Unique and Combined Effects of Small-Group Fraction Vocabulary and Arithmetic Interventions for Students With Mathematical Difficulties.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a fraction vocabulary intervention with fraction arithmetic components on fraction vocabulary knowledge and fraction arithmetic competencies among fourth-grade Chinese students with mathematics difficulties. We randomly assigned 70 students with mathematics difficulties to three conditions: fraction vocabulary only (n = 23), fraction vocabulary with an arithmetic component (n = 23), and a business-as-usual (BaU) condition (n = 24). The students in the fraction vocabulary intervention conditions participated in 10 sessions, occurring three

The Roles of Gestural and Symbolic Schematizations in Inhibition as a Component of Executive Functions.

The role of gestural schematization in enhancing thinking processes has been the subject of a large body of works. In this process, contextually unimportant or irrelevant information related to a concept (or a system of concepts) is deleted or ignored, while relevant spatial information is maintained. This process is a special type of inhibition, which is one of the key components of executive functions. In this short paper, it is suggested that gestural schematization is a special type of symbolic schematization, a much more general process through which irrelevant information related to feat

Differential Switch Costs in Typically Achieving Children and Children With Mathematical Difficulties.

Children with mathematical difficulties need to spend more time than typically achieving children on solving even simple equations. Since these tasks already require a larger share of their cognitive resources, additional demands imposed by the need to switch between tasks may lead to a greater decline of performance in children with mathematical difficulties. We explored differential task switch costs with respect to switching between addition versus subtraction with a tablet-based arithmetic verification task and additional standardized tests in German elementary school children in Grades 1

[Calculations of mean refraction and variation of refraction using a dioptric space].

Polar notations (sphere, cylinder, and axis) of refraction perfectly characterize a single refraction but are not suitable for statistical analysis or graphic representation. While the spherical component of refraction can be easily analyzed by the spherical equivalent, statistical analysis of astigmatism requires non-polar expressions of refraction. Indeed, the cylinder and axis of astigmatism are not independent data. In addition, axis is a directional data including a non-trigonometric cycle. Refraction can be written in a non-polar notation by three rectangular coordinates (x, y, z), which

A randomized controlled study of a second grade numeracy intervention with Swedish students at-risk of mathematics difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Early numeracy interventions including basic arithmetic are crucial for young students at risk for early mathematics difficulties (MDs), yet few studies have evaluated numeracy interventions in second grade with a randomized controlled design. AIM: This pre- and post-test randomized controlled study evaluated the effects of an intensive 9-week numeracy and arithmetic programme for second-grade students at risk for early MDs. The focus of the programme was students' foundational understanding of numbers and mathematical concepts and procedural fluency with arithmetic tasks. SAMPLE

The effect of a 2-month abacus training on students with developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is a specific mathematics learning disorder, characterized by the atypical development of number sense, arithmetic calculation, and atypical development of brain structures and brain activations in core brain regions for number processing. The current study examined the intervention effect of a 2-month abacus training on DD students. Results showed that compared with the non-trained control group, the DD students with abacus training showed higher scores in number sense, calculation, and sustained attention abilities. Additionally, a larger percentage of students

Embedding Self-Regulation Instruction Within Fractions Intervention for Third Graders With Mathematics Difficulties.

The purpose of this study was to explore the efficacy of fractions intervention with and without an embedded self-regulation (SR) component for third-grade students at risk for mathematics disabilities. Fractions intervention focused on magnitude understanding and word problems. Embedded SR was designed to support a growth mindset (fostering belief that intellectual and academic abilities can be developed) along with SR processes in which students set goals, self-monitor, and use strategies to engage motivationally, metacognitively, and behaviorally through challenging tasks. Students (n = 69)

Number sense in the transition from natural to rational numbers.

BACKGROUND: Rational numbers are of critical importance both in mathematics and in other fields of science. However, they form a stumbling block for learners. One widely known source of the difficulty learners have with rational numbers is the natural number bias, that is the tendency to (inappropriately) apply natural number properties in rational number tasks. Still, it has been shown that a good understanding of natural numbers is highly predictive for mathematics achievement in general, and for performance on rational number tasks in particular. AIMS: In this study, we further investigate

The mechanism of inhibition control in mathematical reasoning: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The ability to comprehend and engage in mathematical reasoning is a fundamental cognitive skill, central to problem-solving and critical thinking. However, the intricate cognitive processes underlying mathematical reasoning, particularly in relation to inhibitory control, have garnered increasing attention in recent research. While previous studies have explored this connection, there remains a need for a more comprehensive understanding of the interplay between inhibitory control and mathematical reasoning. This study explored the contribution of response inhibition

Revisiting the Open Sampling format: Improving risky choices through a novel graphical representation.

