Inflammatory pseudotumours of the paranasal sinuses are rare entities and can be easily confused with aggressive malignant tumours. In this report we describe the characteristic behavior of inflammatory pseudotumours in the maxillary sinus. We present a case of a 47-year-old Caucasian woman, who presented in our ENT department because of progressive nasal obstruction, epistaxis, and epiphora. The clinical as well as the radiological findings suggested a maxillary sinus neoplasm, most probably of malignant nature. The histopathological examination showed an inflammatory pseudotumour of the maxi

Keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) is a benign intraosseous neoplasm of the jaw. Involvement of the maxillary sinus is an unusual presentation. We present the case of a 23-year-old man with extensive KCOT and impacted third molar in the right maxillary sinus. The clinical, radiological, and histological features of this tumor and its surgical management are discussed.

Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) widely conducted in nasal and paranasal sinus surgery provides superior magnification, illumination, and angled visualization, enabling the surgeon to isolate the tumor base and accurately define disease extent. Endoscopic medial maxillectomy (EMM), an advanced ESS procedure, effectively treats benign sinonasal neoplasms such as inverted papilloma. We analyzed a series of EMM cases and their clinical outcomes, including 9 inverted papillomas, 1 solitary fibrous tumor, 1 hemangioma, 1 blood boil and 1 esthesioneuroblastoma. EMMs were conducted by an experienced su

Paranasal sinus cancers comprise about 0.3% of all cancers and 80% of these lesions arise in the maxillary sinus. A masquerading primary sinus tumour represents a therapeutic challenge as most patients with maxillary antrum cancer are diagnosed with advanced disease. However, distant metastases rarely occur. We examined the clinical outcome of patients with antrum neoplasms. Medical records were obtained for all patients diagnosed with a sinus malignancy between July 2009 and January 2014. During this period, 41 patients with maxillary tumours were treated, among which 9 patients received a ma

The radiographic manifestation of malignant lesions of the maxillary sinus on dental radiographs may be nonspecific, making it difficult to differentiate the lesion from disease of odontogenic origin or more benign sinus pathoses. A radiopaque mass in the maxillary sinus, resulting from a malignant neoplasm growing within or extending into the sinus, can be easily confused with the mass of a mucous retention pseudocyst. Similarly, a malignant growth in the early stages of development can produce radiographic patterns in the alveolar process that may resemble inflammation of odontogenic origin.

As a group, odontomas are the most common odontogenic neoplasms. This case report illustrates the benefits of cone beam computed tomography, in terms of treatment planning and surgical technique, to localize a large maxillary odontoma and accurately establish its relationship with the maxillary sinus and molar.

An approach for total maxillectomy with endoscopic transection of the pterygoid process via the contralateral maxillary sinus is described. In total maxillectomy, the resection of the pterygoid process of the sphenoid is a key step for successful resection. However, a conventional craniofacial approach requires extensive incision in the face, elevation of the lateral cheek flap. Even after elevation of the lateral cheek flap, visualization of this region is not good. An endoscopic approach through the contralateral maxillary sinus improved visualization of the pterygoid process, and osteotomy

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: Maxillary sinus cancer is a malignant neoplasm with a prevalence of 3 to 5% of tumors in the head and neck and less than 1% of all malignant neoplasms. The role of p63 and caspase-3 and their predictive value in squamous cell carcinoma of maxillary sinus (SCCMS) remains an underdeveloped and controversial issue that determined the relevance of the study. The aim: To analyze the relationship between the level of expression of p63 and caspase-3 and clinical and morphological characteristics of squamous cell carcinoma of maxillary sinus and to determine their prognostic s

Solitary plasmacytoma (SP) is an uncommon form of plasma cell neoplasm occurring intraosseously or in soft tissue and presents as a single mass of monoclonal plasma cells. SP in the maxillary sinus is rare and can be misdiagnosed as other maxillary sinus tumors. The essential examinations in patients with the initial diagnosis of plasmacytoma are bone marrow biopsy, serum and urine electrophoresis, and kappa/lambda ratio (κ:λ ratio) to rule out multiple myeloma (MM). Herein, a rare case of SP in the maxillary sinus treated by surgery and localized radiation is reported. At the 10-year follow-u

OBJECTIVES: Treatment of inflammatory and neoplastic disease in the maxillary sinus, pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae requires appropriate surgical exposure. As modern rhinology evolves, so do the techniques available. This paper reviews extended endoscopic approaches to the maxillary sinus and the evidence supporting each technique.
METHODS: A literature search of the Ovid Medline and PubMed databases was performed using appropriate key words relating to endoscopic approaches to the maxillary sinus.
RESULTS: Mega-antrostomy and medial maxillectomy have a role in the surgical treatme

