Reconstruction of functional occlusion in case of a large surgical defect of the mandible involving partial mandibulectomy remains a significant challenge to the maxillofacial surgeon and prosthodontist. Removable appliances and the conventional implant-supported prosthesis are precluded in this case due to the absence of normal anatomical contours of the bone. In recent years, due to the advancement of technology, bone graft reconstruction with computer-guided rehabilitation of the functional occlusion has been advocated to reverse the debilitating effects of the hemimandibulectomy defect. Leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignant condition occurring in the maxillofacial region in which the mandible may be affected. Management of this tumor in the mandible may include segmental mandibulectomy, osteocutaneous fibula free-flap reconstruction, endosseous implants, and postoperative radiotherapy. Posttreatment malocclusion can be managed with an overpartial mandibular resection prosthesis. The purpose of this report is to describe the expeditious oral rehabilitation of an oncologic patient with posttreatment malocclusion, demonstrating the utility of an overpartial mandibular resection pro

Few published reports have addressed the issues related to upper lip reconstruction. The present clinical report describes the maxillofacial rehabilitation of an edentulous patient who had been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal septum and contiguous structures. The patient underwent total rhinectomy, anterior maxillectomy, and maxillary lip resection. Her maxillary lip was reconstructed with a bilateral cheek advancement flap, which allowed primary closure of the lip and aided in maintaining function of the orbicularis oris muscle. Microstomia was anticipated and was a conseq

PURPOSE: Increasing demands are placed on the oral and maxillofacial surgeon to perform early or immediate loading of dental implants due to demands and expectations of the referring doctor and patients. In order to provide the patient with an immediately loaded, functioning implant, the surgeon should consider incorporating the fabrication of the temporary restoration as an additional service for their implant patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The armamentarium necessary for the oral and maxillofacial surgeon to deliver a temporary restoration will be described. The materials and components n

Bilateral maxillectomy is known to have serious esthetic and functional consequences. The retention and support of a maxillary obturator prosthesis in these patients is particularly challenging. Surgical placement of implants is also challenging because of the lack of available bone. Therefore, implant placement into remote sites such as zygoma has been advocated. Very few articles in the literature have discussed the use of pterygoid/pterygomaxillary implants in patients undergoing maxillectomy. This case report describes the maxillofacial rehabilitation of an elderly man who underwent a bila

A facial defect results in cosmetic, functional, and psychologic problems and acts as a difficult and challenging procedure for the maxillofacial surgeon and the prosthodontist. Retention of a facial prosthesis is an important key in the patient's satisfaction and acceptance. The introduction of extraoral implant applications have been accepted as an advanced retention method. The purpose of this article is to report the results from our clinical experience with patients wearing facial prostheses anchored to extraoral ITI implants (Straumann, AG, Basel, Switzerland).

This clinical report describes the treatment of a patient with insufficient tongue movement due to bilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy. A palatal augmentation prosthesis and a mandibular intraoral prosthesis (lingual augmentation prosthesis) were provided for this patient to address his functional dysphagia problems. These problems included insufficient oral to pharynx bolus transportation and displacement of the tongue to the right posterior. The 2 prostheses improved these 2 problems and also the head extension posture during swallowing. After insertion of the 2 prostheses, the patient could t

The hand is an integral part of our body. Any deviation in hand anatomy not only affects the day-to-day function but it even results in unesthetic appearance. Rehabilitation of these deformities is done either by microsurgery or with the help of silicone prosthesis. Nonsurgical treatment was carried out, where rehabilitation of the first digit was done with customized silicone prosthesis. Replacement of these deformities with silicone prosthesis is usually done by prosthetist. However, we being an oral and maxillofacial prosthodontist, replacement of these missing complete or partial fingers,

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Complete arch implant-supported zirconia prostheses appear to have less plaque accumulation than titanium prostheses, but a comparison of the materials and the possible influence on the adjacent soft tissue is lacking.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to compare the plaque accumulation and soft-tissue inflammation of complete arch implant-supported fixed maxillary prostheses fabricated with either a titanium framework or monolithic zirconia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty participants with a complete arch implant-supported fixed maxillary prosthesis were en

Although maxillofacial trauma is relatively common, it still presents a challenging management. Its management includes treatment of facial bone fractures, dentoalveolar trauma and soft tissue injuries as well as associated injuries. Plastic surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons and prosthodontists have an interest in the subject of maxillofacial injuries, particularly in the area of functional as well as aesthetical stomatognathic rehabilitation. Present case was a clinical scenario with maxillofacial trauma due to entanglement in agricultural equipment leading to fracture of palatal bone and frac

This report describes an approach to the simultaneous retention of a nasal prosthesis and an intraoral prosthesis for a patient who had undergone a total rhinectomy with resection of the upper lip and premaxilla. At the time of the nasal resection, 2 dental implants were placed adjacent to the resection margins in the first premolar positions. These were used to anchor an intraoral, milled titanium bar and overdenture to replace the missing anterior teeth and provide support for the upper lip, which had been reconstructed with a vascularized radial forearm free-flap. The titanium bar also inco

A patient presented complex fractures of the face and skull with leg trauma after a traffic accident. Maxillofacial repair used sophisticated procedures: bone grafts, muscle flaps and multiple osteotomies. After reconstructing the mid face and the mandibular repair, bone implants were used to stabilize the maxillary prosthesis. The psychological and functions problems raised in this case are discussed considering the occupational and social outcome.

AIM: To retrospectively evaluate the 1-year outcome of implant therapy involving various types of localised lateral alveolar ridge and/or sinus floor augmentation procedures performed before implant placement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-seven patients were consecutively treated with oral implants on average 6.5 months after bone grafting. A total of 82 regions were augmented and 151 implants were inserted. All regions were augmented with autogenous bone harvested intraorally. Block grafts (13 regions, 16%), particulate grafts (25 regions, 30%), and a combination of block and particulate gra

Patient. A 68-year-old man was operated on for squamous cell carcinoma (T3N3M0) of the maxilla creating the hemimaxillary surgical defect on right side. The remaining arch was completely edentulous. There was remarkable limitation in the oral opening with reduced perimeter of the oral cavity due to radiation and surgical scar contracture. This article describes prosthetic rehabilitation by modifying the design of the obturator and achieving the retention with dental implant. Discussion. Severe limitation in the oral opening may occur in clinical situations following the postsurgical management

Panfacial fractures involve trauma to the lower, middle, and upper facial bones and often require a team approach for management. Early and complete restoration of preinjury facial contours and function should be the goal of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon and the prosthodontist. When the intraoral landmarks are lost, overall facial anatomic landmarks can be used to restore the oral cavity. A patient with complex clinical panfacial fractures, including a vertically and horizontally malpositioned native alveolar bone and severe facial asymmetry, is presented. A functional and esthetic rehabi