When making risky choices, people often fall short of the norm of expected value (EV) maximization. Previous research has shown that presenting options in the Open Sampling (OSa) format, a 10-by-10 matrix of randomly arranged outcomes, can improve choices and reduce decision times. First, the current research aims to replicate and extend the findings on the OSa format. To this end, we compare OSa to the common description-based format as well as further graphical representations, and investigate the resulting accordance with EV maximization and decision time. Second, we study whether people lo

Stability of linear delay differential systems via Laplace transformation.

We present a Laplace transform approach for explicitly solving linear delay differential systems with multiple discrete delays by applying the Cauchy residue theorem. This method enables direct determination of the stability of the trivial solution when delays are relatively small. Its efficacy is illustrated through two nonlinear models with two and three delays, respectively, for which explicit solutions and stability criteria are obtained. The approach offers two key advantages: (i) analytic solutions are obtained with less effort than the method of steps, and (ii) a small hyper-tetrahedron

Counting Phylogenetic Networks with Few Reticulation Vertices: Galled and Reticulation-Visible Networks.

We give exact and asymptotic counting results for the number of galled networks and reticulation-visible networks with few reticulation vertices. Our results are obtained with the component graph method, which was introduced by L. Zhang and his coauthors, and generating function techniques. For galled networks, we in addition use analytic combinatorics. Moreover, in an appendix, we consider maximally reticulated reticulation-visible networks and derive their number, too.

Children's comparison of different-length numbers: Managing different attributes in multidigit number processing.

In everyday life the comparison of numbers usually occurs between numbers with different numbers of digits. However, experimental research here is scarce. Recent research has shown that adults respond faster to congruent pairs (the initial digit in the number with more digits is larger, e.g., 2384 vs. 107) than to incongruent pairs (the initial digit is larger in the number with fewer digits, e.g., 2675 vs. 398). This has been interpreted as support for the processing of multiple attributes in parallel and against serial accounts. The current research asked whether there is a change in the rel

Building fraction magnitude knowledge with number lines: Partitioning versus analogy.

Understanding fraction magnitudes is foundational for later math achievement. To represent a fraction x/y, children are often taught to use partitioning: Break the whole into y parts and shade in x parts. Past research has shown that partitioning on number lines supports children's fraction magnitude knowledge more than partitioning on area models. However, partitioning may not take full advantage of children's prior knowledge or the structure of the number line. We tested an alternative fraction number line lesson that leveraged children's preexisting whole number knowledge using a domain-gen

Dyscalculia and the Calculating Brain.

Dyscalculia, like dyslexia, affects some 5% of school-age children but has received much less investigative attention. In two thirds of affected children, dyscalculia is associated with another developmental disorder like dyslexia, attention-deficit disorder, anxiety disorder, visual and spatial disorder, or cultural deprivation. Infants, primates, some birds, and other animals are born with the innate ability, called subitizing, to tell at a glance whether small sets of scattered dots or other items differ by one or more item. This nonverbal approximate number system extends mostly to single

Investigating the incremental validity of cognitive variables in early mathematics screening.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the incremental validity of a set of domain general cognitive measures added to a traditional screening battery of early numeracy measures. The sample consisted of 458 kindergarten students of whom 285 were designated as severely at-risk for mathematics difficulty. Hierarchical multiple regression results indicated that Wechsler Abbreviated Scales of Intelligence (WASI) Matrix Reasoning and Vocabulary subtests, and Digit Span Forward and Backward measures explained a small, but unique portion of the variance in kindergarten students' mathematics per

Arithmetic Abilities in Children With Developmental Dyslexia: Performance on French ZAREKI-R Test.

A high comorbidity between reading and arithmetic disabilities has already been reported. The present study aims at identifying more precisely patterns of arithmetic performance in children with developmental dyslexia, defined with severe and specific criteria. By means of a standardized test of achievement in mathematics ( Calculation and Number Processing Assessment Battery for Children; von Aster & Dellatolas, 2006), we analyzed the arithmetic abilities of 47 French children with dyslexia attending 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. Of them, 40% displayed arithmetic deficits, mostly with regard to nu

Fraction Intervention for Students With Mathematics Difficulties: Lessons Learned From Five Randomized Controlled Trials.

In this article, the authors summarize results from 5 randomized controlled trials assessing the effects of intervention to improve the fraction performance of fourth-grade students at risk for difficulty in learning about fractions. The authors begin by explaining the importance of competence with fractions and why an instructional focus on fractions magnitude understanding may improve learning. They then describe an intervention that relies strongly on this type of understanding about fractions instruction, and they provide an overview of the intervention's overall effects. This is followed

Development of early numeracy skills in children with moderate intellectual disability.

This study assessed the effectiveness of a program aimed at improving the early numeracy skills of students with moderate intellectual disability. The persistence of the acquired skills and the program's impact on learning were monitored. Feedback from the students and their mothers was also gathered. Using a multiple-probe design across subjects, the results were visually presented through graphical analysis. Three male students aged 8-9 years participated. After obtaining high-reliability findings from reliability analyses, results showed the program effectively increased students' number sk
