Medical illustrations in radiologic reports for endometriosis: improving communication with surgeons and patients.

Endometriosis is a complex, multicompartmental disease in which accurately conveying the extent of involvement to the surgical team is essential for preoperative planning and patient counseling. In this context, medical illustrations have gained increasing popularity as a valuable complement to traditional radiology reports. These drawings provide a visual summary of imaging findings, which are often lengthy and challenging to interpret in written form alone. By translating complex imaging data into accessible visual representations, illustrations can enhance communication between radiologists

Rifampicin induced purpura of left lower limb: Illustrative medical image.

Rifampicin-induced purpura is a rare hypersensitivity reaction encountered during anti tubercular therapy (ATT). We report a 43-year-old male with cervical tubercular lymphadenitis who developed purpuric lesions with distinctive orange-colored serous discharge over the left lower limb after initiation of ATT. Investigations excluded thrombocytopenia and systemic vasculitis. A temporal relationship between drug intake and symptom onset confirmed rifampicin as the causative agent. Prompt withdrawal of rifampicin and initiation of systemic corticosteroids led to complete resolution of the lesions

Using AI Text-to-Image Generation to Create Novel Illustrations for Medical Education: Current Limitations as Illustrated by Hypothyroidism and Horner Syndrome.

Our research letter investigates the potential, as well as the current limitations, of widely available text-to-image tools in generating images for medical education. We focused on illustrations of important physical signs in the face (for which confidentiality issues in conventional patient photograph use may be a particular concern) that medics should know about, and we used facial images of hypothyroidism and Horner syndrome as examples.

Abortion care in the time of COVID-19: an illustration of how to adapt medical care during a pandemic.

Shortly after the first lockdown was announced in March 2020, a comprehensive guideline was released by the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecologists documenting the changes that were acceptable to enable this essential service to continue to provide care to women. Abortion care providers had to act quickly to adapt their services; increasing the use of telemedicine and reducing the number of visits to hospitals and clinics in order to reduce risk to women requesting termination of pregnancy and making safe abortion accessible. Important changes to legislation were paramount in making thi

Improving early diagnosis of rare diseases using Natural Language Processing in unstructured medical records: an illustration from Dravet syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The growing use of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) is promoting the application of data mining in health-care. A promising use of big data in this field is to develop models to support early diagnosis and to establish natural history. Dravet Syndrome (DS) is a rare developmental and epileptic encephalopathy that commonly initiates in the first year of life with febrile seizures (FS). Age at diagnosis is often delayed after 2 years, as it is difficult to differentiate DS at onset from FS. We aimed to explore if some clinical terms (concepts) are significantly more used in the elect

The effect of different styles of medical illustration on information comprehension, the perception of educational material and illness beliefs.

OBJECTIVE: To explore how the addition of a medical illustration and its style affected information comprehension, perception of educational material and illness beliefs. METHODS: 204 people recruited in a supermarket were randomised to read one of the four leaflets about gout and fill out a questionnaire. Three leaflets had a picture showing gout in the form of a cartoon, an anatomical drawing or a computed tomography scan (CT). The control leaflet did not contain images. RESULTS: Seeing an illustrated leaflet helped correctly identify treatment for gout X2(1, N = 204) = 5.51, p=0.019. Out

Virtues and Narratives in Medicine: An Analysis and Collection of Virtue-Illustrating Stories in Medical Journals.

This paper draws from a framework of virtue ethics and narrative medicine to present a content analysis and teaching resource of virtue-illustrating stories found in medical journals. As acquired dispositions, virtues are cultivated not merely by listening to lectures but through reflection, experience, role-modeling, practice, and internalization. One way to encourage such cultivation is to use narratives to illustrate moral virtues in action. With this in mind, we identified a literature-based taxonomy of 12 core virtues in medicine, selected a sample of 180 narratives published in medical j

Adolph Seeligmüller (1837-1912) and the first graphic illustration of the "toe phenomenon" (later called "Babiński sign") in the medical literature.

The "toe phenomenon" refers to the extension (dorsiflexion) of the great toe, which occurs instead of the normal flexion following stimulation of the foot sole. Its clinical significance was not fully appreciated until Joseph Jules François Félix Babiński (1857-1932) described it in 1896. In 1881, Ernst Strümpell (1853-1925) had described a continuous (tonic) extension of the big toe, a finding that years later the French neurologist Jean-Athanase Sicard (1872-1929) recognized as an equivalent of the "toe phenomenon", also indicating pyramidal tract dysfunction. Previously, this phenomenon had

Vesalius on the anatomy and function of the recurrent laryngeal nerves: medical illustration and reintroduction of a physiological demonstration from Galen.

The purpose of this article is to review the anatomical illustrations and physiological demonstrations of sixteenth-century Flemish-born anatomist and physician Andreas Vesalius concerning the recurrent laryngeal nerves. Although Vesalius was primarily an anatomist, he also used vivisection as a pedagogical device to help his students understand the function of structures within the fabric of the body that they had previously studied in anatomical detail. Vesalius's masterwork, De humani corporis fabrica or simply the Fabrica (1543, 1555), was ostensibly an anatomy text, but Vesalius included

Gamma Knife radiosurgery for cluster-tic syndrome unresponsive to medical treatment: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Cluster-tic syndrome is a disorder characterized by the coexistence of symptoms related to both cluster headache and trigeminal neuralgia. Etiopathogenesis is not yet well defined. Medical treatment, including drugs for both cluster headache and trigeminal neuralgia, is the first therapeutic choice, whereas more invasive treatments are indicated in the case of pharmacological therapy failure or in the presence of drug side effects. To date, no randomized and/or large cohort trials describing Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) for cluster-tic syndrome are available, probably due to the

Calcified Prolactinoma of the Pituitary Gland: Illustrative Case Reports Highlighting Medical versus Surgical Intervention.

The presence of calcification is uncommon in pituitary adenomas, and often lends support to other diagnoses including craniopharyngioma. The majority of calcified pituitary adenomas are prolactin-secreting tumors. We report two patients with calcified macroprolactinomas, one that was treated medically with a biochemical response and partial tumor response, and one that was treated successfully via an endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach. Suspected calcified prolactinomas can be initially managed medically as per standard treatment for typical prolactinomas; however, the presence of di

Fiducial-marked laminectomy window for intrathecal medication administration after spinal fusion: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an inherited disease that leads to weakness, loss of ambulation, and progressive scoliosis in many patients, frequently requiring early spinal fusion. Nusinersen is a disease-modifying agent that improves symptoms and slows the progression of SMA but requires serial lumbar punctures for intrathecal drug delivery. Spinal fusion for scoliosis has historically been a contraindication for nusinersen therapy, as the fused spinal laminae block access to the thecal sac. OBSERVATIONS: Here, the authors report a case wherein a patient with SMA and prior sco
