frontal electroencephalogram asymmetry, and affective behavior with children's concurrent behavior problems. RESULTS: Children in the COD group had higher anxious/depressed and aggressive problems than did chi

Maternal drinking behavior and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in adolescents with criminal behavior in southern Brazil.

Prenatal alcohol exposure can have serious and permanent adverse effects. The developing brain is the most vulnerable organ to the insults of prenatal alcohol exposure. A behavioral phenotype of prenatal alcohol exposure including conduct disorders is also described. This study on a sample of Brazilian adolescents convicted for criminal behavior aimed to evaluate possible clinical features of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). These were compared to a control group of school adolescents, as well as tested for other environmental risk factors for antisocial behavior. A sample of 262 institutionalize

Lateral hypothalamic area: A central node for maternal behavior modulation.

Maternal behavior emerges from neural circuits that integrate hormonal, metabolic, motivational, and sensory information. While the medial preoptic area (MPOA) is recognized as a key regulator of maternal responses, increasing evidence identifies the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) may support successful caregiving. Through extensive connections with hypothalamic, mesolimbic, limbic, and brainstem networks, the LHA links internal physiological states to maternal behavioral output. Recent single-cell transcriptomic studies have revealed remarkable cellular and molecular diversity within the LHA

Association between maternal fever and psychological/behavior outcomes: a hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: This study is one of the first to investigate the association between maternal report of fever during middle to late pregnancy and psychological, behavioral, and educational outcomes in offspring. The hypothesis guiding this research was that maternal fever during the second trimester of pregnancy has an adverse effect on the development of the central nervous system (CNS) of the fetus, resulting in abnormalities of psychological development and behavior that can be observed in childhood. METHODS: Multivariate analyses of a birth cohort compared outcomes for children whose mothers
