Long-term effects of early maternal deprivation on goat social behaviour.

Early maternal deprivation has been shown to disrupt goat kids' social behaviour and stress-coping strategy, and has long-term effects in other species like cattle. We studied the long-term effects of early maternal deprivation on 18-month-old goats. Seventeen goats were raised together with their dams (DR kids) and other lactating goats and kids, while 18 goats were separated from their dams three days after birth and artificially reared together (AR kids). Kids of both treatments were weaned around two to three months of age, grouped and raised together until this study 15 months later. Affi

Early developmental emergence of human amygdala-prefrontal connectivity after maternal deprivation.

Under typical conditions, medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) connections with the amygdala are immature during childhood and become adult-like during adolescence. Rodent models show that maternal deprivation accelerates this development, prompting examination of human amygdala-mPFC phenotypes following maternal deprivation. Previously institutionalized youths, who experienced early maternal deprivation, exhibited atypical amygdala-mPFC connectivity. Specifically, unlike the immature connectivity (positive amygdala-mPFC coupling) of comparison children, children with a history of early adversity e

On the role of the dopaminergic system in the memory deficits induced by maternal deprivation.

Previous researches showed that maternal deprivation (MD) leads to memory deficits that persist until adulthood. The hippocampus, an important brain structure involved in memory processes, receives dopaminergic afferents from other brain areas that modulate memory. Here we demonstrated that MD results in object recognition memory deficits that are reverted by intra-hippocampal stimulation of D1-dopaminergic receptor and peripheral administration of a dopamine precursor. The D1-dopaminergic receptor and peripheral administration of a dopamine precursor also promoted memory persistence in contro

Sucrose and quinine intake by maternally-deprived and control rhesus monkeys.

Clinical depression is often characterized by a loss of interest or pleasure in formerly enjoyable activities. Analogs of anhedonia are established in rats, but the generality of this phenomenon to other species is unknown. Maternally-deprived rhesus macaques show a wide range of behavioral abnormalities that are reversed by chronic antidepressant treatment. We tested consumption by maternally deprived versus control macaques of sweetened (seven sucrose concentrations) or bitter water (four quinine concentrations) versus plain water to evaluate a non-human primate model of depression for signs

Effects on the fetus of maternal nitrofen exposure in the protein-deprived rat.

The separate and combined effects of protein deprivation and nitrofen exposure were studied in the pregnant rat. Animals were fed diets containing 24, 8, 6 or 4% casein throughout gestation. Within each diet group, subgroups were gavage-fed with 12.5 (lower dose) and 25 (higher dose) mg nitrofen/kg body weight or with oil carrier only on days 7-21 of gestation. Dams were weighed and food intake was measured daily. On day 21 of gestation, cesarean-derived pups were examined for congenital anomalies and dissected for determination of organ weights. Skeletons were alizarin-stained and examined fo

Maternal sleep deprivation and developmental programming of brain aging trajectories in offspring.

Maternal sleep deprivation (MSD) is a common but usually unnoticed issue during pregnancy, and in recent years, it has been increasingly recognised as an important prenatal stressor that may adversely influence maternal physiology, placental function, and fetal neurodevelopment. Sleep disturbances during pregnancy, including reduced sleep duration, fragmented sleep, poor sleep quality, circadian disruption, and rapid eye movement sleep restriction, have been associated with altered hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity, systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, and impaired circadian reg

Neurobiological mechanisms involved in maternal deprivation-induced behaviours relevant to psychiatric disorders.

Parental care is essential for proper development of stress response and emotion-related behaviours. Epidemiological studies show that parental loss in childhood represents a major risk factor for the development of mental disorders throughout the lifespan, including schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety. In most mammalian species, the mother is the main source of care and maternal behaviours regulate several physiological systems. Maternal deprivation (DEP) for 24 h is a paradigm widely used to disinhibit the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis response to stress during the stress hyporespon

Gestational Melatonin Supplementation Attenuates Maternal Sleep Deprivation-Induced Steatohepatitis Susceptibility in Offspring.

Sleep deprivation (SD) is a common issue among pregnant women. Maternal SD led to adverse effects on offspring health such as cognitive impairment through dysregulated metabolic pathways. However, it remains unknown whether maternal SD increases the offspring's susceptibility to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) development. Here, we induced maternal SD during pregnancy and observed that maternal SD during pregnancy promoted the development of diet-induced NASH in offspring of both sexes in adulthood, with exacerbation of liver weight gain, hepatic steatosis, fibrosis, and hepatic dysfunctio

The association between different aspects of socioeconomic deprivation and severe maternal morbidity.

INTRODUCTION: Living in a deprived neighborhood is associated with an increased risk of severe maternal morbidity (SMM), but the specific deprivation factors or individual SMM conditions driving this risk remain unclear. This study examined how different domains and subdomains of the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) are associated with SMM, identifying key contributors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a nationwide, population-based cohort study using English Hospital Episode Statistics Admitted Patient Care (HES APC) data. The cohort included 4 040 106 women aged 10-55 years who gave bi

Sex-dependent maternal deprivation effects on brain monoamine content in adolescent rats.

