Maternal and child health epidemic-assistance investigations, 1946-2005.

During 1946-2005, a total of 1,969 investigations had sufficient data to classify them as possibly related to maternal and child health and were characterized by distinctive periods. Those related to family planning, pregnan

Intrauterine gestational diabetes mellitus, child anxiety, and internalizing symptoms: moderation by physical activity.

CONTEXT: Prenatal exposure to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is linked to increased risk for offspring mental health disorders, yet few studies account for maternal mental health or potential protective factors. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to examine whether prenatal GDM exposure is associated with child anxiety and depressive symptoms, independent of maternal depression, and whether child physical activity (PA) modifies these associations. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, data included 138 child-mother dyads (mean [SD] child age: 11.1 [2.5] years; 40% GDM-exposed; 56% female

Post-Up Study: Postpartum Depression Screening in Well-Child Care and Maternal Outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Postpartum depression often remains unaddressed. Screening in well-child care (WCC) may improve early detection, promote maternal recovery, and reduce effects on child development. We assessed the effectiveness of screening for postpartum depression in WCC compared with care as usual (CAU) on outcomes at mother and child levels. METHODS: In a prospective, quasiexperimental, comparative design, mothers visiting Dutch WCC centers were exposed either to screening at 1, 3, and 6 months postpartum (n = 1843) or to CAU (n = 1246). Assessments were at 3 weeks (baseline), 9 months (the Mi

Integrated prevention of mother-to-child transmission for human immunodeficiency virus, syphilis and hepatitis B virus in China.

PROBLEM: China continues to face challenges in eliminating mother-to-child transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), syphilis and hepatitis B virus (HBV). APPROACH: In 2010, a programme that integrated and standardized prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) efforts for HIV, syphilis and HBV was implemented in 1156 counties. At participating antenatal care clinics, pregnant women were offered all three tests concurrently and free of charge. Further interventions such as free treatment, prophylaxis and testing for mothers and their children were provided for HIV and syphil

Maternal Mental Health and Child Dietary Diversity in Rural Kenya: Findings From a Pooled Analysis of 2 Baseline Studies.

BACKGROUND: Most studies linking maternal mental health and child outcomes are from high-income countries and relatively few studies have explored how maternal mental health influences child nutrition in impoverished and rural settings across low-income countries. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the association between maternal mental health and child dietary diversity (CDD) in rural western Kenya. METHODS: The analysis pooled baseline data from 2 RCTs of nurturing care interventions in rural western Kenya (clinical trial registrations are clinicaltrials.gov: NCT05796934 and clinicalt

Integration of mother and child health services in Ethiopia.

In Wollo region of Ethiopia, various non-governmental officers have been working closely with each other and with the Regional Health Department to implement the policy of daily integrated mother and child health services. The record cards, registers, procedures and training courses of the separate 'vertically' organized services were brought together to enable the development of a model integrated service. There were improvements in accessibility, acceptability and output of the services. The system was evaluated by a joint Ministry of Health and UNICEF team, and was adopted for use in the re

Residential therapeutic communities for female substance abusers.

Therapeutic communities provide a unique model for the needs of chemically dependent mothers who are pregnant or of child bearing age. These programs have been treating female addicts, many of whom reflect the profile and needs of the current generation of addicted mothers in clinical problems, social disadvantages, and poor socialization. Specific issues of their recovery can be most efficiently addressed in a residential community that provides housing and a comprehensive approach including medical, social, psychological care, parental training, and child care. Most evident is that these wom

Effective interventions to ensure MCH (Maternal and Child Health) services during pandemic related health emergencies (Zika, Ebola, and COVID-19): A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Ensuring accessible and quality health care for women and children is an existing challenge, which is further exacerbated during pandemics. There is a knowledge gap about the effect of pandemics on maternal, newborn, and child well-being. This systematic review was conducted to study maternal and child health (MCH) services utilization during pandemics (Zika, Ebola, and COVID-19) and the effectiveness of various interventions undertaken for ensuring utilization of MCH services. METHODOLOGY: A systematic and comprehensive search was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL,
