Gaucher's disease involving the maxillary sinuses.

A 46-year-old man with a long history of Gaucher's disease involving the spleen, bone marrow, and multiple bones presented with apparent sinusitis. He had radiologic opacification and histologically documented involvement by Gaucher's disease of the maxillary antra. Bony involvement of the mandible and maxilla has rarely been reported. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first reported case of paranasal sinus involvement by Gaucher's disease.

Liability of ultrasound in maxillary sinus disease.

For the first time liability of of ultrasonography in diagnosing paranasal sinus disease was controlled in 256 patients with acute maxillary sinusitis as compared to irrigation findings and in 150 patients with persistent maxillary sinus disease using x-rays, sinoscopy and sinumanometry as controls. Confidence in diagnosing the presence of discharge ranges up 90%. In cases of total opacity of the sinus, ultrasonography helps differentiating mucosal swelling, tumor and discharge.

Maxillary sinusitis mimicking malignant disease.

The diagnostic features of both maxillary sinusitis and neoplastic disease of the antrum are described. In most cases the clinical and radiographic evidence will lead to the correct diagnosis. However, in the two cases presented here, the clinical and radiographic evidence of neoplastic disease of the maxillary sinus was not confirmed by biopsy and histologic examination. The significant fact that radiographic evidence of bone destruction of the antral walls can occur in maxillary sinusitis is discussed. This sign, together with a unilateral epistaxis, must always be considered as evidence of

[Research progress in maxillary sinus mucosal disease associated with maxillary sinus floor lifting].

Maxillary sinus augmentation is an effective procedure to gain bone height for implant placement in an atrophic posterior maxilla. But maxillary sinus diseases are prevalent in patients scheduled for sinus lift procedures. The presence of these diseases may increase the difficulties in performing the surgery and the risk of developing postoperative complications. This paper summarizes and introduces the common maxillary sinus mucosa diseases related to maxillary sinus augmentation.

Evaluation and treatment of isolated maxillary sinus disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The maxillary sinus may be involved in a wide variety of disorders. Many of these share common presenting symptoms but some have unique features. This article reviews some of the recent publications in this area. RECENT FINDINGS: The majority of isolated maxillary sinus disease has been previously described. Some recent data on the microbiology of sinusitis have been published. The review also highlights the growing role of endoscopic surgical management due to improved instrumentations and techniques. SUMMARY: On the basis of the review, diagnosing isolated maxillary sinu

[Analysis of imaging features and treatment strategies of unilateral maxillary sinus and nasal diseases].

Objective: To analyze the imaging features of unilateral maxillary sinus nasal lesions and the selection of treatment strategies based on imaging findings for these lesions. Method: The CT and enhanced MRI data of 64 cases of unilateral maxillary sinus and nasal lesions were selected. The imaging findings and surgery approach were observed and recorded. To summarize the imaging characteristics and analyze the choice of treatment strategy. Result: All 64 Unilateral maxillary sinus nasal lesions presented a roughly uniform soft tissue density shadow on CT. In all benign lesions, there were 9 cas

Chronic facial pain following diseases affecting the maxillary antrum. The influence of peripheral impulses from the maxillary air sinus is not significant in their maintenance.

For the purpose of examining the significance of a pain focus in the maxillary air sinus denervation of the mucosa of the sinus by transantral maxillary nerve section was performed. The material comprises 20 patients with pain in the distribution of the infraorbital nerve and previous disease of the relevant sinus. All patients had been treated previously without any benefit from peripheral surgery of the infraorbital nerve. Only 20% had any benefit of the proximal avulsion for more than three months. It is concluded that impulses from the mucosa of the maxillary sinus do not play any part in

[Efficacy of endoscopic nasal lateral wall dissection approach in the treatment of maxillary sinus diseases].

OBJECTIVE: A retrospective analysis of the clinical efficacy on the surgery of maxillary sinus diseases via the endoscopic lateral nasal wall incision, and a discussion on the clinical application of this approach. METHOD: Eighteen cases of the maxillary sinus diseases diagnosed on the basis of the preoperative nasal endoscopy, CT scan or MRI, and pathologic finding. Among 13 patients underwent routine lateral nasal wall incision approach, including 4 of maxillary sinus hemorrhagic and necrotic polyps, 4 of maxillary sinus cyst, and 3 of the maxillary sinus fungal infection. Five patients und

Pseudotumor of the Maxillary Sinus in a Child with Von Willebrand Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular pseudotumors, also known as blood cysts, are rare complications which occur more frequently in patients with an associated bleeding disorder such as hemophilia. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 2-year and 6-month-old patient with a hemophilic pseudotumor associated with Von Willebrand's disease, who consulted the emergency room due to spontaneous increase in volume of the left maxillary region, with no previous relevant medical history. CONCLUSIONS: Different imaging studies were carried out to characterize the lesion, providing the necessary information for the c

Canine fossa trephine for the severely diseased maxillary sinus.

BACKGROUND: The appropriate surgical approach to the severely diseased maxillary sinus is still debatable. Some advocate creating a wide maxillary antrostomy to allow for increased ventilation and improved delivery of postoperative medication. Others, however, recommend more aggressive surgery with complete clearance of all diseased tissue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of canine fossa puncture and canine fossa trephine (CFT) for the severely diseased maxillary sinus. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on 97 patients who underwent a CFT as a part of endosc

Endoscopic sinus surgery for inflammatory maxillary sinus disease.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: The role of endoscopic sinus surgery for treating chronic maxillary sinusitis is well established. The purpose of the study is to determine the efficacy of endoscopic sinus surgery in the treatment of maxillary sinus inflammatory disease that includes mucoceles, retention cysts, and antrochoanal polyps. STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective review of 32 consecutive patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery for mucoceles (n = 21), retention cysts (n = 5), or antrochoanal polyps (n = 6). METHODS: The medical records were reviewed for patient demographics, presenting

Are maxillary mucosal cysts a manifestation of inflammatory sinus disease?

BACKGROUND: The aetiology of maxillary mucosal cysts is uncertain. Chronic rhinosinusitis has been proposed as a probable aetiological explanation for their formation. METHOD: We recruited 500 consecutive patients who had undergone computed tomography scanning of the paranasal sinuses for possible chronic sinus disease. We identified 110 (22 per cent) cases of maxillary mucosal cysts. RESULTS: Patients' mean age was 42.65 years, with a female to male ratio of 0.69:1 (45:65). The mean cyst size was 14.27 mm, and most were located on the inferior surface of the antrum. Only in two cases did th