INTRODUCTION: C-X-C chemokine receptor type 7 (CXCR7) has recently been characterised as a novel receptor for the C-X-C motif chemokine 12 (CXCL12)/stromal cell-derived factor 1-alpha. CXCR7 has been thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis, angiogenesis and tumour metastasis. The present study aimed to examine the expression of CXCR7 in tissue samples of laryngeal cancer and maxillary sinus carcinoma to determine its role in the development of otorhinolaryngologic neoplasms.
METHODS: Samples of otorhinolaryngologic neoplasms were obtained from 17 patien

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) of the maxillary sinus is a very rare neoplasm that shares some characteristics with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been reported to be associated with LEC located outside of the nasopharynx in Asian populations. A case report of a 64-year-old Asian female with right-sided cheek mass which was diagnosed preoperatively as a maxillary mass by paranasal sinus computed tomography scan is presented. Because maxillary sinus cancer with orbital invasion was considered, she underwent surgical removal of a mass. Final pathology revealed LEC, whic

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare benign odontogenic neoplasm of the jaws, accounting for less than 3% of all odontogenic tumors. It rarely extends into the maxillary sinus. Till date, six cases involving maxillary sinus have been reported. In this paper, we report the seventh case of a 52-year-old male with CEOT in maxilla extending from distal surface of the right maxillary canine to retromolar area and involving maxillary sinus with no association with impacted teeth. The diagnosis was confirmed by aspiration cytology and histologically, the tumor was composed of shee

The most common abnormality of the lacrimal drainage system is congenital or acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction. The causes of acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction may be primary or secondary. The secondary acquired obstructions may result from infection, inflammation, neoplasm, trauma or mechanical causes. The maxillary sinus cysts usually obstruct the nasolacrimal duct mechanically. Dentigerous cysts are one of the main types of maxillary cysts. These cysts are benign odontogenic cysts which are associated with the crowns of unerupted teeth. The clinical documentations of mechanical na

A nasal neuroblastoma (esthesioneuroblastoma) extending into the brain in a heifer produced mouth breathing and proptosis. The mass filled much of the left nasal cavity, palatine sinus and maxillary sinus, with turbinate atrophy and deviation of the septum. Caudally the neoplasm extended into the nasopharynx and olfactory bulb. It was a cellular neoplasm composed of small, undifferentiated piriform cells showing infrequent pseudorosettes and immature axonal processes. Mitosis was common is some areas.

A sinonasal mucocele can develop after the obstruction of a sinus ostium, which can occur secondary to trauma, infection, a neoplasm, or an iatrogenic cause. These mucoceles typically arise in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses. Sinonasal mucoceles are epithelium-lined cysts that can gradually expand to fill a paranasal sinus. They can present with ophthalmologic, rhinologic, and neurologic symptoms. There are reports in the literature of sinonasal mucocele development after radiation for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. However, these cases are rare; when they do occur, they tend to arise in the spheno

Maxillary sinus hypoplasia (MSH) is an uncommonly encountered condition by otolaryngologists. The computerized tomography (CT) scans provide valuable data about the anatomic details of the paranasal sinuses. MSH may be misdiagnosed as an infection or a neoplasm of the maxillary sinuses. Variations of the other paranasal structures, especially the uncinate process associated with MSH were defined. MSH shows three distinct hypoplasia patterns. Type I MSH characteristics are mild hypoplasia of the maxillary sinus, normal uncinate process and a well-developed infundibular passage. Significant hypo

Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) is an uncommon benign cystic neoplasm of the jaw that develops from the odontogenic epithelium. Invasion into the maxillary sinus by a CCOT is not a typical, and the recurrence of the cystic variant of CCOT in the posterior maxilla is rare. This report describes a recurrent CCOT occupying most of the maxillary sinus of a 24-year-old male patient. As a treatment, marsupialization was carried out as a means of decompression, and the involved teeth were all endodontically treated. Afterward, surgical enucleation was performed. The size of the lesion cont

BACKGROUND: Inverted papillomas (IPs) are benign neoplasms, most commonly arising from the mucosal lining of the maxillary sinus. IPs can have single or multifocal sites of attachment. Although pedicle location is an important factor to consider in surgical planning, it is less clear whether the location or number of IP attachment sites hold any prognostic value. Herein, we aimed to determine the prognostic significance of the number and location of attachment sites of IPs originating from the maxillary sinus when managed by a pure endoscopic approach.
METHODS: This was a single-center, singl

INTRODUCTION: Keratocystic odontogenic tumors are benign neoplasms of odontogenic origin with a potential for aggressive and infiltrative behavior. Many different treatments for this type of lesion have been reported. However, no common consensus has emerged to date regarding the most effective therapeutic approach. Cases of maxillary sinus giant keratocystic odontogenic tumors completely excised by enucleation or marsupialization via endoscopic sinus surgery are extremely rare, and, to the best of our knowledge, only one case has been described in the literature since 2005.
