A dynamically consistent computational method to solve numerically a mathematical model of polio propagation with spatial diffusion.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In this work, a mathematical model based on differential equations is proposed to describe the propagation of polio in a human population. The motivating system is a compartmental nonlinear model which is based on the use of ordinary differential equations and four compartments, namely, susceptible, exposed, infected and vaccinated individuals. METHODS: In this manuscript, the mathematical model is extended in order to account for spatial diffusion in one dimension. Nonnegative initial conditions are used, and we impose homogeneous Neumann conditions at the boundary.

Validation of 3-dimensional mathematical computation of feline bladder volume using orthogonal ultrasonographic bladder images.

Urine output measurement is critical for the management of hospitalized cats and their underlying conditions. Ultrasound-guided estimation of urinary bladder volume (UBV) is a non-invasive surrogate measurement that can provide important clinical information. The purpose of this study was to validate the accuracy of a novel 3D computation method in estimating UBV using 2D point-of-care ultrasonographic images. Bladder volume estimation was performed using coordinates from bladder circumference tracings on paired longitudinal and transverse ultrasonographic images (n = 359) aligned in 3D space

Engineering in Medicine To Address the Challenge of Cancer Drug Resistance: From Micro- and Nanotechnologies to Computational and Mathematical Modeling.

Drug resistance has profoundly limited the success of cancer treatment, driving relapse, metastasis, and mortality. Nearly all anticancer drugs and even novel immunotherapies, which recalibrate the immune system for tumor recognition and destruction, have succumbed to resistance development. Engineers have emerged across mechanical, physical, chemical, mathematical, and biological disciplines to address the challenge of drug resistance using a combination of interdisciplinary tools and skill sets. This review explores the developing, complex, and under-recognized role of engineering in medicin

ASAS-NANP SYMPOSIUM: MATHEMATICAL MODELING IN ANIMAL NUTRITION: Data-efficient Computer Vision for Precision Livestock Farming.

Precision livestock farming (PLF) increasingly relies on computer vision (CV) to monitor animal behavior, health, and production. However, widespread adoption remains limited by the large quantities of manually labeled data required to train most artificial intelligence (AI) models. This paper reviews AI and CV applications in PLF and presents three data-efficient case studies conducted at a research feedlot at Texas A&M University. The assessment of AI model predictability was conducted with precision, recall, F1-score, and adjusted rand index (ARI). In Case Study 1, a data-efficient Mask R-C

Sustainability & social segmentation in social media contagion: A mathematical and computational study on dual effects of individual needs & peer influence.

Addiction to internet-based social media has increasingly emerged as a critical social problem, especially among young adults and teenagers. Based on multiple research studies, excessive usage of social media may have detrimental psychological and physical impacts. In this study, we are going to explore mathematically the dynamics of social media addiction behavior and explore the determinants of compulsive use of social media from the dual perspectives of individual needs or cravings and peer-related factors or peer pressure. The theoretical analysis of the model without the peer pressure eff

Developing of a Mathematical Model to Perform Measurements of Axial Vertebral Rotation on Computer-Aided and Automated Diagnosis Systems, Using Raimondi's Method.

INTRODUCTION: Axial vertebral rotation (AVR) is a basic parameter in the study of idiopathic scoliosis and on physical two-dimensional images. Raimondi's tables are the most used method in the quantification of AVR. The development of computing technologies has enabled the creation of computer-aided or automated diagnosis systems (CADx) with which measurement on medical images can be carried out more quickly, simply, and with less intra and interobserver variabilities than manual methods. Although there are several publications dealing with the measurement of AVR in CADx systems, none of them

A mathematical and computational framework to predict the time to and recovery from osteoporosis via serial DEXA scans: a proof-of-concept model for digital decision support.

BACKGROUND: Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is the diagnostic standard for osteoporosis, yet its serial data remains underutilised in predictive analytics. To our knowledge, no published model provides explicit age-based predictions of osteoporosis onset or recovery using serial DEXA T-score trajectories. This proof-of-concept study describes a deterministic mathematical framework for predicting time to osteoporosis (TTO) and time to exit osteoporosis (TEO), defined as the age at which a patient's T-score trajectory reaches or exits the threshold of - 2.5. METHODS: We developed two de

A mathematical framework for pre-mass detection of renal tissue anomalies from computed tomography scans: exploration of a biomechanical signature based on enhancement kinetics.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of renal cancer remains challenging, as current imaging techniques predominantly identify tumors only after a visible mass has formed. Lesions smaller than 1 cm are particularly difficult to detect reliably using routine computed tomography (CT). This study presents a novel mathematical framework for detecting early renal tissue anomalies before visible mass formation, grounded in the hypothesis that tumorigenesis induces subtle biomechanical alterations in tissue enhancement patterns that are observable on CT imaging. METHODS: We introduced the Local Biomechanical

Computer-aided molecular modeling study of enantioseparation of iodiconazole and structurally related triadimenol analogues by capillary electrophoresis: chiral recognition mechanism and mathematical model for predicting chiral separation.

