[Work-related injuries in the maxillofacial region].

A retrospective study covering a period of 3.5 years was undertaken to determine the incidence of work-related injuries in the maxillofacial region. A group of 2,383 patients treated at our institution with maxillofacial trauma of various causes was evaluated. Work-related maxillofacial injuries in this population ranked fourth in frequency of occurrence after traffic accidents, falls, and acts of violence. Hand tools were found to be the culprit of most of the injuries in the maxillofacial region. The majority of the fractures of the facial skeleton were comminuted and/or compound and mostly

Are the Elderly With Maxillofacial Injuries at Increased Risk of Associated Injuries?

PURPOSE: As the geriatric population continues to increase, more elderly patients with maxillofacial injuries are encountered in emergency rooms. It can be hypothesized that advanced age increases the risk of associated injuries (AIs). The purpose of the study was to estimate the frequency of AI and measure the association between age and risk for AI among a sample of patients with facial fractures. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was designed and implemented. The study sample comprised patients aged 18 years or older who presented to the Töölö Trauma Centre, Helsinki University Hospita

Bicycle-related maxillofacial injuries: a double-center study.

OBJECTIVE: Bicycle-related injuries account for an important proportion of road injuries all over the world. As only few reports have focused on the characteristics of maxillofacial fractures sustained in bicycle accidents, the purpose of this study was to present and compare epidemiological data about bicycle-related maxillofacial injuries in two European centers between 2001 and 2010. METHODS: Bicycle-related facial fractures occurred in 105 patients (79 males, 26 females) in Turin, with a percentage of 5.77 among all facial fractures, and in 103 patients (55 males, 50 females) in Amsterdam

Concomitant injuries in 531 patients with maxillofacial fractures.

A ten-year review of five hundred and thirty one patients with facial fractures who sustained six hundred and forty eight associated injuries was presented. The male to female ratio was 2.7:1 and the highest incidence was in the 21-30 years age group. Road traffic accident was the commonest aetiology while the most frequently associated injury was soft tissue lacerations (71.0%). Neurological injuries constituted 9.9% of the total number of concomitant injuries. Other associated injuries seen were orthopaedic injuries 9.5%, ophthalmologic injuries 6.6%, chest injuries 1.9%, abdominal injuries

Equine-associated maxillofacial injuries: retrospective 5-year analysis.

We explored the relation between the causes of facial injuries in equestrians and the presence or absence of associated injuries. Over a 5-year period we retrospectively reviewed all patients who presented to the John Hunter Hospital, New South Wales, with facial injuries that had resulted from activity with horses. We analysed the rates of hard and soft tissue injuries, and of associated injuries by sex and mechanism. A total of 85 patients were included (50 female and 35 male) with an age range of 2-88 years. There was a significant difference in the rate of maxillofacial and associated inju

Aspiration of two permanent teeth during maxillofacial injuries.

Aspiration of a tooth in maxillofacial injuries is a known complication necessitating prompt recognition and early treatment to minimize potentially serious and, sometimes, even fatal consequences. Here, we report a rare and unusual case in its presentation, the patient having aspirated 2 permanent teeth after maxillofacial, cervical vertebrae, and thoracic region crush injuries due to a motor vehicle accident. The diagnosis of teeth aspiration was delayed until 2 weeks after the event. An aspirated anterior tooth was expectorated by the patient himself, and the other aspirated anterior tooth

Care of maxillofacial injuries: survey of plastic surgeons.

The purpose of this survey was to evaluate the current trends in the care of facial trauma. Data were obtained through the responses of a survey mailed to all those members and candidates listed in the 1989 American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons Directory. A total of 2777 questionnaires were sent, with 1113 (40 percent) returned by means of a self-addressed envelope. Demographic results show that over 70 percent of the treating plastic surgeons fall within the age range 30 to 50 years. Although significant advances have occurred, treatment goals have remained unchanged. These