Rats subjected to a single prolonged episode of maternal deprivation (MD) [24h, postnatal days 9-10] show, later in life, behavioural alterations that resemble specific signs of schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric signs including increased levels of impulsivity and an apparent difficulty to cope with stressful situations. Some of these behavioural modifications are observable in the periadolescent period. However there is no previous information regarding the possible underlying neurochemical correlates at this critical developmental period. In this study we have addressed the effects of

Selective depression of serum growth hormone during maternal deprivation in rat pups.

Maternal deprivation was associated with a decline in immunoreactive growth hormone in the serum of rat pups. Pups that were returned to the mother showed a rapid reversal in this deprivation-induced decrease. The change in growth hormone concentration was not accompanied by changes in the concentrations of prolactin, thyrotropin, or corticosterone in the serum, but were correlated with alteration in the activity of ornithine decarboxylase in the brain. Treatment of neonatal rat pups with cyprohepatadine, a serotonin antagonist that suppresses growth hormone secretion, resulted in a significan

Comparison of the effects of early handling and early deprivation on maternal care in the rat.

It has been reported in the rat that postnatal manipulations can induce robust and persistent effects on offspring neurobiology and behavior, mediated in part via effects on maternal care. There have, however, been few studies of the effects of postnatal manipulations on maternal care. Here, we describe and compare the effects on maternal behavior on postnatal days 1-12 of two manipulations, early handling (EH, 15-min isolation per day) and early deprivation (ED, 4-hr isolation per day), relative to our normal postnatal husbandry procedure. Maternal behavior was measured at five time points ac

Effect of maternal protein deprivation on the development of neonatal intestinal function in rats.

The developmental pattern of in vitro intracellular accumulation (IA) was studied in the small intestine of the offspring of females fed a 27% protein diet (normal) (NPD animals) and the offspring of females fed an 8% protein diet (low) (LPD animals). At 2 days of age, the IA of L-leucine (Leu) and D-galactose (Gal) was significantly reduced in the intestines of the LPD animals as compared to the NPD animals at initial velocities (75% and 81%) and under steady state conditions (82% and 84%). The IA of both compounds in the intestines of the LPD animals increased relative to the NPD animals unt

Histamine reverses a memory deficit induced in rats by early postnatal maternal deprivation.

Early partial maternal deprivation causes long-lasting neurochemical, behavioral and brain structural effects. In rats, it causes a deficit in memory consolidation visible in adult life. Some of these deficits can be reversed by donepezil and galantamine, which suggests that they may result from an impairment of brain cholinergic transmission. One such deficit, representative of all others, is an impairment of memory consolidation, clearly observable in a one-trial inhibitory avoidance task. Recent data suggest a role of brain histaminergic systems in the regulation of behavior, particularly i

Opposite effects of early maternal deprivation on neurogenesis in male versus female rats.

BACKGROUND: Major depression is more prevalent in women than in men. The underlying neurobiological mechanisms are not well understood, but recent data shows that hippocampal volume reductions in depressed women occur only when depression is preceded by an early life stressor. This underlines the potential importance of early life stress, at least in women, for the vulnerability to develop depression. Perinatal stress exposure in rodents affects critical periods of brain development that persistently alter structural, emotional and neuroendocrine parameters in adult offspring. Moreover, stress

Physical exercise can reverse the deficit in fear memory induced by maternal deprivation.

Maternal deprivation during the first 10 days of life induces significant behavioral alterations in rodents which persist through adulthood. Physical exercise reduces the cognitive deficits associated with pharmacologic and pathological conditions. Here we investigated whether forced physical exercise alters memory deficits caused by postnatal maternal deprivation. Male rats were divided into four groups: (1) control, (2) deprived, (3) exercised, and (4) deprived+exercised. In groups 2 and 4, pups were deprived from their mothers for 3h/day during the first 10 days post-birth. In groups 3 and

Postweaning swimming exercise attenuates maternal sleep deprivation-induced aggressive behavior in offspring mice.

Sleep deprivation (SD) has become increasingly prevalent, drawing growing attention to its associated behavioral alterations and health consequences. Among pregnant women, SD tends to worsen with advancing gestational age. However, its effects on offspring aggression remain underexplored. This study examined how late gestational SD affected aggressive behavior in adolescent offspring mice and evaluated postweaning swimming exercise in warm water as a potential intervention against adverse outcomes induced by early life stress in offspring. Results showed that late gestational SD significantly

Alterations of Gray Matter Volume and White Matter Integrity in Maternal Deprivation Monkeys.

Maternal deprivation (MD) in rhesus monkeys has been demonstrated to be an effective model to mimic early adversity in humans because of the close phylogenetic similarity affinity. Although behavioral and hormonal abnormalities have been observed in MD monkeys, the neurobiological underpinning of the long-term deleterious effect of MD on monkeys is still unclear. In this study, we assessed emotional changes and socio-behavioral abnormalities induced by long-term MD and assessed structural alterations of gray matter volume (GMV) and white matter integrity (WMI) in 15 MD rhesus monkeys and in 15