Chiral separation of iodiconazole, a new antifungal drug, and 12 new structurally related triadimenol analogues had been developed by capillary electrophoresis (CE) using hydroxypropyl-γ-cyclodextrin (HP-γ-CD) as the chiral selector. The effect of structural features of analytes on Δt and R(s) was studied under the optimum separation conditions. Using molecular docking technique and binding energy calculations, the inclusion process between HP-γ-CD and enantiomers was investigated and chiral recognition mechanisms were discussed. The results suggest that hydrogen bonding between fluorine at po

In-Memory Mathematical Operations with Spin-Orbit Torque Devices.

Analog arithmetic operations are the most fundamental mathematical operations used in image and signal processing as well as artificial intelligence (AI).  In-memory computing (IMC) offers a high performance and energy-efficient computing paradigm. To date, in-memory analog arithmetic operations with emerging nonvolatile devices are usually implemented using discrete components, which limits the scalability and blocks large scale integration. Here, a prototypical implementation of in-memory analog arithmetic operations (summation, subtraction and multiplication) is experimentally demonstrated,

Single-device in-sensor computing for multi-channel multiply-accumulate operations.

Recent advances in in-sensor computing demonstrate the potential of integrating sensing and computation at the perception front end; however, many existing approaches rely on customized devices, facing scalability, uniformity, and power challenges. Here, we present a cross-platform in-sensor computing strategy that embeds multiply-accumulate operations directly into the physical sensing process. We identify a mathematical isomorphism between carry propagation in computation and sensor's exponential decay response, establishing a general LinExp-τ principle that enables diverse sensing devices t

Autonomous Learning With High-Dimensional Computing Architecture Similar to Von Neumann's.

We model human and animal learning by computing with high-dimensional vectors (e.g., D = 10,000). The architecture resembles traditional (von Neumann) computing with numbers, but the instructions refer to vectors and operate on them in superposition. The architecture includes a high-capacity memory for vectors, counterpart of the random-access memory (RAM) for numbers. The model's ability to learn from data reminds us of deep learning, but with an architecture closer to biology. The architecture agrees with an idea from psychology that human memory and learning involve a short-term working mem

Is the time right for a new initiative in mathematical modeling of the lower urinary tract? ICI-RS 2023.

INTRODUCTION: A session at the 2023 International Consultation on Incontinence - Research Society (ICI-RS) held in Bristol, UK, focused on the question: Is the time right for a new initiative in mathematical modeling of the lower urinary tract (LUT)? The LUT is a complex system, comprising various synergetic components (i.e., bladder, urethra, neural control), each with its own dynamic functioning and high interindividual variability. This has led to a variety of different types of models for different purposes, each with advantages and disadvantages. METHODS: When addressing the LUT, the mod

Tailoring elastic and inelastic collisions of relativistic antiferromagnetic domain walls.

Soliton-based computing relies on their unique properties for transporting energy and emerging intact from head-on collisions. Magnetic domain walls are often referred to as solitons disregarding the strict mathematical definition requiring the above scattering property. Here we demonstrate the conditions of elastic and inelastic scattering for spin-orbit torque-induced dynamics of relativistic domain walls on the technologically relevant Mn[Formula: see text]Au antiferromagnetic material. We show that even domain walls with opposite winding numbers can experience elastic scattering and we pre

Innovative methodology to transfer conventional GC-MS heroin profiling to UHPLC-MS/MS.

Nowadays, in forensic laboratories, heroin profiling is frequently carried out by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This analytical technique is well established, provides good sensitivity and reproducibility, and allows the use of large databases. Despite those benefits, recently introduced analytical techniques, such as ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC), could offer better chromatographic performance, which needs to be considered to increase the analysis throughput for heroin profiling. With the latter, chromatographic conditions were optimized throug
